    Clothing

    Report bad ads?

“Whosoever dresses himself out of pride in this world, Allah will dress him/her with the same clothing on the day of Qiyamah and he/she will be entered in to Hell.” (Sunan Ibn Majah)

Can anyone elaborate on this hadith please? Does this mean you can't be happy with what you are wearing or feel happy if others think your clothing is good? Does anyone know of the authenticity of this hadith?

    Re: Clothing

(39)Chapter: The prohibition of pride and definition of it

It Is narrated on the authority of Abdullah b. Mas'ud that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), observed:
He who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of pride shall not enter Paradise.
A person (amongst his hearers) said: Verily a person loves that his dress should be fine, and his shoes should be fine.
He (the Holy Prophet) remarked: Verily, Allah is Graceful and He loves Grace.
Pride is disdaining the truth (out of self-conceit) and contempt for the people.

An-Nawawi on pride and vanity in clothing

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

An-Nawawi records in his book Riyad us-Saliheen:

Abdullah ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever drags his garment out of pride will not be looked upon by Allah on the Day of Resurrection.

Abu Bakr said, “Indeed, one of my robes will slide down unless I am cautious about it.” The Prophet said:

Verily, you are not doing it out of pride.

Source: Sahih Bukhari 3465, Grade: Sahih

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Allah will not look on the Day of Resurrection to those who would trail their garment out of pride.

Source: Sahih Bukhari 5451, Grade: Sahih

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whatever is below the ankles from the garment is in the Hellfire.

Source: Sahih Bukhari 5450, Grade: Sahih

Abu Dharr reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

There are three to whom Allah will not speak on the Day of Resurrection: the one who does not give in charity except with reminders, the one who sells goods with a false oath, and the one who trails his garment out of pride.

Source: Sahih Muslim 106, Grade: Sahih

Ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

The one who wears a garment or a shirt or a turban, whoever trails anything from it out of vanity will not be looked upon by Allah on the Day of Resurrection.

Source: Sunan An-Nasa’i 5334, Grade: Sahih

Jabir ibn Sulaim reported: I saw a man whose opinion was followed by everyone and no one would contradict what he said. I asked who he was and I was told he was the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. I said to him twice, “Upon you be peace, O Messenger of Allah.” The Prophet said:

Do not say upon you be peace, for that is the greeting for the dead in the time of ignorance. Rather say peace be upon you.

I asked, “Are you the Messenger of Allah?” The Prophet said:

I am the Messenger of Allah, Allah who will remove your affliction when you are distressed and you call upon him, who will cause food to grow for you when you are starving and call to him, who will restore your lost animal in the desert when you call upon him.

I said, “Give me instructions.” The Prophet said:

    Do not abuse anyone.

I have not abused anyone since, neither a freeman, nor a slave, nor a camel, nor a sheep. The Prophet said:

Do not hold in contempt a small act of goodness, because even speaking to your brother with a cheerful face is an act of goodness.

Hold up your lower garment halfway to the leg and at least above the ankles, for trailing it is arrogance and Allah dislikes pride. If a man disparages you because of bad qualities he knows you have, then do not disparage him for the bad qualities you know he has. Verily, he will only earn the consequences of his abuse.

Source: Sunan Abu Dawud 4084, Grade: Sahih

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw a man performing his prayer with his lower garment trailing and he said:

    Go and perform ablution again.

The man went and came back after performing it. The Prophet said:

    Go and perform ablution again.

Someone said, “O Messenger of Allah, you asked him to perform ablution but you did not give the reason.” The Prophet said:

He performed his prayer while his lower garment was below his ankles. Verily, Allah the Exalted does not accept the prayer of a man who trails his garment.

Source: Sunan Abu Dawud 638, Grade: Sahih

Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

The garment of a Muslim should be halfway down his shins and there is no harm if it comes between that and the ankles, but whatever is lower than the ankles is in the Hellfire. Whoever trails his garment out of vanity, Allah will never look at him.

Source: Sunan Abu Dawud 4093, Grade: Sahih

Ibn Umar reported: I passed by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while my garment was trailing. The Prophet said:

    O Abdullah, raise your garment.

I lifted it up and he told me to raise it higher and I did so. Some of the people said, “To where should it be raised?” The Prophet said:

In the middle of the shins.

Source: Sahih Muslim 2086, Grade: Sahih

Ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever trails his garment out of pride will never be looked upon by Allah.

