Re: Tolerance of prophet PBUH towards other religions

    Asalaamu Alaikum,

There is a great example in the Prophet(pbuh) and the Sahaba(ra) and some of the early Caliphates that followed.

I'd like to share some of these instances -

    Saheeh Bukhari

    Volume 4, Book 53, Number 391:

    Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr:

The Prophet said, "Whoever killed a person having a treaty with the Muslims, shall not smell the smell of Paradise though its smell is perceived from a distance of forty years."
In another instance, a Jewish man named Zayd bin Sana came to the Prophet of Islam to reclaim a debt. He grabbed the Prophet by his robe and cloak, pulled the Prophet close to his face, and said, 'Muhammad, are you not going to give me my due? You and your clan Banu Muttalib never pay debts on time!' Umar, one of the companions of the Prophet, got agitated and said, 'Enemy of God, am I really hearing what you just said to God's Prophet. I swear by the One who sent him with truth, if I were not afraid that he would blame me, I would have taken my sword and cut your head off!' The Prophet looked calmly at Umar and censured him gently: "Umar, that is not what we needed to hear from you. You should have counseled me to pay my debts in time and asked him to seek repayment in a respectful manner. Now take him, repay him his debt from my money and give him an extra twenty measures of date." The Jewish man was so pleasantly surprised by the Prophet's behavior that he immediately declared his acceptance of Islam! (Ibn Kathir, al-Bidaya wal-Nihaya, Volume 2, p. 310)
Ibn Ishaq in his Sirah (biography of the Prophet) stated:

When the delegation of Najrani Christians came to the Prophet at Madinah, they entered his mosque in the afternoon to meet him. It was their prayer time, so they began to perform their prayer in the mosque. Some Muslims were about to prevent them from doing so, but the Prophet, upon whom be peace, said, 'Let them pray.' So they faced eastward and performed their prayer.
the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). 'Whoever makes a snide comment to a dhimmi (Non-Muslim) has earned Hell.' (Narrated by Ibn Hibbaan in his Saheeh)
Once, a dispute arouse between Ali bin Ali Talib, when he was the Caliph, and a Jewish man who went to Judge Shuray al-Kindi. Shuray tells the details of what happened:

"Ali found he was missing a suit of mail, so he went back to Kufa and found it in the hands of a Jewish man who was selling it in the market. He said, 'O Jew! That suit of mail is mine! I did not give it away or sell it!'

The Jew responded 'It is mine. It is in my possession.'

Ali said, 'We will have the judge rule on this for us.'

So they came to me and Ali sat next to me and said, 'That suit of mail is mine; I did not give it away or sell it.'

The Jew sat in front of me and said, 'That is my suit of mail. It is in my possession.'

I asked, 'O Commander of the Faithful, do you have any proof?'

'Yes,' Ali said. 'My son Hasan and Qanbar can testify that it is my suit of mail.'

I said, 'Commander of the Faithful, the testimony of a son in his father's favor is not admissible in court.'

Ali exclaimed, 'How Perfect is God! You cannot accept the testimony of a man who has been promised Paradise? I heard the Messenger of God saying that Hasan and Husain are the princes of the youth in Paradise.'
    (Al-Tirmidhi)

    The Jewish man said,

'The Commander of the Faithful takes me before his own judge and the judge rules in my favor against him! I bear witness that no one deserves worship except God and that Muhammad is His Messenger [the Jewish man accepted Islam], and that the suit of armor is yours, Commander of the Faithful. You dropped it at night and I found it.'
    (Abu Bakr Hayyan, Tarikh al-Qudat, Volume 2, p. 200)
'In the Name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful. This is the written statement of God's slave Abu Bakr, the successor of Muhammad, the Prophet and Messenger of God. He affirms for you the rights of a protected neighbor, in yourselves, your lands, your religious community, your wealth, retainers, and servants, those of you who are present or abroad, your bishops and monks, and monasteries, and all that you own, be it great or small. You shall not be deprived of any of it, and shall have full control over it.' (Abu Yusuf, Kitab al-Kharaj, p. 79)
This is the protection which the servant of Allah, Umar ibn Al Khattab, the commander of the faithful extends to them (non-Muslims): 'The safeguarding of their lives, property, churches, crosses, and of their entire community. Their churches are not to be occupied, demolished, or damaged, nor are their crosses or anything belonging to them to be touched. They will not be forced to abandon their religion, nor will they be harmed. None of the Jews will live with them in Illiya' (Jersusalem). (Tarikh At-Tabari, Volume 3, p. 609)
Umar ibn Al Khattab once saw an old Jewish beggar whom he found to be destitute. Ordering the state authorities to pay for his livelihood, he observed, "It is unjust if we collect the capitation tax from him in his youth and abandon him in his old age. (Abu Yusuf, Al-Kharaj, p. 126)

