    Tips for first time Ramadhan?

    Report bad ads?

I am going to try Ramadhan for the first time..

Does anyone have any tips or advice?

For example is there good food for breakfast anyone can recomend that might help to keep me going?
Do people sleep all day or is that cheating?
Is drinking allowed? caffe for example or just water? I am a terrible caffine addict and driving without is quite dangerous in my experience, can i take caffine pills?
And smoking, i am an addict and want to cut down/quit, is one or two allowed during the day? If not are nicotiene patches ok?

It seems a daunting task the closer it gets..Any advice much appreciated.

Hi. Good for you..You should have a strong breakfast in suhur. Eggs and honey are my recommendation for you. And as it is summer times, I dont know where you live but it can be quite hot nowadays. You should drink enough water. If you are not going to sleep after suhur you should drink the coffe as much as you can because nothing from what you mentioned above is allowed during fasting. Principally, anything which is going to mix in your blood is not allowed. Nicotine mixes in the blood too so it is in the list aswell.

Thank for that, It happens i keep chickens and bees so that wont be a problem, makes sense too proteine and energy to get me through the day..I think we are down to our last jar of honey , i will ration it..

My addictions to caffiene and nicotiene will be the real test..
A huge blessing and reward too if it might help me quit or at least keep my consumption under control or at least break my morning routine of consuming poisons for beakfast

Living in Ireland so heat not a problem but the days are long in May and June, was just looking at a time table, sunrise is just before 5am and Isha is just before midnight at the end of Ramadhan..I am assuming its after Isha is when one can eat?

Are you a revert? It may be challenging to jump directly into a full month of fasting without ever having tried days of fasting before. Always take it gradually and build up from there perhaps speak with your doctor for medical and nutritional advice but generally eating fresh wholesome fruits and vegetables, cutting down on artificial sugary and fastfood will tend to be really helpful and healthy for your body to cope naturally, sometimes people do take extra supplements. Ramadan will commence when the new moon has been sighted in your area/country.

All the best, May Allah accept your fasting and duas. Ameen.

    - - - Updated - - -

Also, don't sleep all day! The aim is to continue your normal obligations whilst doing the extra acts of ibaadah.

I suppose this Ramadhan is the test, I dont know yet if i am able to revert..
I do believe in the one God and that Mohamed (pbuh) is His messenger but not so sure i have the devotion to actually practice all the pillars of Islam which i feel i need to, before i can say my religion is Islam..Inshalla, i will find out soon enough..

May Allahas blessings be with you this Ramahdan and beyond..

    bro

Other main spiritual tips are keep patience (this month is also called as a month of patience=sabur) and confidence on Allah. I ve tested so many times when i can't be away from food and drinks especially drinks more than 3-4 hours Allah makes it easy am not hungry even after 8-9 hours , EVEN ON A VERY HOT DAY.

Alhamdulillah, Allah is enough for his slaves.

Thanks, yeah you need to follow the mosque in your local community

How was it so far? Actually, you need to really avoid caffiene and instead drink lots of water before and after the fasting. I usually have my water during the taraweeh breaks in between those 4 rakaats when we making the supplication and before commencing the fast. Also, you can aim having rest periods if self-employed as in a very short nap after dhur prayer but if a normal job then sometime after work (mines is usually 30 mins to 1 hr). This individualized rest period will help in the endurance to regain strength and performing normal duties and do different forms of Ibaadah like reciting the Quran. If you are unable to do so, then listening from an App like this one: MP3 Quran .

Also, you should cut down the intake of water some time before sleep as you don't want to be disturbed during the night rest.

What happens to your body when you fast

The following dua (prayers) are recited at the beginning and end of the fast to indicate and affirm the intention of the fast.

A person's intention when fasting, is to bring him/herself closer to God.
The purpose of making an intention before every deed is to remind our inner self and confirm with our verbal intention that we seek the pleasure of God in our all actions.