Umm Salamah said, “O Messenger of Allah, what should the women do with the hem of their clothes?” The Prophet said:

Lower it by a hand’s length.

She said, “What if their feet are uncovered?” The Prophet said:

Lower it by an arm’s length but not more than that.

Source: Sunan An-Nasa’i 5336, Grade: Sahih

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever gives up fine clothing out of humility for Allah while he is able to wear them, then Allah will call him on the Day of Resurrection in front of all His creation and He will allow him to choose whichever garment of faith he desires.

Source: Sunan At-Tirmidhi 2481, Grade: Hasan

Umar ibn Al-Khattab reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Do not wear silk clothing. Verily, those who wear it in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter.

Source: Sahih Muslim 2069, Grade: Sahih

In another narration, the Prophet said:

Verily, this silk clothing is for those who have no share in the Hereafter.

Source: Sahih Bukhari 906, Grade: Sahih

Ali ibn Abu Talib reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, took a piece of silk in his right hand and a piece of gold in his left hand, then he said:

Verily, these two have been made forbidden to wear for the males of my nation.

Source: Sunan Abu Dawud 4057, Grade: Hasan

Abu Musa reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, Allah the Exalted has made lawful silk and gold for the women of my nation, but he has forbidden them for men.

Source: Sunan An-Nasa’i 5265, Grade: Sahih

    Hudhaifah reported:

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prohibited us from eating and drinking out of golden or silver vessels, and he prohibited us from wearing silk or brocade and sitting upon anything made from them.

Source: Sahih Bukhari 5499, Grade: Sahih

    Anas ibn Malik reported:

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, gave a concession to Az-Zubair and Abdur Rahman to wear silk when they were suffering from rash.

    10. We bestowed upon David favor from Us: “O mountains, and birds: echo with him.” And We softened iron for him.

    11. “Make coats of armor, and measure the links well; and work righteousness. I am Observant of everything you do.”

    12. And for Solomon the wind—its outward journey was one month, and its return journey was one month. And We made a spring of tar flow for him. And there were sprites that worked under him, by the leave of his Lord. But whoever of them swerved from Our command, We make him taste of the punishment of the Inferno.

    13. They made for him whatever he wished: sanctuaries, statues, bowls like pools, and heavy cauldrons. “O House of David, work with appreciation,” but a few of My servants are appreciative.

    14. Then, when We decreed death for him, nothing indicated his death to them except an earthworm eating at his staff. Then, when he fell down, it became clear to the sprites that, had they known the unseen, they would not have remained in the demeaning torment.

    15. In Sheba’s homeland there used to be a wonder: two gardens, on the right, and on the left. “Eat of your Lord’s provision, and give thanks to Him.” A good land, and a forgiving Lord.

    16. But they turned away, so We unleashed against them the flood of the dam; and We substituted their two gardens with two gardens of bitter fruits, thorny shrubs, and meager harvest.

    17. We thus penalized them for their ingratitude. Would We penalize any but the ungrateful?

    18. Between them and the towns We had blessed, We placed prominent towns, and We made the travel between them easy. “Travel between them by night and day, in safety.”

    19. But they said, “Our Lord, lengthen the distances of our journeys.” They wronged themselves; so We made them history, and We scattered them in every direction. In this are lessons for every steadfast and appreciative person.

    20. Satan was correct in his assessment of them. They followed him, except for a group of believers.

    21. He had no authority over them; except that We willed to distinguish him who believes in the Hereafter, from him who is doubtful about it. Your Lord is Guardian over all things.

A warning against arrogance towards Allah :

    [Quran Chapter 79]

    15. Has the story of Moses reached you?-

    16. When His Lord called out to him in the sacred valley of Tuwa.

    17. "Go to Pharaoh—he has transgressed."

    18. And say, "Do you care to be cleansed?

    19. And I will guide you to your Lord, and you will turn reverent."

    20. He showed him the Greatest Miracle.

    21. But he denied and defied.

    22. Then turned his back, and tried.

    23. And gathered and proclaimed.

    24. He said, "I am your Lord, the most high."

    25. So Allah seized him with an exemplary punishment, in the last and in the first.

    26. In this is a lesson for whoever fears.

    [Quran Chapter 27]

    20. Then he inspected the birds, and said, "Why do I not see the hoopoe? Or is he among the absentees?

    21. I will punish him most severely, or slay him, unless he gives me a valid excuse."

    22. But he did not stay for long. He said, "I have learnt something you did not know. I have come to you from Sheba, with reliable information.