The caliph Umar ibn Abdul Aziz ensured that those from the dhimmis who grew old and lost strength were provided with money from the treasury. (Al Amwaal, Volume 1, p. 170)

Once when Umar was on his way to Syria, he came across some Christian lepers at Jabia. He ordered the financial authorities to give them help from the Zakah funds and to provide for them. (Al-Baladhuri, Futuh Al-Buldan, p. 177)
Umar ibn Al Khattab right before he died said:

    Saheeh Bukhari
    Volume 2, Book 23, Number 475:
    Narrated 'Amr bin Maimun Al-Audi:

I recommend him to abide by the rules and regulations concerning the Dhimmis (protectees) of Allah and His Apostle, to fulfill their contracts completely and fight for them and not to tax (overburden) them beyond their capabilities."

Umar said the above despite being stabbed by a Non-Muslim. Also see (Saheeh Bukhari Volume 004, Book 052, Hadith Number 287 & Volume 5, Book 57, Number 50)
It is stated in the Hanbali book of Fiqh, Matalib Ula An-Nuha:

"The ruler of the Muslim community is bound to protect the non-Muslims and to save them from aggression. Should they fall into captivity, the Imam must martial all the resources to secure their release and punish the transgressors against their lives and properties even if they were the sole non-Muslims living in a remote village." (Ibn Al Najaar Al Hanbali, Matalib Ula An-Nuha, Volume 2, p. 602-603)

In his book Al Furuq, Imam Al Qarafi al-Malaki, quoting from Maratib Al-Ijma' by Ibn Hazm, states:

"Muslims who have entered into a pact of dhimma, should fight until death with those who try to oppress non-Muslims in the Islamic state in order to abide by the guarantee given to them by Almighty Allah and His Messenger, upon whom be peace. Otherwise they will be considered as traitors."

The Maliki scholar Shihab al-Din al-Qarafi has stated in his book Al-Furuq,

"The contract of dhimma gives them certain rights over us because they are in our land under our protection and under the protection of Almighty Allah, His Messenger, and the Islamic religion. (Volume 2, p. 14)

In this conclusion, Imam Al Qarafi states:

"A contract whose fulfillment endangers the lives and property of Muslims who are protecting the subjects (non-Muslims) from harm is indeed a great one." (Al-Malaki, Imam Al-Qarafi, Al-Furuq, Volume 3, p. 15, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Matalib Ula An-Nuha, Volume 2, p. 602-603)
It is not only a matter of protecting the dhimmis from physical harm, but also from slander and backbiting. For it is not allowed for one to speak badly about the dhimmis for no justifiable reason as with towards the Muslims. (Al Furooq, Volume 3, p. 14)
The Arabs, to whom the Lord has given control over the world, treat us as you know; they are not the enemies of Christians. Indeed, they praise our community, and treat our priests and saints with dignity, and offer aid to churches and monasteries. (Arthur Stanley Tritton, The People Of The Covenant In Islam, p. 158)
In a letter to Simeon, the Archbishop of Rifardashir and leader of all the bishops of Persia, the Nestorian Patriarch Geoff III wrote:

'The Arabs, to whom God has given power over the whole world, know how wealthy you are, for they live among you. In spite of this, they do not assail the Christian creed. To the contrary, they have sympathy with our religion, and venerate our priests and saints of our Lord, and they graciously donate to our churches and monasteries.' (Sir Thomas Arnold, Invitation To Islam, p. 102)
One of the Muslims caliphs, Abdul-Malik, took the Church of John from the Christians and made it part of a mosque. When Umar bin Abdulaziz succeeded him as the new Caliph, the Christians complained to him about what his predecessor had done to their church. Umar wrote to the governor that the portion of the mosque that was rightfully theirs be returned to them if they were unable to agree with the governor on a monetary settlement that would satisfy them. (Yusuf Qaradawi, 'Ghayr al-Muslimeen fil-Mujtama' al-Islami,' p. 32)
The Wailing Wall in Jerusalem is known to historians to be the one of the holiest places of worship in Judaism. Some time ago, it was completely buried under rubble and heaps of debris. When the Ottoman caliph Sultan Sulayman came to know of this, he ordered his governor in Jerusalem to remove all the rubble and debris, clean the area, restore the Wailing Wall, and make it accessible for Jews to visit. (Abdul-Latif Hussayn, 'Tasamuh al-Gharb Ma'l-Muslimeen,' p. 67)
There's ofcourse, alot of other examples, these are just a few.

He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him [59:23]

it would seem that events conspire against a unity within monotheism..

honestly, you can't make it up.

guess that's why they call em Daesh.

