Re: Heart Burn and related issues

    Salam Alaykum,

I've been suffering from a Hiatal Hernia since like... forever. I have all the symptoms of Gerd: Heart burn at an extreme point. At first, it showed after some particularly spicy food. Then, the pain woke me at night, so I skipped dinners: No result. After that, the pain got worse. It didn't matter if I ate or not. In fact, now, when I am fasting my weekly Monday and Thursday, the pain gets its climax. Followed each prescription religiously. It almost works for a couple of weeks, then, back to the pain again. Doctor told me to avoid all the food that can 'excite' the stomach, I did. Deleted tomatoes, bananas, oranges, lemon, peppers, spices, lamb, leben, fries .... from my diet. No results. He told me to lose some weight, i lost more than 16 pounds and I still suffer. I can say that the pain is even worse. It even interferes in my prayers. I tried herbal remedies, practised more sport, did rukyah, ate honey, olive oil and ginger on a daily basis. For the first time in my life, I am afraid not to be able to do my fasting

I'm sorry, I can't be of any help. I hope your case is not like mine.

Re: Heart Burn and related issues

I had stubborn gas for years and never knew it. For years I thought I had a heart problem... I find that chewing a few mint leaves after meals alleviates the gas and also freshens breath to boot.

Another thing I do after I eat is massage the area around my heart and stomach, simple circular movements like when you burp a baby - that works for me.

Cut out any fizzy frinks, and keep to water and milk.

Love yourself. That works the best. Looking after oneself is the best form of loving oneself. It's simple advice...

...As for the sister above me, I pray that Allah eases your pain and sufferring and gives you the strength and shifaa to fast this ramadhan, Ameen.

Re: Heart Burn and related issues

I suffered terribly from heartburn when I was a young boy (around 12). The cause was my constant worrying about anything and everything. When I got older and got interested in Religion I learned that worrying is a bad habit that we nurture. If it goes unchecked then it progresses into 'anxiety', and then your in Deep.....(you know what). But worrying can be eliminated from your life by appealing to your God given faith and realizing that worry is based on nothing real, but, rather, we cultivate it. I can eat like a horse and don't hardly remember what heartburn is. God be with you, chuckla.

    :ws:

I'm really sorry to hear this, I can't imagine the pain you're going through.

The Prophet said, "No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that." [Bukhari]

You'll be rewarded abundantly for the pain inshaAllah.

Regarding the hernia.. Have they offered corrective surgery? A friend of mine had this done recently and after the initial post-surgery pain and discomfort, she seems to be doing ok alhamdulillah. I understand the situation is different here but from what I've seen and read, hernias can be repaired by inserting a mesh lining to strengthen the abdominal wall.

I pray that Allah SWT grants you shifa. Ameen.

Re: Heart Burn and related issues

I get heart burn and acid reflux some times. I found that baking soda (sodium bicarbonate as this is a weak basic or alkiline) in water does the trick but too much will act as a laxative, about one level teasoon in a glass of water is good. Black seeds otherwise known as kalonji or nijella seeds may be good too they are bitter and used sparingly on naan bread. Muhammad (PBUH) said that they will cure everything except death.

    sister,

Im really sorry to hear of this.

Im not sure if you have ever had a gastro-scope performed (a camera that is inserted down the food-pipe, into the stomach and duodenum) - if not, then this would be advisable. If it has been performed some time ago, it would also be advisable to have it repeated.

The reason being, is that you have not obtained adequate response/ your symptoms appear to be worse, despite medical treatment and lifestyle changes.

In view of this, a gastro-scope will, in shaa Allah, make it possible to visualise if there are any other problems (apart from the reflux) that needs to be addressed:

e.g. Peptic Ulcers: some ulcers require antibiotics (as they are caused by an infection called H.Pylori) in addition to conventional ulcer treatment.
(Your symptoms appear to be worse when you are fasting/ not eating - which sometimes occurs with ulcers that are located in the duodenum).

Perhaps your pain is originating from a cause that is completely separate from your reflux (and hence it is not responding to your current management) or as a complication of long-standing reflux (e.g. inflammation or narrowing of the food-pipe)
Hence in shaa Allah, a gastro-scope will be a good idea to exclude these causes

Finally, if your symptoms of reflux are still persistent despite the above measures, then, as advised by sister Aisha, surgery is indeed an option.

Alhamdulillah, nowadays, these procedures can be performed laproscopically (by the help of cameras) which means that the incision required and the time to recovery is minimized.

May Allah (subhanawataála) ease your difficulties, as well as that of all our brothers and sisters who are suffering all types of afflictions.
And may He open the flood-gates of His mercy and answer all our duaas in this coming month of Ramadaan.
    Ameen Ya Rabb.

Re: Heart Burn and related issues

First, I'd like to thank you for your concern and your prayers. Yes, sister Zaria, I did have a fibroscopy/gastroscopy. In addition to the hernia, I suffer from an oesophagitis type2. Well, my case is hereditary. My father suffered from it and so does my elder brother. Concerning the surgery, my doctor advised me not to choose this option for there are 50% chances that the symptoms get back. I was told to adapt my life style to this illness: Never eat right before prayers or sleeping, take liquids three hours before or after the meals, walk a lot, always elevate the level of the matress when sleeping AND try to avoid all kind of stress. I think the last one is the hardest part. But anyway, I'm not giving up trying. One more thing, I know all the values of dates, however, when I eat one or two, it causes heartburn. Is it just me or is it somehow common?

    sister,

The oesophagitis (which means inflammation of the food-pipe), that you have mentioned is a complication of long-standing reflux (rather than being an seperate diagnosis in itself).
This occurs because acid and bile are not meant to come in contact with the lining of the food-pipe (the cells that line the oesophagus are very different from the cells that line the stomach, and chronic exposure to this acid can sometimes cause transformation of these cells - a term called Barrets oesphagus) - and hence this causes hurt and inflammation.

Most literature reports a success rate of surgery for GERD (referring to a procedure called laproscopic Nissan Fundoplication with correction of the hiatal hernia as well - which is the current 'gold standard') at 90-95%.
However, the most important factors to, in shaa Allah, achieving long-term success are:
    1. The expertise of the surgeon: <--- Really, really important!
'Expertise' is generally regarded as a surgeon who performs at least 20 of these procedures per year.
If it is not a 'high volume' surgeon, then success rates may differ/ be less.
If your doctor has quoted a success rate of 50%, then this could be his personal figures , or perhaps he is considering a different procedure.

    2. Weight
Patients who are obese tend to require a more detailed procedure and have poorer long-term success rates.

If you ever reach the point where you wish to consider surgery (e.g. because of the severity of symptoms, impact on your daily living, and other complications), then the pros of surgery carefully need to be weighed against the cons, with your surgeon of choice.

The following 3 links provide may be helpful in providing a balanced view between medical and surgical therapies, as well as more detail on the procedure:

    http://www.cleveland.com/healthfit/i...ry_for_ge.html

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2886454/

    http://www.refluxmd.com/learn/resour...cedures-glance

(With regards to dates causing heartburn - in your case, this is most likely due to your hernia/ reflux, rather than the dates itself.
Your reflux does sound quite severe, considering that you have symptoms even when fasting (and the stomach being empty), and being on medical therapy).

May Allah grant you complete shifaa', and make this trial a means of great rewards for you.
    Ameen