    23. I found a woman ruling over them, and she was given of everything, and she has a magnificent throne.

    24. I found her and her people worshiping the sun, instead of Allah. Satan made their conduct appear good to them, and diverted them from the path, so they are not guided.

    25. If only they would worship Allah, who brings to light the mysteries of the heavens and the earth, and knows what you conceal and what you reveal.

    26. Allah—There is no god but He, the Lord of The Magnificent Throne."

    27. He said, "We will see, whether you have spoken the truth, or whether you are a liar.

    28. Go with this letter of mine, and deliver it to them; then withdraw from them, and see how they respond."

    29. She said, "O Counselors, a gracious letter was delivered to me.

    30. It is from Solomon, and it is, 'In the Name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.

    31. Do not defy me, and come to me submissively.'"

    32. She said, "O counselors, advise me in this matter of mine. I never make a decision unless you are present."

    33. They said, "We are a people of might and great courage, but the decision is yours, so consider what you wish to command."

    34. She said, "When kings enter a city, they devastate it, and subjugate its dignified people. Thus they always do.

    35. I am sending them a gift, and will see what the envoys bring back."

    36. When he came to Solomon, he said, "Are you supplying me with money? What Allah has given me is better than what He has given you. It is you who delight in your gift.

    37. Go back to them. We will come upon them with troops they cannot resist; and we will expel them from there, disgraced and humiliated."

    38. He said, "O notables, which one of you will bring me her throne before they come to me in submission?"

    39. An imp of the sprites said, "I will bring it to you before you rise from your seat. I am strong and reliable enough to do it."

    40. He who had knowledge from the Book said, "I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you." And when he saw it settled before him, he said, "This is from the grace of my Lord, to test me, whether I am grateful or ungrateful. He who is grateful, his gratitude is to his own credit; but he who is ungrateful—my Lord is Independent and Generous."

    41. He said, "Disguise her throne for her, and we shall see whether she will be guided, or remains one of the misguided."

    42. When she arrived, it was said, "Is your throne like this?" She said, "As if this is it." "We were given knowledge before her, and we were submissive."

    43. But she was prevented by what she worshiped besides Allah; she belonged to a disbelieving people.

    44. It was said to her, "Go inside the palace." And when she saw it, she thought it was a deep pond, and she bared her legs. He said, "It is a palace paved with glass." She said, "My Lord, I have done wrong to myself, and I have submitted with Solomon, to Allah, Lord of the Worlds."

    Re: Clothing

Trailing the Hem of a Garment for a Woman

Hadeeth No. 460 from Silsilah Ahadeeth as-Saheehah

    By the

    Muhadith, Allama, Ash-Shaykh

    Muhammad Nasir ud-Deen al-Albaani

    Translated By

    Abbas Abu Yahya

“On the authority of Umm Salamah: that when the Messenger of Allaah -SallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – said what he said about trailing the hem of a garment for the woman.

Umm Salamah mentions: then I asked: O Messenger of Allaah! How should we trail the hem of a garment?

He said: Trail it by a hand span.

Umm Salamah said: But the feet become uncovered!

Then he said: Then trail it a forearms length.”

I (al-Albaani) say: In this hadeeth there is a proof showing that the feet of a woman are ‘Awrah (i.e. those parts of the body that must be covered) and this was a matter that was well known amongst the women at the time of the Prophet sall’Allaahu alayhi wasallam.

Since, when the Prophet said: ‘Trail it by a hand span,’ Umm Salaamah said: “Then the feet become uncovered” and from this, one feels that she knew that the feet are from the ‘Awrah. It is not permissible to uncover them and the Prophet – SallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – reaffirmed that for her and that is why he commanded her to trail her garment a forearm’s length.

In the Noble Qur’aan there is a reference to this fact and that is the saying of Allaah Ta’aala: <<And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment>> [Soorah Noor: 31]

    Book 27, Number 4025:
Abu Burdah said: I entered upon 'Ai'shah, and she brought a coarse lower garment that was manufactured in the Yemen and a patched garment called mailabbadah. She swore by Allah that the spirit of the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) was taken in these, two clothes.

Abu Zumayl (a transmitter) said: Ibn Abbas was handsome and of imposing countenance. Ibn Abbas said: I then came to them and they said: Welcome to you, Ibn Abbas! what is this suit of clothes? I said: Why are you objecting to me? I saw over the Apostle of Allah (peace?be?upon?him) the best suit of clothes.
Abu Dawud said: The name of Abu Zumail is Sammak b. al-Walid al-Hanafi.

