    Greed Destroys Deen

Once the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said to Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu): “O Ibn Umar, what will your condition be when you come upon a community who store a year’s provision for lack of reliance and trust (in Allah)?” [Minhaaj ul-Abideen by Imaam Ghazali]

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) is telling his Sahabi in this hadith that a time will come when there will be Muslims who do not have faith in Allah’s promise of provision. It would be hard on the Sahabah to see such people, how would they take it?

Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) says in the Quran, “Surely, Allah He it is that gives sustenance, the Lord of solid power.” [Surah Dhariyaat, Ayat 58]

A thief of shrouds repented from his sin at the hands of Bayazid Bustami (rehmatullah alaihi). When Bayazid asked the thief about the graves, he said: “I stole about 12,000 shrouds from graves but I found only two male faces facing the Qiblah.” Bayazid Bustami said that those who had no reliance on Allah in the matter of their livelihood had their faces turned away from the Qiblah. [Minhaaj ul-Abideen by Imaam Ghazali]

When Muslims are buried they are laid in their graves such that their faces face the Qiblah. However, if we believe that our jobs, employers, businesses, spouses, etc, are feeding us and it is not through the Will of Allah and the provision He has earmarked for us, then we do not see Him as Ar-Razzaq (The Provider). If we don’t look towards Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) in life, then we don’t deserve to have our faces look towards Him (face the Qiblah) in death and He orders the angels to turn our faces away.

    Re: Greed Destroys Deen

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “It is written on the back of every fish and bullock that it will be the sustenance of such and such persons. As such, it is only unnecessary labour for a greedy person to be in search of his sustenance.” [Minhaaj ul-Abideen by Imaam Ghazali]

Man’s sustenance was allotted and distributed in the very beginning of the creation of the universe.
It is necessary for me to have complete faith in this Divine Dispensation and conviction that no alteration in it is possible.

After putting faith in the eternally original distribution of sustenance, it is a matter of disgrace in the world and loss in the Hereafter to search for sustenance desperately and fretfully.

I should work for a lawful income. The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “It is compulsory on every Muslim to seek lawful earnings.” [Ihya Ulum Id-Din by Imam Ghazali]

However, I must pay full attention to my prayers, not compromising on them or any other order of Allah’s (e.g. loyalty to Islam and Muslims, behaviour, speech, dress, or anything else) to make a living. Nobody can take away what is destined for me. And nobody can give me what is not written for me.

    @Eric H :

What is predestined, reaches us, so we should seek halal means of earnings, if do nothing, reaches us in form of alms.

    Peace..!

Why are you quoting sufis and those not reliable and spreading that on here. Why don't you use authentic hadith books rather then reference some questionable imams? What's your real motive?

Even though al-Ghazzaali was very advanced in knowledge, he had little knowledge of hadeeth and its sciences, and he could not distinguish between sound ahaadeeth and weak ones. He and others like him did not have enough knowledge of hadeeth to qualify them as ordinary scholars of hadeeth, let alone as prominent scholars in that field.

    Re: Greed Destroys Deen

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “That flesh is more deserving of Hell-Fire which has grown from unlawful food.” [Minhaaj ul-Abideen by Imaam Ghazali]

Once Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) drank a little milk given by his female slave and asked her about it. She said, “I prophesied to a people who gave it to me for that.” So he thrust the fronts of his fingers into his throat and vomited in such a way that his life was in danger. Then he said, “O Allah, I pray to You for forgiveness of what remains attached to my throat and to my stool.”

In another narration it is related that when the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) was informed of it, he said, “Don’t you know that Abu Bakr does not allow anything to his belly except lawful food?” [Ihya Ulum Id-Din by Imam Ghazali]

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Beware of greed, for verily it destroyed those who were before you. They spilled each others blood, and broke their family ties (due to it). And oppression will be darkness’s on the Day of Resurrection.”

(Ahmad, Ibn Hibbaan and Al-Bukhaaree in Al-Adab. Albaanee said it is Saheeh in Al-Adab, 470)
