In old India, if a married (Hindu) man died, his widow was burnt alive with him. People then visited the place of cremation and worshipped the dead woman, believing that her sacrifice had made her into a goddess.
This practice was outlawed by the British and classed as murder. But a widow wasn't ever allowed to remarry. Hindus believed she was a bad omen and stop females from their families having any contact with her. Her own family treated her like a plague and quiet often widows were sent to 'aashrams' to spend the rest of their lives there.
