    Question Details

Question: Assalamu aleikum I'd like to know the oppinion shariah about vaccination. Some muslims say that vaccination is against our belief and qadar. But the others say that Allah Taala ordered us to protect ourselves. How should it be? Is the vaccination haram and against qadar or not? Or is it really should be made for our health as it was said by doctors?JazakaALLAHU hairan.
Answer: Getting vaccinations and immunity shots is not only permissible but also recommended or even obligatory-when warranted by circumstances in order to prevent spreading of diseases. This is the ruling of eminent jurists endorsed by the world council of Muslim jurists and others.
Islam teaches us to take care of our health by taking preventive measures as well as by receiving treatments and taking medications. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “O Servants of Allah! Get treatments and take medications, for Allah has sent down cures even as He has sent down diseases" (Reported by Bukhari and others).
Now as for the question, whether getting vaccinations or immunity shots would fall in the the category of opposing the Divine Decree, which as Muslims, we ought to accept and surrender to; the answer was given by the Caliph Umar. As he was traveling to one of the cities in Syria, he was told that it was stricken with cholera. Umar as was customary in such cases gathered the companions to consult them on the course of action; after due deliberations, he decided to turn back without entering the city. On seeing this, Abu Ubaydah, one of the eminent companions, asked him, “Are you running away from the decree of Allah," to which Umar replied, “No. Rather we are fleeing from one decree of Allah to another!” In other words, even as it is God who sends down diseases, it is His decree that we must guard ourselves and take preventive measures not to get sick. So, in both cases, we are still operating within the parameters of the Divine Decree.

Most of us have a first hand experience with vaccinations as recepients or caregivers so if they do opine it is educated. Not all vaccines are necessary but many are life saving and helped eleminate some deadly outbreaks.

Not every meningococcal vaccine is halal.

In 2010 Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has conducted audits on three brands of meningococcal vaccines. Here the result:

    Halal
    - MENVEO MENINGOCOCCAL Group A, C, W135 and Y Cnnyugate Vaccine. Produced by Novartis Vaccine and Diagnotis S.r.l, Italy
    - MEVAC ACYW 135. Produced by Zheiyiang Tianjuan, China

    Haram
    - MENCEVAX ACYW 135. Produced by Glaxo Smith Kline, Belgium.