Re: Tolerance of prophet PBUH towards other religions

Verily, those who believe (that is Muslims) and they who follow the Jewish faith, Christians and Sabians,,,,whosoever believes in God and the Last Day and does that which is right shall have their reward with the Lord. Fear shall not come upon them, nor shall they grieve. (Al Quran 2:62)

Unfortunately we have forgotten the message of the Quran, the message of tolerance, the message of acceptance of others and dignity of humans, regardless of their religious faith. We need to InshA'Allah come back to the way of tolerance towards others so they may see the light of Islam how bright it shines and how beautiful it is.

The intolerance that does exist in the Muslim world is due to ignorance of their Islamic scriptures or their misinterpretation by certain groups. May Allah (swt) guide the ignorant, Ameen.

I have read that polytheists (such as Hindus) are not allowed to remain in muslim controlled lands, according to the Quran. Is this true?
What about this tax on nonmuslims. Is that true also?

where I live everybody has to pay tax..

although sales goods include any tax applied to them.

some people avoid tax where they can and some people are entitled to lower rates of taxation..or none depending on circumstance.

is taxation unfair? ..Although not based on religion anymore.

Muslims are also morally obligated to pay a tax of 2.5%

these concepts have changed and the law relating to them is varied and at length.

I would almost assume that the existence of jizya negates your first question..

and the opening paragraphs on the wiki make it sound a lot less frightening than you imagine.

Although after a quick read it is not apparent what the jizya percentage is.

the flip side of the coin is that Robin Hood is apparently a good guy o_0

    Asalaam O Alaikum Brother Serenity...

I firmly believe that when Prophet Muhammad (sallAllahu Alaihi Wassallam) said that the Quran was his greatest Miracle, he meant the book gives references to people for all times. If we understand the verses of the Quran in the historical context only then we are not truly honoring the Quran.

The above Verse that I shared earlier can best be expounded by Maulana Imran Hosein in his recent book named Methodology of the Quran in its chapter called The believing Christian, the believing Jew and the Quran sheds light on this subject as to the extent of recognition that Quran provides to those who are Ahle Kitab (The People of the Scriptures i.e. Jews and Christians)

    Maulana Imran Hosein says:

"There are others, on the other hand, who examine the Qur’ān and are so impressed by it that they are not only convinced that it is indeed the Word of the One True God, but respond to it with tears in their eyes:

“For, when they come to understand what has been bestowed from on high upon this Apostle (i.e., when they realize the status of this Quran), you can see their eyes overflow with tears, because they recognize something of its truth; [and] they say: "O our Lord-God! We do believe; make us one, then, with all who bear witness to the truth.

    (Quran, al-Māidah, 5:83)

The Quran confirms that such people would belong to Ahl al-Kitāb or the community of Christians and Jews

“And, behold, among the followers of earlier revelation (i.e., the Torah, Psalms, Gospel) there are indeed such as [truly] believe in Allah (i.e., the ‘One True God’) and in that which has been bestowed from on high upon you (i.e., this Quran) as well as in that which has been bestowed upon them (i.e., the Torah and the Gospel). Standing in awe of Allah, they do not barter away Allah’s messages for a trifling gain (hence they do not weigh what will be the consequence for them in accepting that which they recognize as Truth). They shall have their reward with their Lord-God – for, behold, Allah is swift in reckoning!”

    (Quran, Āle ‘Imrān, 3:199)

What is here truly remarkable is that Allah Most Wise has chosen to describe as Ahl al-Kitāb a people who accept the Qur’ān as the word of the ‘One True God’. The implication is that Allah Most Wise has here informed us of a people who accept of the Qur’ān as His revealed Word even while they still identify themselves as Christians and Jews. I pray with all my heart that this humble book might assist such Christians and Jews to now affirm their belief in the Qur’ān as the Word of the God of Nabī Ibrāhīm (Abraham ,)ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﻟﺴﻼ' and hence that Nabī Muhammad ( )ﺻﻠﻰ ﷲ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﺳﻠﻢ is His Prophet and Messenger (even while they may still choose to maintain their identity as Christians and Jews and follow the laws and rituals prescribed in their scriptures)

One of the reasons why such Christians and Jews respond in this way is because of their sincere attachment to their own scripture. The Qur’ān vividly describes that attachment:

“[But] they are not all alike: among the followers of earlier revelation there are upright people, who recite Allah’s revealed verses throughout the night, and prostrate themselves [before Him].”

    (Qur’ān, Āle ‘Imrān, 3:113)

The Qur’ān is even more explicit that there will be Jews and Christians who will continue to identify themselves as Jews and Christians even while some of them recognize and accept the Qur’ān to be the Word of the One God, and recognize and accept Nabī Muhammad ( )ﺻﻠﻰ ﷲ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﺳﻠﻢ to be His true Prophet. The most explicit such recognition occurs in verses 144 to 148 of Sūrah alBaqarah where the Qur’ān describes the event of the change, by Divine decree, of the Qiblah or direction to which one must turn in prayer, from Jerusalem to the Ka’aba in Makkah, for the community of believers who followed Nabī Muhammad.

