    How do you do it?

    Report bad ads?

    Hi everyone

I was thinking about Ramadan today and I wondered how you guys cope with being hungry during your fasting.

If I miss a meal, I find myself getting irritable and grumpy very quickly and sometimes even make quite irrational decisions.

I really admire anyone who can go all day without eating until evening, it's quite an amazing achievement for so many days....

I am curious to know, how do you get through this? Do you have your own psychologial techniques? Do you find yourself becoming irritable/emotional etc or does determination override this?

    Thank youuuuu! :thankyou:

Re: How do you do it?

    Greetings Karina,

fasting in Ramadan is the easiest if you are generally not a heavy eater. if you are a greedy guts (:P), fasting may prove to be difficult.

Fasting is not merely about not eating and drinking, its also about self restraint from bad deeds and it is a time of reflection of ways to improve your spirituality/person etc...so in that aspect the not eating and drinking part, practically becomes irrelevant as we are not aiming to combat hunger and thirst, but simply trying to combat our bad habits.

people who really make the effort to improve spiritually and really use these limited days as a means to become closer to god, i doubt even realize they are hungry...

i think also that the key is remebering the reward from God for the one that fasts...

practically speaking i think its about Patience and strength. having a balance of good eating and knowing what to consume and not to consume your energy on, also helps.

please make dua that Allah grants me a good end (to my life). please make dua that Allah guides me.

Re: How do you do it?

Its a very wonderful thing to fast, like none other really, especially in Ramadan.
Allah the Most High said, 'Every action of the son of Adam is given manifold reward, each good deed receiving then times its like, up to seven hundred times. Except for fasting, for it is for Me and I will give recompense for it, he leaves off his desires and his food for Me.' for the fasting person there are two times of joy; a time when he breaks his fast and a time of joy when he meets his Lord, and the smell coming from the mouth of the fasting person is better with Allah than the smell of musk."

So what can be better than to feel hungry and thirsty for the one I love the most? Its indeed such a great gift and am happy so much that this month is here and wish it just stays forever.

How I spend the time of fast? Trying to do things to get me more hungry and thirsty ^
Such as reading and learning Quran and praying.
I hope I answered your question

    You are welcome

Re: How do you do it?

    Peace Karina,

At other times, it's hard to let go of food, but when fasting it's easier and you don't think about eating praise be to Allah.

If you'd like to read about the benefits of fasting, here's a good article.

The fast provides us with many benefits and is full of wisdom. It purifies and strengthens our hearts. It rids us of our baser tendencies like exuberance, arrogance, and stinginess. It reinforces our good traits like fortitude, clemency, and generosity. It supports us in our inner struggle to please Allah and attain nearness to Him.

Fasting teaches us about ourselves and our needs. It shows us how weak we are and how truly dependent we are upon our Lord. It shows us how much Allah has blessed us. We are reminded of our brethren those who are less fortunate and are inspired to treat them well. We are compelled to thank Allah and to use the blessings He has provided us in obedience to Him.

Allah draws attention to these many benefits when he says: “O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it has been prescribed for those who were before you that you may learn self-restraint.” [Sûrah al-Baqarah: 183]

In this verse, Allah makes it clear that he prescribed fasting in order to purify us. Fasting is a means for us to learn self-restraint and cultivate our piety. Piety is to observe the commandments and prohibitions of Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) sincerely out of our love and reverence for Allah, and to avoid His punishment and anger.

Fasting is a great act of piety in itself and a great means of increasing our piety in all aspects of our religious and worldly lives.

When the angel Gabriel asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about Islam, he replied: “Islam is to bear witness that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish prayer, to pay charity, to fast the month of Ramadan, and to perform pilgrimage to the House if you are able to make the journey.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhî]

Gabriel then said: “You have spoken the truth.” Then he said: “Tell me about faith.”

Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) replied: “It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His Messengers, the Last Day, and divine decree, both the good and bad of it.”

He said: “You have spoken the truth. Tell me about excellence in faith.”

Allah’s Messenger replied: “It is to worship Allah as though you see Him, and though you do not see Him, you know that He sees you.”

He said: “You have spoken the truth. [Sahîh Muslim]

Once Mu`âdh b. Jabal said to the Prophet (peace be upon him): “Tell me about some deed that will admit me into Paradise and distance me from the Hellfire.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: “You have asked about something great, yet it is very simple for one for whom Allah makes it easy. Worship Allah and do not associate anything with him in worship. Establish prater, pay Zakâh, fast the month of Ramadan, and undertake the pilgrimage to the House if you are able to do so.” Then the Prophet (peace be upon him added: “Should I not inform you about the gates of goodness? Fasting is Paradise. Charity extinguishes sins like water extinguishes fire.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhî]

Fasting is a most virtuous act with a reward commensurate with its greatness. This is especially true in Ramadan, since Allah has made fasting therein an obligation upon the believers and a means of their attaining salvation.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Every deed of the human being is for himself and its reward is multiplied for him from ten to seven hundred times. Allah says: ‘Except for fasting, for truly it is for Me and I alone will reward it, for verily he abandoned his desires, his food, and his drink for my sake.’ The one who fasts experiences two joys, one upon breaking his fast and one when he meets his Lord. Surely the breath of the fasting person is sweeter to Allah than the fragrance of musk.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim]

We need to safeguard the blessings of our fasts from our sins and our shortcomings. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever does not leave off false speech and false conduct, Allah has no need of his leaving off food and drink.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî]

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When any one of you is observing the fast for the day, he should neither indulge in obscene language nor raise his voice. If someone insults him or quarrels with him, he should say: ‘I am fasting’.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim]

    Totally agree with this.