Dua (Prayer) at the Beginning of the Fast 1
    وَبِصَوْمِ غَدٍ نَّوَيْتُ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ
Wa bisawmi ghadinn nawaiytu min shahri ramadan
I intend to keep the fast for tomorrow in the month of Ramadan
Or you can also recite the following:
Dua (Prayer) at the Beginning of the Fast 2
Nawaitu sauma ghadin anadai fardu syahri ramadhana hadzihissanati lillahitaala
I intend to do obligatory fast tomorrow in the month of Ramadan this year because of Allah

Dua (Prayer) at the End of the Fast
    اللَّهُمَّ اِنِّى لَكَ صُمْتُ وَبِكَ امنْتُ وَعَليْكَ تَوَكّلتُ وَ عَلى رِزْقِكَ اَفْطَرْتُ
Allahumma inni laka sumtu wa bika aamantu wa alayka tawakkaltu wa ala rizq-ika-aftartu
O Allah! I fasted for You and I believe in You and I put my trust in You and I break my fast with Your sustenance

    Hadith of Intention
Umar Ibn Al-Khattab relates that he heard the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه و سلم say : “Actions are but by intention and every man shall have but that which he intended. Thus he whose migration was for Allah and His messenger, his migration was for Allah and His messenger, and he whose migration was to achieve some worldly benefit or to take some woman in marriage, his migration was for that for which he migrated.” ~ Related by Bukhari and Muslim
This is an extremely comprehensive and rich Hadith of the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم that reflects the core of the Islamic Faith.
Imam Bukhari selected the first hadith, ‘Innamal a’malu binniyat’ of Sahih Bukhari as an introduction to the whole collection to show the sincerity of purpose of the author. It reminds the reader that good and noble deeds inculcated by the Hadith found therein will only bear fruit if there is sincerity attached to their intentions and would be meaningless if the motive is not sincere.

Do people sleep all day or is that cheating?
ha ha ha. fasting isn't of that much hardship.when I was a child, we used to feel proud for going through hardships as a sayim among our friends (I miss those days). but, yes, you can try to have a nap at noon.
caffe for example or just water? I am a terrible caffine addict and driving without is quite dangerous in my experience, can i take caffine pills?
are you kidding? you must not drink or eat anything after sahri.you should take your caffine during sahri and iftar, but not during day time.
And smoking, i am an addict and want to cut down/quit, is one or two allowed during the day? If not are nicotiene patches ok
wait a minute, is caffine any kind of drug? I guess, if you eat haram, your prayers wouldn't be accepted for next 40 days.ruling on nicotine patch https://islamqa.info/en/103523
    nicotine patch during fasting https://islamqa.org/hanafi/daruliftaa-birmingham/19994
bro, you should give up drug as soon as possible. try to find a group who help people to avoid drug, and seek help from pious brothers. read books on - how to give up addiction

The fasting went great, I broke my habbit of Caffe ciggarett, woke early said a prayer ate well had a caffe and ciggarette , prayed on time then started fasting..Was going well till i had a stupid dissagreement with my partner which flared up, i lost my temper I know this isnt good at any time especially not during Rmamdhan

All about intention, my intention was to be a better parent and partner, be more patient, forgiving and kind, not let the kids stress me out and not loose my temper Also to be truthfull and aware of Truth and conscious of God, prehaps i was too Truthfull and/or realised a Truth i wouldnt accept before and it was Allahas way of telling me something i was refusing to accept which i reacted badly to, or simply my addictions getting the better of me, i am not sure..

I managed to go all day though with nothing but water, i was so upset i couldnt eat anyway, couldnt sleep much and over slept this morning, i broke my habbit of coffe, ciggarett for breakfast and smoked less today but i think i need to resolve some issues first before i try fasting some more..

Thanks for your post it was helpfull..

And thanks too @Mahir Adnan you are right i think giving up addictions are a must, Coffe need not be an addiction if its used rather than abused, it is a drug that can be used in a controled way without harm but nicotiene must be one of the most addictive drugs there is, that addiction i decided last night has to go...

If you believe in One God and that Muhammad (saw) is the last messenger, then you should go take your shahada right away. Practicing the pillars comes in stages and not meant for you to do them all perfectly all at once. You don't need to wait to be perfect to begin practicing and making an effort. Its actually the other way around. By striving to do what is asked of you, it helps you perfect your character

Don't make the mistake of setting super high expectations for yourself from the start. Slow and steady wins the race.

As far as fasting is concerned, you may want to try alternate days for now, but when you do fast, do it fully so you can reap the benefits. You will feel SO GOOD when you get to the end of the day and it will make you stronger each time you achieve a full day insha'Allah

Re: Tips for first time Ramadhan?