“We have seen you [O Prophet] often turn your face towards heaven [for guidance]: and now We shall indeed make you turn in prayer in a direction which will fulfil your desire. Turn, then, your face towards the Inviolable House of Worship; and wherever you all may be, turn your faces towards it [in prayer]. And, surely, those who have been received revelation prior to this, know well that this [commandment] comes in truth from their Lord-God; and Allah is not unaware of what they do.”

    (Qur’ān, al-Baqarah, 2:144)

It is critically important for our discerning readers to carefully note that even after the change in Qiblah (or direction of prayer) from Jerusalem to Makkah had been proclaimed in the Qur’ān, Allah Most High continued to extend recognition to Jerusalem as the Qiblah of the Ahl al-Kitāb (i.e., Christians and Jews) and to insist that each community must turn to its own Qiblah. In other words, while the Qiblah in Jerusalem was cancelled (Mansūkh) for the Prophet ( ) ﺻﻠﻰ ﷲ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﺳﻠﻢ and his followers, it was not similarly cancelled for Christians and Jews

“And yet, even if you were to place all evidence before those who have been received earlier revelation (prior to this Qur’ān), they would not follow your direction of prayer; and neither may you follow their direction of prayer, nor even do they follow one another’s direction. And if you were to follow their errant views after all the knowledge that has come unto you, you would surely be among the evildoers.”

    (Qur’ān, al-Baqarah, 2:145)

In His Wisdom, the Lord-God chose not to write-off or dismiss those previous communities known as Ahl alKitāb (i.e., Christians and Jews) in consequence of their withholding recognition of Muhammad ( ﺻﻠﻰ ﷲ ) ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﺳﻠﻢ as His Prophet and the Qur’ān as His Word. Rather, He wisely gave them time, while urging patience, and while implicitly recognizing that they worshipped Him. He did so even while Christians worshipped Nabī ‘Īsa, i.e., Jesus ( ,)ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﻟﺴﻼ' as the son of God and the third person in a triune God.

For every community faces a direction of its own, of which He is the focal point. Vie, therefore, with one another in doing good works. Wherever you may be, Allah will gather you all unto Himself: for, verily, Allah has the power to will anything.”

    (Qur’ān, al-Baqarah, 2:148)

The Qur’ān is even more explicit on the subject of Allah, Most Wise, continuing to extend a measure of Divine recognition of the communities of Jews and Christians even while though they withhold recognition of Prophet Muhammad ( ) ﺻﻠﻰ ﷲ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﺳﻠﻢ and the Qur’ān:

“And unto you [O Prophet] have We vouchsafed this divine writ, setting forth the truth, confirming the truth of whatever there still remains of earlier revelations and determining what is true therein. Judge, then, between the followers of earlier revelation in accordance with what Allah has bestowed from on high, and do not follow their errant views, forsaking the truth that has come unto you. Unto each of you have We appointed a [different] law and way of life. And if Allah had so willed, He could surely have made you all one single community: but [He willed it otherwise] in order to test you by means of what He has vouchsafed unto, you. Vie, then, with one another in doing good works! Unto Allah you all must return; and then He will make you truly understand all that on which you were wont to differ.

    (Qur’ān, al-Māidah, 5:48)

It is in respect of their relations with such Christians and such Jews that the Qur’ān has counseled Muslims to be patient and to build strong bonds (of friendship and alliance) with them in order that success can be achieved

“O you who have attained to faith! Be patient (with such Christians and Jews), and vie with one another in showing patience (with them), and build bonds of friendship and alliance (with them) and fear Allah (in this matter) that success can be achieved!”

    (Qur’ān, Āle Imrān, 3:200)

    --------------------------

The Jews and the Christians that are condemned by the Quran are those who are evil and there are plenty Verses of the Quran that discusses them as well. However the Verse 62 of Surah Baqara refers to the Jews/Christians in the positive light and they are those whom Sheikh Imran Hosein has explained using the above Verses of the Quran. This is what I have learned, Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Alameen.

Re: Tolerance of prophet PBUH towards other religions

The only religion that is valid in the Eyes of Allah is Al-Islam. Any other religion will turn one to Hell. That is what I've learnt. and that is what I go by. Christianity won't bring you to Jannah, nor will Judaism, they both will bring one to Hellfire. Both christianity and Judaism has been corrupt and are outdated (although I'd say christianity is more corrupt than Judaism)

The only way to Allah is with Islam. Not christianity, not Judaism. Whosoever turns away from Islam, they will be losers.

Christianity and Judaism are both invalid and are not to be followed. I hope you aren't saying that Christianity or Judaism will bring one to Allah, cuz it won't. It will bring one to Hellfire. Cuz Islam is the only Valid religion now.