Alhamdulillah when I am doing monday-thursday sunnah fastings (in any other months but Ramadan), I don't feel hungry or thirsty, but as soon as I don't fast the next day, I feel that I MUST eat breakfast or I'll die from hunger LOL.

Remember, for muslims fasting is not only eating, but also NOT drinking, smoking (well, this is haraam anyway), sexual pleasures, getting angry, etc.
Fasting is made easier as long as we remember we do it for Allah SWT.

Re: How do you do it?

I have found that drinking water makes you hungrier. When we fast we eat absolutely nothing. But if you try on a normal day to eat nothing but drink only water, you might find it very very difficult because it makes you feel hungry.

    Aslaamu`Alaaykum
Agreed, its not hard but on the first day some may find it difficult and eventually you become used to it.

To be honest its quite a blessing to be able to fast, it humbles one deep inside, and it reminds us of those people who rarely get much to eat and fill up their stomachs. We get to feel the similar feeling as our brothers and sisters who dont have as much food as ourselves, the pain they go through. We get a chance to become thankful to Allaah our creator, for we can finally eat to fill up our stomachs (but not overload) at the end of the day, but there are those who dont get that chance. We give Charity to the needy. It gives us the chance to become closer to our Lord who created us by thanking daily in our prayers and Duas.

As i remember from somewhere that Fasting itself benefits us not only spiritualy but good for our body.

Fasting is more spiritual than physical process. but since you are asking about coping with being hungry for hours, I think our stomachs need some break from time to another. Our health gets better during Ramadan unlike other months. I heard also that even dentists say that people in Ramadan suffer from their teeth less than other months because they don't eat much....don't chew much......and so don't get their teeth worked much.

Well worded lool, i like the demonstration with pic as well.

Answering the OP, like someone else said, it is a blessing from Allah that we control ourselves and not get hungry or thirsty. Mentally, my brain knows that im not going to eat anything, so hunger usually goes away. I get thirsty sometimes because of the 100 degree weather, but alhamdulillah I try my best not to think about it.

Re: How do you do it?

Just to say that I don't genuinely think about food, of course Allah would not ask a person to sit there and go without food and just be desperate to eat, then there is no point. Of course there are people who can get in the habit of thinking in the way of enjoying themselves in this world, but I genuinely enjoy fasting and praying, and it does not matter what I haven't been able to do in the Day in other issues as long as I have prayed and pray the missed prayers during the day, I am happy. As that is all I need to do per day at least, remember and worship Allah and remember the Last Day.

I am in my 6th fast and I am happy.

We are willing to eat and do things that make us happy we should also be happy with being Muslims without being able to eat too. I don't force myself not to eat, but happy not to eat.

Even in the Quran there is a story of people praying to Allah when they are on a ship whilst they are in a storm, but when they are brought safely to land they are neglectful of remembering Allah. So they are only happy with Allah when he provides them with something.

How many people make excuses in this world if I did not have the support I need I turn to crime, (which of course are lies), if their government etc does not give them what they want they complain, but they don't talk more of when the goverment does well, but remember their faults more. So people have to show that they are good, Islam is not like a football team when they are more successful.

That is why the Jews were criticised at the time of Prophet Moses peace be upon him for even complaining about not have more types of food, saying that they are not willing to fight and let the Prophet Moses peace be upon him fight for them (which is why people can say Islam is successful as Muslims supported Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and did not treat him as if he is going to make their life better in this world). If we wanted riches, then simply people would not join the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him he lived simply. So we did not become Muslims to enjoy and be happy here but in the next world. We do not differienate between the Prophets, we talk more about Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him as we had the benefit of his teachings.

Even it has been mentioned that the Muslims is like a Date Palm Tree, and it does not need much to survive. It still can stand and be strong.

It is not hard to think that way as this world is limited and the amounts of evil, I would not want to live here for a long time. Thank Allah that in Paradise, it is clean wherever you may go, and you are genuinely accepted and cared for, not like the treatment that peopl like to get in the West were they go on holiday and want to be treated well, well people don't actually care about them, and at least you don't have to pay people in Paradise to be kind to you.

They are happy to mention Allah more if something goes wrong in their lives and actually say why would he allow this to happen, but they don't rememeber him when they are busy eating the variety of citrus fruits etc. So we do it with what we believe, not what our stomachs would prefer, but stomach does not feel hungry when you are remembering Allah and the Last Day.
