    Cupping Therapy - Hijama

The Great Prophet of Islam Mohammed (PBUH) advised cupping in about 28 holy instructions (Hadits) and urged the people to use it. According to a hadith narrated

By Anas Ibn Malik, The Prophet PBUH said,

“I did not pass by any group on the night of Al-Isra, unless they said to me O Muhammad, tell your Ummah to do cupping.” ( Collected by Ibn Majah:3477)

He explained that it is one of the best medicines:

“The best medicine with which you treat yourselves is cupping, or it is one of the best of your medicines.” Or “The treatment you can use is cupping.” [collected by Al-Bukhari: 5371]

The messenger of Allah (PBUH) also said :

“Cupping is the most helpful procedure for human beings to cure themselves.”

    [Collected by Al-Bukhari: 5357, and Muslim 5371]

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said :

“ The best treatment is cupping, it removes blood, lightens the back and sharpen the eyesight.” [ Collected by Al – Hakim 4/212 and At-Tirmidhi 3053]

Anas ibn Maalik (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger ( Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam ) said,

"Indeed the best of remedies you have is cupping (hijama)…" [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5371)].

Abu Hurairah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger ( Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam ) said,

"If there was something excellent to be used as a remedy then it is cupping (hijama)." [Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3857), Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3476)].

    The Angels Recommending Cupping (Hijama)

Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger ( Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam ) said,

"I did not pass by an angel from the angels on the night journey except that they all said to me: Upon you is cupping (hijama), O Muhammad." [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3477)]

In the narration reported by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allaah be pleased with him) the angels said,

"Oh Muhammad, order your Ummah (nation) with cupping (hijama)." [Saheeh Sunan Tirmidhee (3479)]

Rasullullah (saw) said," Jibrail alaisalam repeatedly emphasised upon me to resort to cupping to the extent that I feared that cupping will be made compulsary." - Jamul' Warsaii p.179

Rasulullah (saw) praised a person who performs cupping, saying it removes blood, lightens the back and sharpens the eyesight (Jamul Warsaai p. 179.The above quoted al-Hadith is clear that cupping was practised by rasullulah (saw) himself and strongly recommended by him.

Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Healing is to be found in three things: drinking honey, the knife of the cupper, and cauterization of fire.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 10/136).

According to a hadeeth narrated by Jaabir (may Allaah be pleased with him), the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If there is any good in your medical treatments, it is in the knife of the cupper, drinking honey, or cauterization with fire, as appropriate to the cause of the illness, but I would not like to be cauterized.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 10/139)

According to a hadeeth narrated by Anas ibn Maalik, may Allaah be pleased with him, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “I did not pass by any group on the night when I was taken on the Night Journey (Isra'), but they said to me, ‘O Muhammad, tell your ummah to do cupping.'” (Reported by Ibn Maajah; it has corroborate evidence which strengthens it).

Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was treated with cupping, and he paid the cupper his fee.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 10/124; Muslim 1202).

    Narrated AbuKabshah al-Ansari:

The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) used to have himself cupped on the top of his head and between his shoulders, and that he used to say: If anyone pours out any of his blood, he will not suffer if he applies no medical treatment for anything. ( Book 28, Number 3850)

    Narrated Abu Hurayrah:

The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: If anyone has himself cupped on the 17th, 19th and 21st it will be a remedy for every disease.( Book 28, Number 3852)

It should also be noted, however, that some adverse effects may occur in some few individuals. Nothing harmful, but can be a bit frightening if you don't know it might happen, such as passing out or being sick even if you have no fear of blood. Very rare but it can happen. It's a really, really fast detox and it can come as a bit of a shock to your body. Most people are fine though.

That's one reason why it's good to do some thorough research and get a good practitioner who is prepared and understanding should such a thing happen such as fainting. I remember getting it done just on the top of my back, bottom of the neck and I had no apprehension or anxiety. After the cup came of (and the blood had stopped flowing... very little blood was taken) I felt sick and then just fell asleep spontaneously on the spot (or that's what it felt like), but the practitioner said I had fainted and I had heaved a lot like I was going to be sick. Alhamdulilah she was kind and very calm, helped me remain calm (I was oddly not scared as I would expect to be if that had happened) and knew exactly how to handle the situation. Made sure I was still seated, hugged me gently and held me steady until I came around again. I was up and about as if nothing had happened within about ten minutes thanks to the medicinal honey in water she gave me to give me some energy again, and feeling really healthy and light and energetic within a couple of hours.

Family said I looked exceptionally and noticeably well when I got home, and I felt it too. So it must have removed some nasty stuff from me. I'm pretty sure my blood was a bit toxic beforehand. I'd definitely like to try having it done again.