I am pretty sure 2:62 speaks of the previous nations, not the current Jews and christians.

And whoever seeks religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers) (3:85).

This statement by Ibn `Abbas indicates that Allah does not accept any deed or work from anyone, unless it conforms to the Law of Muhammad that is, after Allah sent Muhammad . Before that, every person who followed the guidance of his own Prophet was on the correct path, following the correct guidance and was saved.

    And for 2:62

After Allah described the condition - and punishment - of those who defy His commands, fall into His prohibitions and transgress set limits by committing prohibited acts, He stated that the earlier nations who were righteous and obedient received the rewards for their good deeds. This shall be the case, until the Day of Judgment. Therefore, whoever follows the unlettered Messenger and Prophet shall acquire eternal happiness and shall neither fear from what will happen in the future nor become sad for what has been lost in the past.

Tolerance of prophet PBUH towards other religions

Meaning of Shirk according to The Qur'an
" Worshipping anyone or anything besides Allah " or " distributing anything exclusive to Allah, to anyone or anything else "

Meaning of Tawheed according to The Qur'an
Worshipping none but Allah. Affirming whatever is exclusive to Him, Him alone.

Greetings and peace be with you all,

I like this video posted by abd il-Hakim recently, he says we may be able to judge earthly things, but only Allah can say who will achieve salvation, he makes a number of other points too.

May Allah bless you all on your journey,

And Moses chose from his people seventy men for Our appointment. And when the earthquake seized them, he said, "My Lord, if You had willed, You could have destroyed them before and me [as well]. Would You destroy us for what the foolish among us have done? This is not but Your trial by which You send astray whom You will and guide whom You will. You are our Protector, so forgive us and have mercy upon us; and You are the best of forgivers.
    [7:155]
And decree for us in this world [that which is] good and [also] in the Hereafter; indeed, we have turned back to You." [ Allah ] said, "My punishment - I afflict with it whom I will, but My mercy encompasses all things." So I will decree it [especially] for those who fear Me and give zakah and those who believe in Our verses - [7:156]
Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find written in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel, who enjoins upon them what is right and forbids them what is wrong and makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them. So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him - it is those who will be the successful. [7:157]
Say, [O Muhammad], "O mankind, indeed I am the Messenger of Allah to you all, [from Him] to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death." So believe in Allah and His Messenger, the unlettered prophet, who believes in Allah and His words, and follow him that you may be guided. [7:158]

If it was really allowed for Jew and Christians to remain on their own religion even after acknowledging the truth of Qur'an, then Allah would not have asked them to believe in the unlettered prophet (Muhammad ) and to follow him so that they may be guided.

    Allah also says:

And whoever desires other than Islam as religion - never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers. [3:85]

Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam. [3:19]

If what you say is true, then there is simply no need of Da'wah and the Prophet would not have invited any of the Jews and Christians to accept Islam and follow him. Surely, the Jews and Christians of his time were far more observant than the Jews and Christians of today.

    It comes in a Hadith,

'Umar came to the Prophet said: "We hear from the Jews narrations that impress us, do you think we should write down some of them?" The Prophet replied: "Are you all going to fall into the same chaos (amutahawwikun) in which fell the Jews and Christians? I brought it [the Religion] to you pristine and pure. If Musa were alive, he would have no alternative but to follow me!" Narrated from Jabir by al-Bayhaqi in Shu`ab al-Iman (1:200) and mursal from al-Hasan by al-Khatib in al-Jami` li Akhlaq al-Rawi

Do you really think the Jews and Christians who accept the Qur'an as truth are better than Musa ?

This explanation is so wrong. In the above Ayaat, Allah shows us the stubborn nature of those who refuse to follow the Qiblah of Prophet Muhammad . Did you not read the last part of the Ayah that says "And if you were to follow their errant views after all the knowledge that has come unto you, you would surely be among the evildoers"? Does this part of the Ayah does not make it clear to the reader that their views are errant?

It is in respect of their relations with such Christians and such Jews that the Qur’ān has counseled Muslims to be patient and to build strong bonds (of friendship and alliance) with them in order that success can be achieved
Of course Muslims are asked to be just, patient and helpful with everyone, not just Jews and Christians. Allah also says about Christians:
... and you will find the nearest of them in affection to the believers those who say, "We are Christians." That is because among them are priests and monks and because they are not arrogant. [5:82]

The Ahle Kitab are more closer, but all this does not mean that they are allowed to continue following their own rituals and belief even after knowing and believing in Qur'an.

