[Masjid An Nur, Pekanbaru, Riau

Masjid An Nur was opening at 27 Rajab 1388 H or coincide with the date of October 19, 1968. Inaugurated by Arifin Ahmad, Governor of Riau at the time and in 2000 during period of governor Djasit Saleh, masjid An Nur was renovated on a large scale.

From the renovation in year 2000 the mosque's land area tripled from the previous 4-hectare only to be 12.6 hectare.

In the history, the masjid An-Nur had been a campus of the Faculty of Islamic Theology State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Sultan Sharif Kasim Pekabaru at the beginning of its establishment until 1973. IAIN Kasim Sultan Sharif has now become the State Islamic University of Sultan Sharif Kasim (UIN Suska) Pekanbaru

Masdjid An-Nur of Riau in Pekanbaru is called the Taj Mahal of Riau province. When we observe the mosque's architectural, An-Nur does have some similarities with the Taj Mahal. Mosque architecture was designed by Ir. Roseno with a size of 50 X 50 m, located in a yard which covers 400 X 200 m. The capacity of the mosque can accommodate about 4,500 worshipers. The mosque consists of three levels. The upper level is used for prayer, and a lower level for office and meeting space.

This mosque has three steps, 1 piece of stairs at the front and 2 on the side of the stairs. In the upper part consists of 13 pieces of the door and the bottom consists of 4 pieces of the door and have large rooms and a hall. While calligraphy contained in the room mosque is written by a calligrapher named Azhari Nur from Jakarta, written in 1970.

Downstairs is the secretariat of mosque officials, management, mosque's youth, and classroom space where the implementation of Islamic education. Masjid An-Nur of Riau also equipped with escalators connecting between floors one and two. In the courtyard of the Great Mosque of An-Nur Riau is a broad fieldMasjid An Nur also equipped with various facilities like education from playgroup, kindergarten, elementary, junior high and high school, a comprehensive library and facilities such as halls and meeting rooms, classrooms and office space.

Al Markaz Al Islami Makassar is located on the former land of Hasanuddin University campus, with a land area of 10 acres. Al Markaz Al Iskami Makassar, is the grandest mosques in South Sulawesi, which construction is based on the idea of the former Minister of Defense / Armed Forces Commander General (Ret.) M. Jusuf, in early 1989 while in a haj pilgrimage, popped the idea to make a monumental mosque in Ujungpandang (Makassar) to various figures, including Munawir Sjadzali, MA (then Minister of Religious Affairs), Prof. Dr. Sujudi (when it was still the Rector of UI), and famous businessman M.Jusuf Kalla.

Masjid al-Nabawi in Medina has beautiful tremendous attraction for M. Jusuf, until March 3, 1994, during the month of Ramadan 1414 H, the funds collected from businessmen, not only Muslims, but also non-Muslim businessmen like Prayogo Pangestu, and Harry Darmawan.

Al Markaz Al Islami designed by Ir. Noe'man Achmad, an architect of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) who specializes in the field of mosque design, the mosque has a mix of beauty of Masjid al-Nabawi and characteristic of Masjid Katangka in Gowa, which is the oldest mosque built in 1687 by Sultan Hasanuddin, the first king of Gowa who spread Islam in Sulawesi.

Al Markaz Al Islami is now the largest development center of Islam in Southeast Asia, where the ground floor is used for offices and a discussion room, second floor prayer hall with a capacity for 10,000 worshipers, while the higher floors are made with a form letter U is used for women's prayer room.

Al Markaz Al Islami has five towers, one of which the highest height reached 87 meters, the entire wall of the mosque decorated with ornaments and sculpture beautiful calligraphy.

Was opening in 1978, Masjid Istiqlal is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia that can accommodate until 200,000 worshipers although its ideal capacity is 120,000. The interesting thing of Masjid Istiqlal is, this mosque designed by Frederich Silaban, a Christian who won architecture contest for Masjid Istiqlal.

Masjid Raya Baiturrahman, Banda Aceh

The largest mosque in Aceh that become the landmark of Banda Aceh.



Masjid Raya (grand mosque) Baiturrahman was built by the Dutch to placate the people of Aceh after the Dutch colonial forces burned old Baiturrhaman mosque in April 1873, the same day when major general Koehler was killed by an Aceh sniper.

After consultation with local ulema in Aceh, the Dutch began to rebuild the Baiturrahman mosque in October 1879 and was completed December 1881. Designed by De Bruijn, a captain in the Dutch army. There was only one dome at that time. In 1935, the Dutch colonial added two domes, so Baiturrahman had three domes.

After independence, the government of Indonesia to build two domes and two towers, were completed in 1967, so Baiturrahman had five domes. And finally in 1991 govt built two more domes, and now Baiturrahman has seven domes.

In general, the architecture of Baiturrahman is an eclectic patterned, which is a design resulting from the combination of various elements and the best models from various countries so that the mosque be so majestic and beautiful. To add to the splendor and beauty, the mosque is positioned in the middle of the field wide open and that all parts of the mosque can be seen clearly from a distance.

