    Deaf Muslim

    Report bad ads?

    Salam Alaikum,

You probably clicked on this post because of the title. It is true, I was born profoundly deaf in both ears. But do not feel sorry for me because I have cochlear implants that act as my ears. You can google it and read more about it if interested. Anyways, I signed up to keep myself from the dark side of the internet. My faith has weakened over the years due to what I have been and am surrounded by (I'm a first year college student with lofty goals) and need to work on it desperately as The Hour nears. Enough said about me. Inshallah my faith will become very strong and my heart will change from black to white and remain that way. Jazaakallahukhayran.

    Re: Deaf Muslim

    Assalamu Alaikum again!

I've been wanting to start transcribing lectures for the deaf inspired by a member we had once here (I don't remember her name unfortunately ) since you have experience with being deaf, and excuse my ignorance, but is there a certain way the deaf community prefers to receive their lectures/islamic information?? As in, is it better to do it with video + subtitles, or just a transcription, or using ASL? Any other information would also be helpful. I've tried googling for transcribed lectures, and it doesn't seem like there's really any :/ and some lectures are really inspiring and beautiful and I would love to help share it with those who can't access them. (:

    Salam alaikum sister,

It does not matter how the lectures are given, whether it is in sign language, subtitled, etc...I am very experienced with all methods. I do want you to know that I can hear perfectly with the cochlear implants (a blessing from Allah I am very grateful for). Thanks for taking my deafness into consideration, it truly means a lot to me. Jazaakallahukhayran.

I realized I did not answer your question completely. It is very common to have lectures subtitled from personal experience, but in school before I began college my classes had an interpreter that signed what the teacher was saying. If you have any more questions, do not hesitate to pm me.

    Re: Deaf Muslim

Oh ok jazak allahu khair, that's very helpful. I can type quickly in English and I'm teaching myself to type the same way in Arabic, I've learned 5 years of spanish (which I have to brush up on!), teaching myself French, and strengthening my Arabic, so I'd like to put some skill to good use for the Muslim community that doesn't have a lot of resources. I wanted to learn ASL at one point, but the reason I didn't was because I didn't know which country I'd be living in and if it would be useless to learn it since it differs from country to country, plus I really suck at retaining languages if I don't practice them often with someone who's fluent in it, and truth be told I have not met a lot of deaf people except a few online.

Inshallah I will try to start this week with some of my personal favorite lectures and I will encourage others to help me inshallah, even if they just transcribed one video of their favorite lecture. My ultimate plan is to find a way to do them in different languages so it can be accessed by everyone around the world.

I apologize if this is a dumb question lol, but do you know many other deaf muslims??

    Re: Deaf Muslim

Assalamu-alaikum akhee and welcome to the forum.

Alhamdulillah, you are truly blessed to have had cochlear implants that through His will, has given you complete hearing. SubhanAllah!

I was just wondering: what are the requirements that a deaf person need to meet, before being eligible for a cochlear implant? Are most deaf people prevented from this surgery only because of lack of funds/ resources.....or is it not feasible for everyone?

How long have you had your implants for?

    Re: Deaf Muslim

I do know a few deaf Muslims, but some of us have gone separate ways. It is amazing to interact with deaf people as they are so energetic and easy to talk to. However, it is tough to maintain a relationship with the deaf people because from personal experience bullying and depression take place more often than in a "normal" society, not very many make it far in their life. Most of my deaf friends that graduated from high school went on to work either in a grocery store, post office, factory...blue collar jobs...I'm getting a little off topic. Inshallah, I will post more about my experiences with the 'deaf world' since many of them have important life lessons. Oh and by the way, it took me roughly two years to learn ASL.

    Re: Deaf Muslim

Salam alaikum and may Allah shower you with His blessings for your dua. Before I answer your question, it is important to keep in mind that having a cochlear implant is a VERY controversial topic for the deaf people. Inshallah, I will talk more about the controversy, but need to know which topic to post it in. Anyways, basically the patient seeking a cochlear implant has to have literally no hearing in either one or two ears, it does not matter. It is HIGHLY recommended that infants diagnosed with severe hearing loss be implanted immediately because the older a child gets the lesser chance the person will be able to speak and hear clearly. In other words, the brain will be lazy to learn what sounds are being picked up. I was implanted at the age of 2 (1996) in my right ear and 18 (2012) in my left ear. It costs around 50-100k to be implanted and receive the cochlear implant/ear. Allhamdulilah, I was covered for my surgeries.

    Assalamu Alaikum

When it comes to forums,we all are deaf so this equal score.Allah must have benefitted you with another great ability in exchange for this,I am quite sure about it

Btw,all those things bring this ayah to my mind:

Have they not travelled in the land, and have they hearts wherewith to feel and ears wherewith to hear? For indeed it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts, which are within the bosoms, that grow blind.

Do you mean that they bully each other, or receive bullying from others? Either way this is so unfortunate

I would love to continue reading your posts about your experiences, so I do look forward to all your posts inshallah!

I have always wanted to have the experience of meeting blind and deaf students, especially children. I had been thinking of searching for some schools around my area just to volunteer some days and help out. It's truly humbling to see those who overcome any kind of disability they have, especially when they take advantage of their abilities and become better than those who have everything mashallah. It is quite inspirational and brings tears to my eyes thinking about it.

Jazak allahu khair for sharing your experiences with us. Please do feel free to post more.