Re: Tolerance of prophet PBUH towards other religions

The Prophet pbuh was indeed very tolerant and pragmatic in his duty of conveying the message with which he (pbuh) was sent by the Master, Ruler and Sustainer of the universe to whom we all return eventually, if he pbuh did indeed allow them to pray in the mosque i would assume that it would be out of tolerance and goodwill while entertaining the hope that he would be able to convey his message to receptive minds - and not repulsed minds, they would most likely have been praying sincerely to the creator of the heavens and the earth and their sincerity is indicated in the fact that they had travelled to see him after hearing of him - God requires people to use their reason and intellect and not to believe and reject every claim with indifference and prejudice, it wouldn't be required of us to believe five people if they all came claiming to be Jesus 2.0, but we would be required to use our God given abilities and faculties in a lawful way to investigate and then accept what we sincerely believe to be the truth with due humility to God, the najrani's are a good example of people who were submitted to God and sought to follow the truth, the Prophet pbuh's tolerance of people's doubts are another example of an understanding of the human nature and circumstances.
He pbuh was delivering the guidance to them and not encouraging them to follow a previous path which was slowly turning into kufr of Allah.

"By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, there is no-one of this Ummah, Jew or Christian, who hears of me then dies without believing in that with which I have been sent, but he will be one of the people of Hell."
    (Sahih Muslim, 153)

There is a difference between positive tolerance and encouragement to error.

The judgement of the judge in the case of 'Ali's (ra) suit of armour is an affirmation of the justice that Allah instills in man through the guidance which is Islam, it is not an encouragement to commit kufr.
The fact that the Prophet pbuh forgave the man who attempted to alert Quraish to the anticipated movement of The Muslims, after hearing the reasoning that the man provided is an example of tolerance and undsratanding of human weakness and not a green light to commit treachery.
The case where a prostitute fed water to a dog and was forgiven her past is an affirmaition of the mercy of Allah and is not an indication to a special position of dogs in Islam and nor is it an encouragement to sin.
Nor is the fact that he pbuh allowed an ignorant bedouin to finish pissing in the corner of the mosque despite the attempt of the companions to prevent him before explaining to him the error of the deed and the purpose of the mosque an indication of lawfulness of pissing in the Prophet's (pbuh) mosque. (Although praying to God sincerely in the previously practiced format is not the same as pissing - OBVIOUSLY! )
There is a difference between positive tolerance and encouragement to error.

The best example i can give is that of a man born in a jungle and raised amongst wolves, never learned to speak, never met a human being, never learned to read - the same man will still be raised on the day of judgement for questioning, and he will still need to answer for his deeds, did he use his God gifted intellect to follow the best way available to him given his circumstances or did he play the role of a degenerate, arrogant, and tyrannous fool, strangling creatures to death just for fun?

    Chapter Name:Al-Noor Verse No:64

Certainly, to Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth. Surely, He knows your condition and (He knows) the Day when they will be brought back to Him, then He will inform them of what they did. And Allah is All-Knower of everything.

Anyways, the knowledge of all that is with Allah, our job is to follow the best way according to the knowledge we receive and the efforts we make will be taken into account along with our circumstances, to be wise in delivering guidance and to try to save ourselves and others from hell.

We know some people died believing in Allah and trying to serve Him sincerely while sincerely believing that Islam is a deception, and it may happen that many Muslims will fight in different contingents of Dajjal's army, (http://www.thestandard.co.zw/2016/03...da-whats-name/ http://www.mintpressnews.com/blackwa...-yemen/216869/ http://www.middleeasteye.net/news/me...emen-764309832 ) believing in Allah and sincerely trying to serve Allah and that they will all be raised and judged according to intention and we know that every single person grows up in different circumstances, their account is with Allah who never errs nor forgets, so let's try to move forward seeking Allah's face.
We know pharaoh tried that argument with Musa and we know Musa explained it curtly.

I pray that we seek and follow the truth and that Allah guides us, we'll never finish learning while we're on earth but we can try to learn and follow according to the best of our abilities.

    Wa Alaikum Salaam Brother Serenity...

I thank you for sharing your point of view and thank you for reading mine.

I have read in the Message of the Quran - Tafsir of Allamma Asad (r.a) who comments as following on Surah Baqara Verse 62:

Verily those who have attained to faith (in this divine writ) as well as those who follow the Jewish faith, and the Christians, and the Sabians - all who believe in God and the Last day and do the righteous deeds - shall have their reward with their sustainer: no fear need they have, and neither shall they grieve.

The above passage which recurs in the Qur'an several times lays down a fundamental doctrine of Islam. With a breadth of vision unparalleled in any other religious faith, the idea of "salvation" is here made conditional upon three elements only: belief in God, belief in the Day of Judgment, and righteous action in life. The statement of this doctrine at this juncture that is, in the midst of an appeal to the children of Israel is warranted by the false Jewish belief that their descent from Abraham entitles them to be regarded as "God's chosen people"

I know that you have read those Verses which Maulana Imran has pointed towards and given his explanation and understanding. Based on what he explains and what the Quran points towards, I believe he has a valid point.

