    Mealworms and other Insects

    Report bad ads?

    Salam Aleykum Brothers and Sisters

I have a question about mealworms in foods.
The EU approved of stretching foods with mealworms, with the plan of more and more Insects in foods.
Now i can gladly tell my family to stop eating biscuits and such things.
But even flour or pasta is/will be stretched with mealworms.
Now that this business is booming and novel foods are the future in Europe and there's almost no more escaping from it, i'm not very trusting in halal store's anymore either. My brother said i can trust halal store's,but I'm thinking some of them would not care because the effort to provide pure halal is becoming almost non existent with these new rules.
Now some people i know say it's okay, but reading online this can be compared with meat. Vegans refuse mealworms as it is meat for them.

I don't think mealworms are halal? Which foods do you think will have mealworm in it and what's the best alternative especially when it comes to bread?

    Thanks everyone.

What is the ruling on eating insects, vermin and rodents?
    Answer
    Praise be to Allah.

    Al-Nawawi said:

According to the scholars, the vermin of the earth such as snakes, scorpions, dung beetles, cockroaches, rats etc., are haraam. This is the view of Abu Haneefah, Ahmad and Dawood.

Al-Shaafa’i and his companions quote as evidence for that the aayah,

“and prohibits them as unlawful Al-Khabaa’ith (i.e. all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons and foods),”

    [al-A’raaf 7:157 – interpretation of the meaning]

These are things which the Arabs find repulsive. And they quote as evidence the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “(There are) five animals, all of which are evil and should be killed in the Haram (sanctuary of Makkah): crows, kites [a kind of bird], scorpions, rats and vicious dogs.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari and Muslim from the report of ‘Aa’ishah, Hafsah and Ibn ‘Umar). It was narrated from Umm Shurayk that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) commanded the killing of lizards. (Narrated by al-Bukhaari and Muslim). With regard to the aayah (interpretation of the meaning):

“Say (O Muhammad): ‘I find not in that which has been revealed to me anything forbidden to be eaten by one who wishes to eat it, unless it be Maytah (a dead animal) or blood poured forth (by slaughtering or the like), or the flesh of swine (pork); for that surely, is impure or impious (unlawful) meat (of an animal) which is slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allaah (or has been slaughtered for idols, or on which Allaah’s Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering).” [al-An’aam 6:145]

al-Shaafa’i and other scholars said: what this refers to is things which you used to eat and regard as good. Al-Shaafa’i said: this is the most likely meaning of the aayah, based on the Sunnah. And Allaah knows best.

    https://islamqa.info/en/answers/2712...larvae-of-bees

    Praise be to Allah.

The larva is the immature form of an insect that emerges from the egg; it is regarded as a transitional stage before the insect is fully grown; its shape resembles that of a worm.

The larval stage in bees begins when the egg hatches and a small, cylindrical larva emerges; it has no legs or eyes, and is white in colour. Before the egg hatches, the worker bees secrete a little royal jelly around it, then when it hatches, the workers continue to secrete royal jelly to feed the larva for three days. After a while, the larva begins to expand lengthways in the honeycomb, then it begins to spin a cocoon, which is called the pupal stage.

The larva is one of the stages in the lifecycle of the bee, and it is narrated that it is forbidden to kill bees; the prohibition on eating them is understood from the prohibition on killing them, because the basic principle is that whatever it is forbidden to kill, it is not permissible to eat, because if it were permissible to eat it, it would be permissible to kill it.

Abu Dawood (5267) narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas said: The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) forbade killing four creatures: ants, bees, hoopoes and sparrow-hawks. Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani.

The scholars of the Permanent Committee said:

There is a prohibition on killing hoopoes, and from the prohibition on killing them it is understood that it is prohibited to eat them, based on the principle that prohibition means a thing is haraam. It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) forbade killing four creatures: ants, bees, hoopoes and sparrow-hawks. Narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawood and Ibn Maajah. Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar said regarding this hadith: Its men are the men of as-Saheeh. Al-Bayhaqi said: It is the strongest report that has been narrated concerning this matter.

    End quote from Fataawa al-Lajnah ad-Daa’imah (22/293).

Because the larva is one of the stages in the lifecycle of the bee, killing the larva is like killing the bee, and eating the larva is like eating the bee. Therefore it is not permissible. Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan (may Allah preserve him) was asked about the ruling on eating the larvae of wasps, and he replied:

The wasp is a type of bee, and the Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) forbade killing bees, so it is haraam. End quote.

    http://www.saif.af.org.sa/ar/node/549

Moreover, eating larvae is akin to eating worms and insects, the basic principle concerning which is that it is not permissible, especially if they are the main element of a dish and are eaten on their own, and are not found in some food or fruit in which they have grown.

See the answers to questions no. 21901 and 114855.

    And Allah knows best.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

You know these big boys out there who are anti-eating meals because they think people are overpopulating the Earth and the Earth and resources can no longer handle human population (because they don't believe Allah is the sustainer and controller of things), why not just feed humans, well..humans? I mean if they are going this way, why not go extreme? You get to win-win..lower human population and you have huge resources of meat! Wonder why I went this extreme horrible route? Because I promise you this is the route they are taking us into. They will say hay, insects are important part of the ego system and there will be people who are anti-eating insects as they have feelings too and the push will go in that direction. Either they are pushing for cannibelism or pushing for manufactured meat from labs and only Allah knows what this will do to the human body. I am surprised people are not forming rally to stop this crap!
