Alternative to watching movies for English learners

    Report bad ads?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmetullahi wa barakatuhu,

I am an English learner and need to improve my language skills. I always hear watching movies are a good opportunity to improve your English, but the problem here is as we all know movies are haram. I have watched a lot of documentaries but that isn't so helpful. Therefore I am looking for other ways to get involved into the language. Or at least some suggestions for non haram movies would be appreciated.

Can you give me some advises how to achieve that aim?

It would be hard to recommend books as we are not familiar with your tastes, interests, or even level of English in addition to the possible 'moods'. So really anything that you might find interesting like books on the prophets.

Why would it a wrong intention? You are 'discovering' the deen and practice English. Much better than watching TV or browsing through other useless sites

    Peace

Re: Alternative to watching movies for English learners

If you wrote all that yourself, then you have better English then some native speakers.

But We have internet we have TVs, when people no longer wish to give good advice on conduct, and people no longer socialise in a productive manner and just chit chat. People have heard the signs ie the earthquake in 2004, and watched it on their TV and read on so much. There are people who are lonely and watch TV for company or live in a family that does not communicate very well.

So I'm not one of those who are going to go so far and say TV/Internet is a problem. There are also many islamic channels and of course we are here on the internet. I'm one of those who have collected the natural documentary programmes of Yellowstone and the BBC Blue Planet and the Wild China, Russia series have shown me what I wouldn't have been able to see. There are the black and white ones (I have Agatha Christie Miss Marple staring Margaret Rutherford includes "Murder She Said"). So entirely up to you to search on genre and what your happy to watch.

I wish that I had used this strategy when I was learning French.

Learning a subject from a textbook is not something I enjoy (e.g., studying for CCNA) since I prefer to learn with a 'hands-on approach'.

So, to learn a language, one must live it (e.g., figuratively speaking, I have to eat, drink, sleep CCNA).

Sorry for the idiomatic expressions and wouldn't blame you for being confused:

Re: Alternative to watching movies for English learners

From my experience, the biggest challenge in learn English is recognize a word that spoken. In example, "one" and "want" sound similar, but have different meaning.

So, if we want to able to communicate in English, learn from book is not enough. We still need to listen, and talk.

Is there alternative to learn to recognize English words beside from movies?. People speak English not only in movies. We can listen to the news, talk show, documentary, etc.

Re: Alternative to watching movies for English learners

    Wa Aleykum Assalam,

jazak Allahu khairan, for your answers and excuse me for my late response.

Yes, I wrote that short text myself, indeed. Thank you for your compliment.

I am actually able to understand spoken English. Here and there are words that I am not familiar with, but I understand context. What I need to improve is my writing (I thing a good start would be to start writing ^^) and spoken English in daily situations, so I thought it would be good to watch movies. Because I watched a lot of documentaries in English and I am sure they helped me especially in regard to general knowledge. Although when I consider that in a bit more detail, it's not worth to watch movies to improve English, so you could get in touch with filthy stuff. Even, when you look up for documentaries sometimes, you wonder what kind of documentaries were made.

To the intention part: I don't know, may be I am too strict to myself, but it feels strange as though I don't learn my deen more I am here to learn English. On the other hand I like it to be here, it is verily not a waste of time and may be I would even get some hasanat?

I am here because I want to build a silaturahim with my brothers and sisters from other places, and also to improve my English. Learn Islam?. I don't need this forum if I just want to learn Islam. I live in Muslim majority country where I can easily get access to Islamic knowledge. Even one of my uncle is Islamic teacher (Previously two before one passed away).

It's okay if your intention to join in this forum is to improve your English beside build a silaturahim with other Muslims.
