    Missed Ramadan fasts

    Report bad ads?

Salam everyone, this Ramadan gone I found fasting difficult. After a few days into Ramadan I fainted, this looked like a seizure but was dismissed by gps unless it was to happen again. They recommended it was maybe better not to fast. So I didn't. Now I'm trying to make them up, but after keeping a single fast, I spent that evening with the worst migraine, and the next day too. I also felt unsteady at dizzy near the end eventhough the days are so short. I'm stressing because I don't know if I can just pay to feed the poor or I have to make these fasts up. Please if someone can help me il be very greatful. Jzk

Wasalaam sister, may Allah reward your dedication and steadfastness. You mentioned seizure, is this a chronic condition (perhaps diabetic seizures?), here is a good source on chronic illness and hardship:

How is the suhoor like? Make sure to drink much more water to carry you through the day. Many experience dizziness and migraines due to inadequate water consumption. Make dua that Allah will bring ease and track the water intake!

    Re: Missed Ramadan fasts

It is not a chronic illness, however epilepsy does run in my family, which is what we thought it may be. I just find it scary, if one day I'm walking home alone and suddenly faint or something happens to me. As when these seizures happen I tend to not remember and have walked in to things and smacked my face on to hard surfaces. It's just a worry for me, because there are many times where I'm alone during the day, and I worry it may happen when I'm on a road with traffic or if I'm near the stairs. Having said that, I don't know if fasting was even a factor towards it, the doctor said he believes it was and said it was better if I didn't fast last year, but I don't know, I just feel he may have been unsure and said it to be on the safe side. Thanks for your help.

I think one thing is the actual hardship of an illness, but don't allow fear of the future deter you.
My mother in-law was planning to stay home one day alone, but decided to go to work that day and she fainted in the office where people were with her - by the mercy of Allah.
Also have a dear friend of mine who is approaching 70 and suffers from epilepsy (always blacks out), cancer, and heart disease - he always stresses the importance of dua.

But definitely consult with your local scholar in person!

    Asalaamulaykum

I do admire your approach in this matter as i know of many people who will just take one arbitrary instance of a possible diagnoses and then self apply it for the rest of their lives and not fast. Its highly commendable of you that you are trying negate all possibilities before nullifying fasting. May Allah SWT grant you Jannah on just that intent and thought alone.

Normally in western countries when a GP tells someone that they should not fast from a medical perspective - the GPS normally take the length of the fast into consideration together with the medical diagnoses. The problem here is the medical perspective takes the length of fasting into consideration meanwhile in Fiqh, it doesnt really consider the length (Unless you in a extreme latitude. The extreme latitude here is defined by ulema and you will you have find out from your local ulema if your country falls in that - i know that the UK doesnt fall in this category).

The logical way to medically validate a person not fasting is that the person will have to have the issue constantly irrelevant of the time of the year. Example a person who has sever Asthma will use an inhaling pump throughout the year. Failure of using the pump will consequently lead to respiratory failure and eventually death within minutes in many cases. That will be a medical valid case.

You are on the right track by experimenting as such, with fasting during shorter days to ascertain the consistency of the seizures. This needs to be reported back to your GP so that solid deduction can be made that fasting would be detrimental to you.

    * * * It is very important that you DONT use one instance of a GP diagnoses not to fast, then, during your experimentation phase of fasting you end of Self diagnosing because then you using medical scholarship for one diagnoses but then using your own (non medical scholarship) for the remainder. This will show no consistency in your evaluation. So please report back to the GP the experiences of shorter fasting.

I do employ you to also please take the advice of all the other brothers and sisters concerning this topic as many would guide you onto other possibilities before you reach the possible conclusion of not fasting.