May be inshA'Allah this explanation of Allamma Asad on Surah Baqara Verse 148 would help you understand what the Maulana is trying to explain and the point that I'm trying to make.

The Quran is not inconsistent with itself. If there are Jews and Christians being spoken positively about and the ones who are condemned then how can Allah (swt) says one thing about them and say something completely different about the same people?

(2:148) for, every community faces a direction of its own, of which He is the focal point. Vie, therefore, with one another in doing good works. Wherever you may be, God will gather you all unto Himself: for, verily, God has the power to will anything.

The words "He is the focal point and doing of good works' is identical with the above mentioned in Surah Baqara Verse 62 "all who believe in God and the Last day and do the righteous deeds - shall have their reward with their sustainer: no fear need they have, and neither shall they grieve."

The Allama comments the following on the above Verse 148:

"every one has a direction...", etc. Almost all of the classical commentators, from the Companions of the Prophet downwards, interpret this as a reference to the various religious communities and their different modes of "turning towards God" in worship. Ibn Kathir, in his commentary on this verse, stresses its inner resemblance to the phrase occurring in 5:48: "unto every one of you have We appointed a [different] law and way of life". The statement that "every community faces a direction of its own" in its endeavour to express its submission to God implies, firstly, that at various times and in various circumstances man's desire to approach God in prayer has taken different forms (e.g., Abraham's choice of the Ka'bah as his qiblah. the Jewish concentration on Jerusalem, the eastward orientation of the early Christian churches, and the Qur'anic commandment relating to the Ka'bah); and, secondly, that the direction of prayer however important its symbolic significance may be does not represent the essence of faith as such: for, as the Qur'an says, "true piety does not consist in turning your faces towards the east or the west" (2:177), and, "God's is the east and the west" (2:115 and 142). Consequently, the revelation which established the Ka'bah as the qiblah of the Muslims should not be a matter of contention for people of other faiths, nor a cause of their disbelief in the truth of the Qur'anic revelation as such (Manor 11, 21 f.)

    ------

The fact that the Prophet (SallAllahu Alaihi Wassallam) allowed the Christians to pray inside the Madinah Masjid and did not condemn them also tells us that he understood that various nations follow their own way to approach God Al Mighty.

I disagree with you. Islam is the only way. Christians can not approach God by committing shirk. I am pretty sure the christians worshipped Jesus at Madinah Masjid, and thus they did NOT approach God by doing what they did.

And there is only ONE valid way to pray to God, that is what God / Allah prescribed for us. I can NOT make up my own prayers. Christians may face the Vatican, Jews, Jerusalem. But the True Direction is the Qiblah.

Christians and Jews are disbelievers for not following Islam. you can't possibly say that they are guided? They are not. Only those who follow The true religion, are. Which is Islam.

One can not save themselves by just believing in God. The Polytheists of Mecca believed in Allah too, but they were still disbelievers. One has to affirm His Oneness, follow His religion, affirm Oneness of Worship, Lordship and Attributes.

The only way to approach God is the Islamic way. Not through christianity or any other beliefs. 2:62 speaks of the previous nations, it does NOT speak of The current Jews and christians! They can not go to Jannah just by believing in God and not following Islam, by rejecting shirk.

As far as the Jews are concerning, their faith meant believing in the Tawraat (original Torah) and following the way of Moosa (peace be upon him) until ‘Eesa came, after which whoever continued to follow the Torah and the way of Moosa, and did not leave this and follow ‘Eesa, was doomed. As far as the Christians are concerned, their faith meant believing in the Injeel (original Gospel) and following the laws of ‘Eesa; whoever did this was a believer whose faith was acceptable to Allaah, until Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came, after which whoever did not follow Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and leave the way of ‘Eesa and the Injeel that he had been following before, was doomed.

    https://islamqa.info/en/2912

There is no other way to approach God, except The Islamic Way. So no, Christians can not approach God by following Jesus and not Prophet Muhammad :saw:

The Nation of Prophet Muhammad :saw: is WHOLE mankind. So The prescribed direction for us is to pray facing the Qiblah, this applies to all mankind. Facing the Qiblah, is the command of Allah, and it is for This nation, whole mankind.

So what Allah prescribed for the Jews and christians are not to be followed, and they are not valid anymore, because The Qur'an is the way for all mankind, now.

    I see it like this:

Allah ordained a way and law for EVERY nation. The Nation of Prophet Muhammad :saw: is the ONLY valid now. So for this nation, Allah ordained for us to face the Qiblah, ALL of us. So it is NOT valid for christians or Jews to face The Vatican or Jerusalem. Cuz their laws do NOT apply anymore, it is only the Laws for The Nation of Prophet Muhammad :saw: that apply now.

Allah ordained for the nation of Prophet Muhammad :saw: to face Qiblah, meaning ALL mankind. This doesn't mean that Christians can pray at the vatican, as that is not valid, and is misguidance.

