    Downs Syndrome

    Report bad ads?

I was wondering does anyone have any information for parents or siblings with children or siblings with Downs?

Anyone knows any programs to help them learn to read and write? Or to speak properly?

Also, does anyone know any programs to show you how to teach them, so they understand properly and fully benefit from what you are trying to explain to them?

Lastly, any information on potty training for them ?

InshaaAllah any information would be highly appreciated.

May Allah reward you for your time Ameen

    Re: Downs Syndrome

Children with Downs Syndrome don't function differently from other children -they are just slower, and - depending on the severity of their disability - there may be some skills they can never learn.

I work with adults with learning disabilities, so I have a very limited knowledge about children and their development (but I can try to find out).
Certainly many adults with DS lead happy and fulfilled lives, learn to read and write and to carry out daily living skills. Some manage to hold down paid jobs. Some get married.

    But others are profoundly disabled.
Patient training, repeating tasks consistently, using rewards systems and praise, and gentle teaching (many DS children are taught in special schools) will go a long way - but you can only get the brain to learn what it is physiologically able to learn!

Mostly parents learn to love their children the way they are (as all parents should, with all children) - including their strengths and their weaknesses!

I will ask a colleague in the pediatric service if she has any advice.

    Re: Downs Syndrome

awwww forgive me for i forgot to check up on this thread. THANKS! for the advice. My little brother has it, and i dont know how to teach him how to write. We have this program for him to learn to read, but its only to read the words on the program not like how you and i learned to read, so we could read anything we picked up.

Also potty training is like non exsisting....he refuses to go....No matter how many times i try to put him on the toliet so maybe it becomes ritual, he never even looks at the bathroom on his own.

Al Hamdulillah for the most part he's doing okay, he can walk and all that. But he's 6 years old and cant talk as of yet , Allahu mustaan, thats how come i wanted to know if anyone had any resources InshaaAllah.

I do really really appreciate your response.

    Thank you.

    Assalamoalikum Ummniyah,

May Allah give u patience sister.
I know one thing abt diabilities that ppl with them r mostly stubborn. My aunty who is disabled too is often very stubborn. We have to find ways of dealing with her. For eg. with love, rewards, appreciation, etc

last week I read abt DS in a newspaper in kwt. It didn't talk abt the ways of managing ur DS child but it was informative on whole. They say ppl with DS r locked inside their brains.

    Re: Downs Syndrome

    Greetings and peace be with you Umniyah;
Like glo I also work with people with downs, some of them never learn to read and write, having said that they are wonderful people and I learn so much from them. A couple with downs got married four years ago and I felt it a great privilege to be at their wedding. Like all of us they have very real and pressing needs, but they are often not able to express what they want because of their communication problems.

So when they become challenging and upset we have to try all the harder to try and understand what it is they need. Just imagine having a headache and not being able to let someone know. Imagine being cold or not liking some food and not being able to say; or if you are unhappy but you are not able to express what is bothering you.

It has been found that young children learn sign language quicker than they learn to talk. In England there are some children’s tv programmes that have sign language. It would also mean parents and family members trying to learn this also. If he is not talking he might have a hearing problem also. They all need lots of love.

    Blessings and peace

    Eric