WEARING CLOTHES MADE OF SILK AND WOOL (KHAZZ)
    Book 27, Number 4027:
    Narrated Sa'd:
I saw a man riding on a white mule and he had a black turban of silk and wool. He said: The Apostle of Allah (peace?be?upon?him) put it on me. This is the version of 'Uthman, and there is the word akhbara in his tradition.

    Book 27, Number 4028:
Narrated Abu Amir or Abu Malik:
Abdur Rahman ibn Ghanam al-Ash'ari said: Abu Amir or Abu Malik told me--I swear by Allah another oath that he did not believe me that he heard the Apostle of Allah (peace?be?upon?him) say: There will be among my community people who will make lawful (the use of) khazz and silk. Some of them will be transformed into apes and swine.

He said: Apostle of Allah, would that you purchased it and wore it on Friday and when a delegation came to you. The Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: Only he who has no portion in the next world wears this (silk): Then the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon. him) came in possession of some robes made of silk and gave one of them to Umar b. al-Khattab. 'Umar said: Apostle of Allah, you are clothing me with it, but you said about the robe of 'Utairid what you said. The Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: I did not give it to you so that you may wear it. So 'Umar b. al-Khattab gave it to his brother who was a polytheist in Mecca to wear it.

    Book 27, Number 4030:
The tradition mentioned above has also been narrated by 'Abd Allah b. 'Umar through a different chain of narrators. This version has: He said: A robe of silk brocade. He then sent him a jubbah of brocade and said: You may sell it and fulfil your need.

    Book 27, Number 4031:
Abu 'Uthman al-Nahdi said: 'Umar wrote to 'Utbah b. Farqad that the Prophet (may peace be upon him) forbade (wearing) silk except so-and-so, and so-and-so, to the extent of two, three, or four fingers.

    Book 27, Number 4032:
'Ali said: A robe containing silk was presented to the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him). He then sent it to me. I wore it and came to him. I saw him looking angry in his face. He then said: I did not send it to you to wear. He ordered me and I divided it among my women.

    The Bracelet of Kisra

At the time of the Hijra (the migration from Mecca to Medina), the Prophet (saws) and Abu Bakr were being chased across the desert. The Quraysh were pursuing them and had a bounty of 100 camels placed on the Prophet’s head. In one gathering around Mecca, a man came in and said he had seen two men walking through the desert and it was possible that they were Muhammad and Abu Bakr. Suraqa ibn Malik, one of the Bedouins in the gathering, deceptively denied that this could be the case, but secretly left the gathering and prepared his horse to pursue the two men. He wanted to gain the reward of 100 camels.

Abu Bakr would constantly be looking back and he was very worried about being caught, whereas the Prophet (saws) was completely calm and reciting Quran. When Suraqa ibn Malik came close to them, the front legs of his horse sank into the sand and he fell. He thought this odd because his horse never did this before. So he got back onto his horse and continued pursuing them. The same thing happened again! The third time it happened, he saw a wall of dust in front of him. So after this, when he approached the Prophet he came to beg for peace. Initially he had come to kill the Prophet but now he was asking the Prophet for a pledge of protection!

So the Prophet (saws) gave him the promise of protection from any future violence in writing, and he said to Suraqa ibn Malik: “What about a day when you will be wearing the Bracelets of Kisra.” There was only one Kisra and everyone knew who this was, but this statement was so shocking that Suraqa ibn Malik had to clarify again: “Kisra!?” The Prophet (saws) said “Yes, Kisra the son of Hermuz.”

Now these Bracelets were very famous, the equivalent to the Crown Jewels in our days. These large bracelets were worn by the Persian Kings, who would simply rest their hands in them as a show of power. For a man who was fleeing persecution and on the brink of assassination, this promise seemed hardly appropriate!

Years later, when the Muslims came to the land where Suraqa ibn Malik lived, they were going to kill him. But he pulled out this piece of paper which had the Prophet’s promise on it, and this paper saved his life. He then became Muslim, and during the time of Umar he joined the army that one day conquered Persia. The treasures of Persia were brought back to Umar, and amongst the booty were these famous bracelets. Umar called Suraqa ibn Malik and told him to wear the bracelets and tell the story to the people. So on that day, a Bedouin man from the Arabs was wearing the Bracelets of Kisra, the most famous at the time – a promise given to him by the Messenger of Allah (saws) decades before.