The first part of the mosque was the one position attached to the main unit. After the gate, there is a rectangular portico. The front, left, and right porch surrounded by a staircase that form the letter U. At the front end, there are three openings (windows without doors) which was formed by four slender cylindrical pole Moorish architectural models that are common in mosques North Africa and Spain. And, between the poles connected to one another with a broken gate model of Persia.

Since there are four pillars, that means there are three gates. At the top and sides of the gate, there are ornate arch-bend relief, such as Arabesque patterns (motive of leaves, branches, and trees). At the third gate, there is a kind of ladder-shaped tympanum like the cross section of a ladder. The style is typical of the classical model of the Netherlands.

At each stage, decorated with miniature a substation or a cupola adorned onion domes on the top. The style shows the influence of India. So, from the outside of course, is so obvious eclectic feel of this mosque. Left and right side of the porch has two poles are connected by a door, decorations similar to the front porch.

After passing through the hall, then go to the main mosque used for prayer. However, before going into the main room, there are more gates and poles are the same as the front. Gate without doors, like most ancient mosques in India.

The middle of a square prayer hall are the main dome topped by a beautiful and majestic character of onions. Cunduk decorated bud, like the ancient mosques in India. On each side, there is a window that is used as air circulation.

At the bottom, there is "tritisan" in octagon shape. On the left and right of the main prayer hall, there is a twin wing unit so that the building is to be symmetrical. Layered pyramid-shaped roof of the mosque two. In the window that contained in this mosque, it looked very much Moorish influence, especially from the intricate patterned decoration.

Not only that, the existence of a pool of water in front of more and add a beautiful for Masjid Baiturrahman. Therefore, the position at the middle of the road between the left and right with an area of about five to seven meters it helped add to the beauty and splendor of the mosque of residents of Banda Aceh.

Located in center of Semarang city, the capital of Central Java province. first built in 1760 but later burned down due to a lightning strike in 1885. Rebuilt in 1889.

Masjid Agung Jawa Tengah

Masjid Agung Jawa Tengah/MJAT (Grand Mosque of Central Java) was built on the land owned by Masjid kauman Semarang (see previous post) which ever 'lost' due to mistake in swap between Masjid Kauman and a private company. Later after this land back to Masjid Kauman, Central Java provincial govt decided to build a new mosque that would become the provincial mosque of Central Java province.

Construction process started in 6 Sept 2002, attended by ambasadors of Saudi Arabia, UEA, Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt, Palestine, and representative from Abu Dhabi. Sultan Hasanal Bolkiah from Brunei Darussalam sent his representatives and gave a "khutbah stick".

Designed by Ir.H Ahmad Fanani from Atelier Enam architect bureau Jakarta who won architecture contest in 2001, MJAT combines Javanese, Islam, and Roman architectural style. The main building is a typical Javanese mosque buildings but the tip section is equipped with a large dome 20 meters in diameter coupled with 4-high towers each 62 meters in each corners of the roof as a form of universal Islamic mosque complete with a separate tower of the mosque as high as 99 meters that named Asma Al-Husna tower.

Asma Al-Husna tower has 19 floors which 1st floor used for Radio DAIS MJAT, 2nd and 3rd floor for "Islamic history in Central Java" museum, 18th floor for restaurant, and 19th floor is for observe moonsighting (in Ramadhan). But visitor can visit the 19th floor that equiped by binocular telescope.

MJAT has 6 giant umbrella like in Masjid Nabawi. Each is 20 meters high with a width of 14 meters while expanding. The umbrellas opened during salah Jum'ah and Eid. But if visitor want to see the giant umbrella when opened, they can contact the masjid caretaker.

MJAT capacity is 6,000 jama'ah in masjid hall, and 10,000 on the terrace.

Masjid Agung Jawa Tengah, besides prepared as a place of worship, is also prepared as a place of religious tour. To support these objectives, this Grand Mosque has a guest house with a capacity of 23 rooms of varying class, so that the pilgrims who wish to stay overnight can use the facilities. Also availble a convention hall.

Al Mashun Grand Mosque, Medan

Al Mashun Grand Mosque is another prominent religious attractions in the city of Medan, is located on Masjid Raya Street, about two hundred meters from the location of the Maimun Palace. Al Mashun Grand Mosque built in the reign of Sultan Al Rashid Perkasa Alamsyah Ma’mum of the Deli Sultanate, the Sultanate of Deli land compensation fund that is used as a tobacco plantation area which was opened by a Dutch planter named Nienhuys in 1865.

Grand Mosque Al Mashun, with Moroccan-style design. Arstitek designer at the beginning was van Erp, who also designed the Palace Maimun, but then Dingemans appointed to draft a mosque after van Erp summoned to Java to help the work of restoration of Borobudur temple in Central Java. This mosque construction work began on August 21, 1906, and inaugurated during the Friday prayer on September 10, 1909.

I have guessed, there must be a comment like this.

Yes, Riau province govt spent much money to rebuild and enlarge masjid An-nur. But people of Riau did not mind with it. Different than Taj Mahal India that actually a grave yard, Masjid An-Nur Pekanbaru is intended as da'wah centre, and public space where people can gather and meet the other there.
