Long age and Large bodies in the Quran?

    Report bad ads?

Does the quran say anything about people in the ancient days living until very old ages. As in much larger than anyone could now. I know an example of this is prophet Noah but I'm talking about common folk. Did they used to live longer and have bodies much larger than us now?
    Thank you

I'm not sure whether common folk are mentioned separately, but since prophet Nooh lived more than 950 years, it can be inferred that people living in his times also lived that long.
If I recall correctly, there is a Hadith that mentions longer lifespans of previous generations.

Re: Long age and Large bodies in the Quran?

I couldn't find any specific details at the moment, but the following Hadith implies that previous generations had much longer lifespans.

Ziyad related to me from Malik that he had heard a man he trusted of the people of knowledge say, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was shown the lifespans of the people (who had gone) before him, or what Allah willed of that, and it was as if the lives of the people of his community had become too short for them to be able to do as many good actions as others before them had been able to do with their long lives, so Allah gave him Laylat al- Qadr, which is better than a thousand months." Re: Long age and Large bodies in the Quran?

The passage of time is mentioned in the quran.. specifically the people of the cave and another example..

“Or (take) the similitude of one who passed by a hamlet, all in ruins to its roofs. He said: “Oh! How shall Allah bring it (ever) to life after (this) its death?” but Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him up (again). He said: “How long did you tarry (thus)?” He said: (Perhaps) a day or part of a day.” He said: “Nay, you have tarried thus a hundred years; but look at your food and your drink; they show no signs of age; and look at your donkey: And that We may make of you a sign unto the people, Look further at the bones, how We bring them together and clothe them with flesh.” When this was shown clearly to him, he said: “I know that Allah has power over all things.”-

    And also..

“Then We drew (a veil) over their ears, for a number of years, in the Cave, (so that they heard not). Then We raised them up that We might know which of the two parties would best calculate the time that they had tarried”

Apart from that, i cant really recall anything..

Its not really relevant to your question but information none the less.

Re: Long age and Large bodies in the Quran?

Prophet Nooh pbuh lived longer than his people did if I remember correctly. It was said that as Nooh continued to spread the message of Truth, one generation would teach the next not to listen or trust the messenger, and this continued for many generations so that way as they get older, they would talk about how their forefathers said such and such about the messenger. I got that from the book "Stories of The Prophets". I'm still reading through it but I'll try to find where I got that from.

@Scimitar recommended the book and so far, I find it to be a great read.

It must have been millions and millions of years ago, since there are no historical records of people even living past 120 years old. Humans have only recently began to live longer.

    Not necessarily. According to http://www.ancient-origins.net/human...093?nopaging=1,

Joseph P. Hou, Ph.D., acupuncturist, wrote in his book “Healthy Longevity Techniques”: “According to Chinese medical records, a doctor named Cuie Wenze of the Qin dynasty lived to be 300 years old. Gee Yule of the later Han dynasty lived to be 280 years old. A high ranking Taoist master monk, Hui Zhao, lived to be 290 years old and Lo Zichange lived to be 180 years old. As recorded in the The Chinese Encyclopedia of Materia Medica, He Nengci of the Tang dynasty lived to be 168 years old. A Taoist master, Li Qingyuan, lived to be 250 years old. In modern times, a traditional Chinese medicine doctor, Lo Mingshan of Sichuan province, lived to be 124 years old.”

The Shahnameh or Shahnama (“The Book of Kings”) is a Persian epic poem written by Ferdowsi around the end of the 10th century A.D. It tells of kings reigning 1,000 years, several hundred years, down to 150 years, and so on.

According to the Holy Quraan the people of Aad (the nation of the Prophet Hood alaihi salaam) had very big and tall bodies. When they were killed by the Wrath of continuously blowing wind, their bodied were lying in their houses like the trunks of the palm trees.

Re: Long age and Large bodies in the Quran?

It is understood that Adam a.s. and Nooh a.s. lived about one thousand years. We do not know whether their communities lived as long as they did or not. However, since prophets are examples to their communities, it is probable that they lived as long as their prophets. As a matter of fact, our Prophet lived as long as the average lifespan of the community and died when he was 63 years old.

The view among scholars vary on Nooh a.s. ranging from 950 years to 1700 years.

Allaah says concerning the length of time that Nooh (peace be upon him) remained calling his people:

“and he stayed among them a thousand years less fifty years” [al-‘Ankaboot 29:14]

Regarding the height, we were giants who shrunk over time.

“Allaah created Adam and he was sixty cubits tall. Then He said, ‘Go and greet those angels and listen to how they greet you, for that will be your greeting and the greeting of your progeny.’ He said, ‘Al-salaamu ‘alaykum (Peace be upon you).’ They said, ‘Al-salaamu ‘alaykum wa rahmat-Allaah (Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allaah).’ So they added the words ‘wa rahmat Allaah.’ And everyone who enters Paradise will be in the form of Adam. People kept on growing smaller until now.”

    Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3336; Muslim, 7092

According to a version narrated by Muslim: “Everyone who enters Paradise will be in the form of Adam who was sixty cubits tall. People kept growing smaller until now.”

With regard to the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), “People kept growing smaller until now,” al-Haafiz ibn Hajar said in Fath al-Baari (6/367): “This means that in every generation people grew shorter than the previous generation, and continued to grow shorter until the time of this ummah, then they stayed like that.”

    https://islamqa.info/en/20612

Regarding how old mankind is, there is nothing in Islam that defines the period between Adam and Muhammad (peace be upon them both); indeed the length of time that Adam (peace be upon him) lived is not known.

But there are some ahaadeeth and reports which, if we put them together, we can arriver at an approximate length of time, but that not cover the complete period.

10,000 years : The period between Adam and Nooh (peace be upon them both)
10,000 years : The period between Nooh and Ibraaheem (peace be upon them both)
unknown : The period between Ibrahim and Moosa (peace be upon them both)
1700 years : The period between Moosa and ‘Eesa (peace be upon them both)
600 years : The period between and ‘Eesa and Muhammad (peace be upon them both)
1400 years : age of Islam
    -------------
    27,700 years

    https://islamqa.info/en/20907

930 years : Life span of Adam a.s.
950 years : Life span of Nooh a.s.
195 years : Life span of Ibraaheem a.s.
125 years : Life span of Moosa a.s.
    -----------
    1,200 years

    http://www.eislamicarabic.com/prophets-ages.html

    27,700 + 1,200 = 28,900

So by estimate, not counting the gaps, we could say humans have been around for about 29,000 years. 10 centuries as mentioned above is a long gap. If we were to assume the unknown gap above is less than or equal to 70 centuries then human age on earth can't be no more than 100,000 years and not 100s of thousands or millions as some think. Of course, only Allah knows the real numbers but if I were to put a number on it i would think that to be a ball park estimate.

Re: Long age and Large bodies in the Quran?

    @Zzz_

a reasonable guess in the above and the period between Ibrahim AS and Musa AS could be above 1400 years (as Luth AS was related to Ibrahim AS as seen in Quran when Ibrahim AS and Luth (Lot) AS were living in the same period and when Ibrahim AS argues defending with the Angels as they visited him on some news (of Issac i think) and were sent to destroy Lot's people. ) and this wiki sheds some light on it, but Allahu aalam

''Astronomical research has suggested that Sodom and Gomorrah may have been destroyed by an asteroid that has been dated to June 29, 3123 BC on the proleptic Julian calendar. ''

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodom_and_Gomorrah

but any links or proofs for 1700 years between Musa AS and Esa AS ?

and the hadith above a affirms the diminishing size and life of humans which said '' ’ And everyone who enters Paradise will be in the form of Adam. People kept on growing smaller until now.”

But when hadith says that there were about more than 120,000 prophets sent to the world and Glorious Quran says that they were sent in every nation and language and only the bani Israeel has received about 1000 prophets and so will be the Middle East would not exceed 2000 prophets and then where are the 118,000 + Prophets gone and their periods ?

This could well extend the length of time on what we are pondering about, Allahu aalam

Re: Long age and Large bodies in the Quran?

    @talibilm

    :wsalam:

Adam and Nooh lived for 900+ years so it's reasonable to see the time between them would be 10,000. But after Nooh the age and size of men started to drop. Also being the only man whose lineage spread after the flood makes him kind of like a 2nd Adam, a 2nd father of mankind.

If you look at the age of the prophets afer Nooh , they range in the 100s. If we look at the time period between them, it also ranges under 2000. Ibrahim lived for 195 years where as Musa lived for 125 years, and being a descended of Ibrahim, he is not far from the family treet (Ibrahim - Ishaq - Ya'qub - Imran - Musa). If we were to assume everyone lived to 200 after Ibrahim up to Musa, that would give us 600 years. But let's say we assume the largest period time of 10,000 years.

28,900 + 10,000 = 29,900 years. Even if exaggerate that to 50,000 even. That's about the age of mankind on earth. So we are fairly new to this planet where as the jinns have been here eons before us and their live span extends into thousands.

As for your other concerns, the 1700 years between Musa and Esa came from the link shared previously of islamqa.

Regarding the number of prophets. There is no sahih hadith that states how many prophets came. The hadith about 124,000 prophets is one of many daef hadith out there. You can read more about it here : https://islamqa.info/en/95747

There were many prophets that came from the same immediate family. Ibrahim and his two sons were prophets. Musa and his brother Harun were prophets together, and there are other examples of such.

Also, there were many prophets that came in the time of other prophets. An example of this is Khidr and Musa and their meeting. You can read about their interaction here: https://www.alim.org/library/biograp...%20Al-Khidr%20

more on that here : https://www.islamweb.net/emainpage/i...twaId&Id=51729
