With regard to Creationism, I'm interested in how some Islamic Creationists categorize reason or intelligence as an irreducible property just like matter.

I'd like to know more about this hypothesis if anyone is knowledgeable.

you ask very sophisticated questions, I am pretty sure it isn't over your head, but I understand that it is in fact lengthy and very time consuming.. perhaps you can enjoy it as a light read before you go to bed at night? if you read two pages a night you will finish it in a little over three weeks...

Re: Islamic Views: Creationism & Evolution

*disclaimer: I am not a Muslim. I am just saying what I have heard from other Muslims/Imams/Sheikhs on the topic*

Islam says that all humans were created from a single soul. Not only that, but it calls people "children of Adam" not only in the Qu'ran, but also in Muhammad's farewell speech. The Qu'ran says that the creation of Adam was like "Be" and it was. Muslims beleive that Adam was made with clay, water, dirt, and then the spirit(I believe called Ruh) was breathed into him, and he was created. Then, Eve was. And from there, all humans have been from.

So does this go against the belief that we all evolved? Yes, in my opinion it absolutely does! Because in my belief(I believe in evolution) we have evolved over thousands of years, and we were not breathed in a spirit or anything. We just.. Evolved from another species!

In terms of evolution of other species.. Islam does not deny nor affirm, as the Qu'ran/sunnah/Salafi are silent on the issue.

In terms of the age of the earth.. Islam does not dispute with modern science, as the Qu'ran/Sunnah/Salafi do not specify.

Remember.. Evolution is usually categorized in two branches. Macro and Micro. Micro happens all the time. Most Muslims do not dispute that.

It is Macro evolution(the belief that we evolved from another species) that Muslims dispute.

I hope that helps! If you would like me to show verses, just ask and I will look them up for you, as well as tafsir if you would like

Also, your name is uno-dios.. Spanish for one god. Are you a convert?! If so, congrats and I hope all goes well

hmm nice speech, anyway i am sure u ment to say millions of years and that is right islam does not deny evolution, in a matter of fact in some ways muslim scholars agree with some of it(the bit that makes sense) not the bit that we evolved spontaneous out of nothing) because no one believes in that people just try to get round it

    Peace,

Friend, unfortunately I am not very wise man. I'm not sure that I can defend against your assertions here but I would say that if we broke the theory of Evolution down we might find that there is a lot which is shared with Islamic Theology (both are derived from the same author ).

So does this go against the belief that we all evolved? Yes, in my opinion it absolutely does! Because in my belief(I believe in evolution) we have evolved over thousands of years, and we were not breathed in a spirit or anything. We just.. Evolved from another species!
'We' have evolved over thousands of years or the vessel which now holds our unique person-hood has evolved over thousands of years? When is a man a man and no longer an animal? When is the soul of a child placed within him or her? Is the same possible in man? Could their be life without a soul? What is the Soul? Do animals have them? These are all questions we must ponder, I think, before we reach the conclusions you have reached. Honestly, I have much more to go on this journey before I will reach my conclusion.

It is Macro evolution(the belief that we evolved from another species) that Muslims dispute.
I don't believe that any Muslim would dispute what is without question. When and if Macro evolution becomes a fact I'm sure we will be enlightened with greater clarity how to understand Al-Qur'an.

Micro evolution wise, sure.. Islam does not seem to dispute that. but I am speaking about Macro evolution.. Which means that we descended from another species.
By the way, you seem very wise!! Do not put yourself down lol!

Well, I think humans are animals, I think that the soul depends on your definition. If by soul you mean when can ones tart thinking and feeling.. Well, we are not sure. Some say around 22 weeks, others say earlier. We are not sure. Animals have similar functions in the womb, so I would say they have a soul too.

I don't believe that any Muslim would dispute what is without question. When and if Macro evolution becomes a fact I'm sure we will be enlightened with greater clarity how to understand Al-Qur'an.
The Qu'ran is clear. I will post some references in just a second.

Please, offer me what you can to reflect on.
Sure! I can get you verses from the Qu'ran that say that humans were made from X and all that if you want, but for now I will show you the verses that say that humans were created from one person.

It is He Who created you from a single person, and made his mate of like nature, in order that he might dwell with her in love" (7:189)
    Tafsir -
Allah states that He has created all mankind from Adam, peace be upon him, and from Adam, He created his wife, Hawwa' and from them, people started to spread. Allah said in another Ayah,

(O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honorable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has Taqwa) ﴿49:13﴾, and,

    ﴿يَـأَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُواْ رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِى خَلَقَكُمْ مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَحِدَةٍ وَخَلَقَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا﴾

    (O mankind! Have Taqwa of your Lord, Who created you from a single person, and from him He created his wife.)﴿4:1﴾ In this honorable Ayah, Allah said;

