Assalamu-alaikum,
I think we have all expierenced fluctuations of our imaans - to a greater of lesser extent in our lives.
These are some of the reasons (I believe) play a role (many of them having been the cause of my own imaan waxing and waning at different periods of my life):
- Joining the wrong company:
If only we could realise what a huge impact this has on our imaans.
You may not realise it initially, but surrounding yourself constantly by those who are chasing this dunya, who lack fear of Allah, who live according to their desires......does NOTHING for our imaans, except to draw us away from Allah and his nabi (sallahu alaihi wasalam) and takes us closer to the fire.
- Engaging in major.....as well as minor sins.
Repeatedly engaging in minor sins, without turning back in repentance - is a strong magnet of turning the hearts away from the remembrance of Allah.
The family/ person who fills his mind with the filth on TV and internet, listens to zina-promoting music, etc. - how do we expect the noor of Islam to fill such hearts?
Theres no room for taqwa in those hearts.......until we off-load the manure that occupies it.
- Being neglectful of salaah - esp. not arising for Fajr and being unmindful of Asr prayers.
- Becoming too content in life.
The tragedy of man, is that when life is going really well - in terms of health, wealth and family - he becomes complacent and ungrateful to the One that has actually blessed him such bounties.
Even as you sit reading this - there is sooooo much going on in your body - spontaneously, effortlessly - all by the power of Allah (subhanawata'ala):
Your vision, the beats of your heart, your digestion of food and excretion of waste........its not even possible to enumerate them all......All occuring without you even thinking about it! Alhamdulillah!
If your really cosnider this, we should be spending every possible moment of every given day in supplication and thanks to Allah.
But we dont.
Why?
Because, we only realise the value of something when it is taken away from us.
Because we are ungrateful.
Because we forget. (Was the first sin committed by man, Adam (alaihi salam) not due to forgetfulness?)
And finally, as the late Sheikh Yunus Patel has said: there are times when even the pious slaves of Allah expierence 'lows' in their imaans - despite doing everything correctly and not disobeying Allah.
This is Allah Ta’ala’s way of keeping a balance. This ‘low’ offsets pride and thus saves a person from spiritual ruin. After this, if Allah so wills, He can always return him to his previous condition.
What wisdom in the plans of Allah!
SubhanAllah!
--> Which is why, brothers and sisters we should try to remember the following duaa, insha Allah:
It was narrated that Anas said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) often used to say:
«يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِك» (Yaa Muqallibal Quloob Thabbit Qalbee ‘alaa Deenik)
“O Turner of the hearts, make my heart steadfast in adhering to Your religion.”
[Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (2140) classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi and also al-Jaam'i as-Sagheer 1323/7988]