By Moulana Fadlur Rahman Sahib Sheikhul Hadith, Madrasah Arabia Islamia, Azaadville

Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam said: "On the first night of Ramadân, the Shayateen (devils) and the rebellious jinnat are imprisoned. All the doors of Jahannam (hell) are closed and all the doors of Jannah are opened. A caller calls out, "O seeker of good, advance and O seeker of evil, refrain (from evil). Many people are emancipated from Jahannam by Allah Ta'ala and this takes place every night." (Tirmizi, Ibn Majah)

    Sehri

It is sunnah to partake of Sehri. Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam said: "Eat sehri, as in it lies great blessings." (Sahih Bukhari)

The difference in our fasting and that of the Ahlul Kitab (Jews and Christians) lies in the partaking of food at the time of sehri.(Sahih Muslim)

This sunnah may also be achieved by merely eating one or two morsels or having something to drink. The sunnah time for sehri is the last portion of the night, whereas to hasten with iftâr is sunnah. When a person clearly comes to know of the setting of the sun, he should commence with his iftâr. He should not delay. It is preferable to break one's fast with dates, otherwise with water as this is also a cleanser. The dua at the time of iftâr is:

"O Allah, for You have I fasted and upon Your sustenance I break my fast." (Sunan Abi Dawood)

To make an intention is a pre-requisite for fasting. To make this intention from the night is preferable. However, the fast of Ramadân will be valid even if a person made his intention before the passing of half the day.

    Abstaining from Sin

Whilst fasting, special importance should be given to abstain from sin. It is stated in a hadith that "the person who does not abstain from evil acts and speaking lies, Allah is not in need of his fast. (Sahih Bukhari)

Backbiting, slandering, arguments, not guarding one's eyes from looking at evil, bad thoughts, shaving or trimming of the beard and allowing one's trouser or garments to cover the ankles. One should abstain from all these types of sins especially in the month of Ramadân. If a person gives due importance to refrain from these sins in the month of Ramadân, then it is hoped that it will become easy for him to refrain from them throughout the year. The objective of fasting is to inculcate the quality of taqwa (piety) as Allah mentions in the Quran: "So that you attain piety." A person refrains from eating and drinking for the sake of Allah for a stipulated time, but how foolish will it not be to refrain from those things which are always harâm (forbidden).

    Tarâwîh

The tarâwîh salâh of twenty raka'ât is sunnat-e-muakkadah for both males and females. For men to perform it in the masjid with jamâ'ah is Sunnah-alal-kifâyah. This means that it is sunnah for some people to perform the salâh with jamâ'ah (congregation) in the masjid. Thus if some others perform their Esha salâh with jamâ'ah in the masjid and perform their tarâwîh salâh at home with jamâ'ah or individually, it is permissible.

    Itikâf

To remain in itikâf for the last ten days of Ramadân is Sunnah-alal-kifâyah. If even one person from the locality performs itikâf, this sunnah is fulfilled. A very easy and practical way of finding Laylatul Qadr is to sit for itikâf. If a person only performs itikâf during the nights of the last ten days, then also he will acquire this virtue. If this is also not possible, then at least the odd nights should be given importance. This is also a great fortune. A person sleeping whilst in itikâf will be regarded as if he is performing ibâdat (worship). A person may engage in permissible speech whilst in itikâf. However he should refrain from obscene and vain talk.

    Tahajjud

There is great reward for the performance of tahajjud salâh (nightly vigil). It is the practise of the pious. By virtue of it, sins are forgiven. To refrain from sins also becomes easy. The reward of Tahajjud will be achieved by performing two raka'ât also. A person should perform two to four raka'ât of tahajjud at least when waking up for sehri. The time of tahajjud and sehri remains till subah sâdiq (true-dawn)

    - - - Updated - - -

    Sadaqatul fitr

Sadaqatul fitr is wajib on every such Muslim who possesses the nisâb of zakât before the subah sâdiq (true-dawn) of the day of Eid. Whether he had this amount of money for a complete year or not. In fact, if a person possesses more than his basic household needs and its value is equal to the nisâb of zakâh, then upon him also sadaqatul fitr is wajib, while zakât is not wâjib on him. (Marâqiul falâh) A person has to give sadaqatul fitr for himself and on behalf of his immature children (those that have not yet reached the age of puberty). If the children do have the amount of money, then the father will pay it from their money. The wife and bâligh children will give sadaqatul fitr from their own wealth if they posses that amount. It is not wâjib (compulsory) on the husband and father to give on their behalf. However, if a person pays on behalf of his wife or bâligh children after informing them, then it will be regarded as fulfilled. If the wife and bâligh children do not posses that amount, then sadaqatul fitr is not wajib on them nor on their guardians. (Shâmi/Hidâyah)

    Amount of Sadaqatul fitr
In accordance to sound and authentic ahâdith, if a person gives wheat for sadaqatul fitr, then half a sâ' is sufficient. This is ascertained from both Tahawi and Tirmidi Shareef (compilations of hadith) and this is the view of the majority of the Hanafi scholars.