Oh humankind! We created you from a single pair of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, so that you may know each other (not that ye may despise each other). Verily the most honoured among you in the sight of Allah is the who is the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things)" (49:13).
    Tafsir -
Allah the Exalted declares to mankind that He has created them all from a single person, `Adam, and from that person He created his mate, Hawwa'. From their offspring He made nations, comprised of tribe, which include subtribes of all sizes. It was also said that `nations refers to non-Arabs, while `tribes refers to Arabs. Various statements about this were collected in an individual introduction from the book, Al-Inbah, by Abu `Amr Ibn `Abdul-Barr, and from the book, Al-Qasad wal-Amam fi Ma`rifah Ansab Al-Arab wal-`Ajam. Therefore, all people are the descendants of `Adam and Hawwa' and share this honor equally. The only difference between them is in the religion that revolves around their obedience to Allah the Exalted and their following of His Messenger . After He forbade backbiting and belittling other people, alerting mankind that they are all equal in their humanity. Allah said,

(O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes that you may know one another.) so that they get to know each other by their nation or tribe. Mujahid said that Allah's statement,

(that you may know one another.) refers to one's saying, "So-and-so the son of so-and-so, from the tribe of so-and-so.'' Sufyan Ath-Thawri said, "The Himyar (who resided in Yemen) dealt with each other according to their provinces, while the Arabs in the Hijaz (Western Arabia) dealt with each other according to their tribes.''

O mankind! Reverence your Guardian-Lord, who created you from a single person, created of like nature his mate, and from them twain scattered (like seeds) countless men and women;- reverence Allah, through whom you demand your mutual (rights), and (reverence) the wombs (That bore you): For Allah ever watches over you}* (An-Nisaa' 4:1)
    Tafisr -
Allah commands His creatures to have Taqwa of Him by worshipping Him Alone without partners. He also reminds to them of His ability, in that He created them all from a single person, Adam, peace be unto him.

(And from him He created his wife) Hawwa' (Eve), who was created from Adam's left rib, from his back while he was sleeping. When Adam woke up and saw Hawwa', he liked her and had affection for her, and she felt the same toward him. An authentic Hadith states,

    «إِنَّ الْمَرْأَةَ خُلِقَتْ مِنْ ضِلَعٍ، وَإِنَّ أَعْوَجَ شَيْءٍ فِي الضِّلَعِ أَعْلَاهُ، فَإِنْ ذَهَبْتَ تُقِيمُهُ كَسَرْتَهُ، وَإِنِ اسْتَمْتَعْتَ بِهَا اسْتَمْتَعْتَ بِهَا وَفِيهَا عِوَج»

(Woman was created from a rib. Verily, the most curved portion of the rib is its upper part, so, if you should try to straighten it, you will break it, but if you leave it as it is, it will remain crooked.) Allah's statement,

(And from them both He created many men and women means, Allah created from Adam and Hawwa' many men and women and distributed them throughout the world in various shapes, characteristics, colors and languages. In the end, their gathering and return will be to Allah.
I just know that there is another verse that speaks about humans being created from just Adam and Eve. But I do not remember the verse!

Also, as for verses that call people "children of Adam" ...
    7:26
    7:27
    7:31
    7:35
    7:172
    17:70
    36:60

Yes and Thank you most kindly! Were you ever Muslim before you became Atheist?
De nada! Anyways, I was a Catholic before I became an atheist. I was never a Muslim(even though at one time I seriously questioned it.) I was not an ultra devout Catholic, but I was devout enough to be considered "practicing" lol

Re: Islamic Views: Creationism & Evolution

As for the Hadiths on Adam.. There are a TON. I did a search on "Adam" and got the following results. Obviously, not all of them say we descended from Adam, and some of them speak about Adam and his life, and have nothing to do with kids. But, some do call us sons of Adam, daughter of Adam(like the first one of Sahih Bukhari) etc etc.

Oh, I have much sympathy for devout Roman Catholics whose institution have done so much to drag down their iman (faith and fidelity).

But don't throw that which is precious out with the dirty water of men's errors. God is Great and He is above any errors that man can do. I would ask, most humbly, that all who have fallen away from the belief in God look again for Him in silent places where men do not drown His 'still small voice'. :sunny:

With regard to our friends interpretation of Al-Qur'an...

He it is Who has revealed to you the Scripture, whereof some Ayats are Decisive- these are the Mother of the Scripture, and others are allegorical. Then as to those in whose hearts there is perversity, they in fact follow the allegorical part of it seeking trouble and seeking to give it interpretations. But no one knows the interpretation of it except Allah. And the steadfast in knowledge would say: "We believe in it,- the whole is from the presence of our Rabb." And no one minds except those possessed of understanding. (Surah Al-e-Imran: 6)

It is important for us to understand how to interpret what is fundamental (i.e Mother of the Scriptures) and what is allegorical. If we take everything with the most literal meaning perhaps we make fools of ourselves?

I read these passages you have offered and I ponder there true meaning. Tradition (Hadith) can be strong or weak and we must understand them in the historical context in which they are given no?