Half a sâ' in today's time is equivalent to a maximum of 1.7kg. Flour to the same amount is also sufficient. If one wishes to give money in place of wheat or flour, then the value of 1.7kg of wheat flour should be given. For example, if one kilogram of flour costs three rands, then the amount will be 1.7 kg x R3.00 which will total to R5.10. Similarly, if the price of flour is less, then it should be multiplied with the respective amount. The price of that flour should be ascertained which a person uses daily. If he happens to use different types or qualities of flour, then he should ascertain the price of the average quality flour.

This ruling and calculation is in conformance to the view of majority of the scholars of the Indo-Pak Subcontinent. This is also the view of, interalia, Mufti Muhammed Shafi Sâheb rahmatullah alaih - Grand Mufti of Pakistan and Moulânâ Abrarul Haq Sâheb damat barakatuhum of Hardoi.

    The Musallah (Eid Gah)

The performing of the Eid salâh in an open field on the outskirts of the town or city, is Sunnah Muakkadah (greatly stressed upon sunnah). According to the verdict of many senior Muftis, in big cities or towns, the sunnah will (Insha Allah) be fulfilled even by reading in a field or open plain within the city. However, for the benefit of the sick, weak and other "ma'zoor" persons (people with valid Shar'i reasons), arrangements can be made to perform Eid Salâh in the masjid.

Similarly, due to rain also, the Eid Salâh can be read in the masjid. However, to fulfill the Sunnah Muakkadah act of performing Eid Salâh at the Musallâ (Eid Gâh) in favourable weather, normal and healthy people should give importance to proceeding to the Musallâ (Eid Gâh). The habit of performing the Eid Salâh in the Masjid is not a good habit. Despite the great virtue of the blessed Masjid of Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam - Masjid-un-Nabawi - Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam and the Khulafa - Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali Radiallahu anhum left this masjid on the occasion of Eid and always proceeded to the Musallâ (Eid Gâh) for the Eid salâh. For more details on this subject refer to the book,
"The Sunnah of the Musallâ" by Hazrat Moulânâ Fazlur Rahman Saheb.

    Women Proceeding for Eid Salaah

For women to proceed to the Musallâ (Eid Gâh) nowadays is forbidden according to the majority of the Fuqahâ (jurists), as there is a great danger of fitnah (vice). Imam Tahâwi rahmatullah alaih states that during the time of Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam the women used to go to the Musallâ (Eid Gâh) so that the enemies could be overawed by the large numbers of the Muslims. (Ma'arifus Sunan vol. 4 pg. 445).

Re: Tips for first time Ramadhan?

    Salaam,

Just checking up on you. It's normal kids will stress you out keeping calm and collected is what you aim for but understandably a challenge. I get it. You have other Noble intentions, MashAllah. I think it helps to be silent when angry and perform Wudhu. It's very calming. Maybe just go for a walk instead of finding yourself in an argument. In that time keep praising Allah enjoy nature, the skies, birds, trees, flowers. You may even find a solution for the disagreement whilst on your stroll. Inshallah.

Life is challenging but Allah can make it easy and successful for us :-)

We just need to try our best and put Him first, it doesn't matter how many times we fail, He's always there with His mercy and forgiveness. You don't have to be perfect, just try. This is a good dua to say in finding peace with your spouse and kids:

Also, some tips on parenting skills:

    And I like this one:

Have you ever tried Chia tea, maybe it can be substituted for the coffee, it incorporates spices like cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg, which helps in being alert and aids general health. There are some recipes on-line, also try maybe a Ramadan Journal if you have time, so next Ramadan reflecting and making necessary adjustments will be easier.

Lastly, I think it's good advice the sister gave on fasting alternative days as a beginner. Take care for now......