I don't trust the interpretations you give.

you have wrongfully misunderstood 2:62. we can NOT go to Jannah just by believing in God, day of Judgment and doing righteous deeds. One has to follow Islam. What 2:62 says is that those who believe in The Quran, The Prophet Muhammad :saw:, Allah, and the Jews and Christians (BEFORE the Prophet Muhammad :saw they will have the reward with Allah.

As for those christians of today, they do NOT fall into 2:62.
    Allahu alam.

Tolerance of prophet PBUH towards other religions

Meaning of Shirk according to The Qur'an
" Worshipping anyone or anything besides Allah " or " distributing anything exclusive to Allah, to anyone or anything else "

Meaning of Tawheed according to The Qur'an
Worshipping none but Allah. Affirming whatever is exclusive to Him, Him alone.

Re: Tolerance of prophet PBUH towards other religions

nevermind, bro syed_z had answered this previously.

I have a verse to coincide with
3:113-115 113. "Yet, they are not all alike: of the People of the Book is a group upright (in faith). They recite the verses of Allah in the night time while they prostrate themselves (in adoration)." 114. "They believe in Allah and the last Day; and they enjoin what is right and forbid the wrong, and hasten to do good deeds, and these are of the righteous ones." 115. "And whatever good they do, they will never be denied the reward of it; and Allah knows the pious ones."

Luke 12:35-38 35 “Let your waist be girded and your lamps burning; 36 and you yourselves be like men who wait for their master, when he will return from the wedding, that when he comes and knocks they may open to him immediately. 37 Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching. Assuredly, I say to you that he will gird himself and have them sit down to eat, and will come and serve them. 38 And if he should come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.

    Asalaam O alaikum...

Allah (swt) does tell them to believe in the unlettered Prophet but Allah (swt) also understands that due to human nature and the attachment each of them have towards their own way of life, they will be judged accordingly.

“… And if Allah had so willed, He could surely have made you all one single community …”

    (Qur’ān, al-Māidah, 5:48)

Allah (swt) knows that mankind cannot be united and of absolute one mind because that is how human nature works. His mind is prone to dissent intellectually. He is used to following what he or she has been following since childhood. However that does not happen with everyone and many do break the status quo and accept Islam and become fully guided. Those who don't God will judge them according to their intentions.

If what you say is true, then there is simply no need of Da'wah and the Prophet would not have invited any of the Jews and Christians to accept Islam and follow him. Surely, the Jews and Christians of his time were far more observant than the Jews and Christians of today.

Absolutely not. Do Dawah because the Quran orders us to. And InshA'Allah Dawah will continue till the end of the world. Allah (swt) says in the Quran:

And do not argue with the followers of earlier revelation otherwise than in a most kindly manner unless it be such of them as are bent on evildoing and say: "We believe in that which has been bestowed from on high upon us as well as that which has been bestowed upon you: for our God and your God is one and the same, and it is unto Him that We [all] surrender ourselves."

    (Surah Al Ankabut Verse 46)

Where does it say by Allah (swt) after giving them Dawah to conclude that they are going to the hellfire because they choose to maintain their identity as jews and christians? And that includes all modern Jews and Christians.

I can also put that question to you as to why would you do Dawah to them because according to you the above Verse was revealed at the time of the Prophet (sallAllahu Alaihi Wassallam) so why are going to apply it in our modern times? If I was to take the methodology that the above Verse was revealed in history and has historical significance only then it means we shouldn't do Dawah to them? Right?

Maulana Imran Hosein mentions giving Dawah to them while keeping in mind that Allah (swt) has given them their own set of laws and way.

“And do believe in that which I have [now] bestowed from on high, which confirms the truth that is already with you, and be not the first of those who deny its truth …”

    (Qur’ān, al-Baqarah, 2:41)

"Finally the Qur’ān declared that the function of the new scripture was not just to confirm truth that had previously been sent down in the Torah, Psalms and Gospel, but also to guard and protect that truth so that it cannot ever be distorted or lost. The Qur’ān can, of course, perform this function since it is divinely protected and thus can never itself be changed in any way, and can never be lost. The verse continued to recognize that while Truth is one, the Divine wisdom has ordained that several separate religious communities should emerge, each with its one code of law and own spiritual path to that one truth:

To each among you have we prescribed a law and an open way. If Allah had so willed, He would have made you a single people, but (His plan is) to test you in what He hath given you: so strive as in a race in all virtues. The goal of you all is to Allah. It is He Who will show you the truth of the matters in which you dispute

    (Surah Al Maida 48)

Does this part of the Ayah does not make it clear to the reader that their views are errant?
Yes correct I agree that is an errant view. But who is it for? Allah (swt) says "And if you were to follow their errant views after all the knowledge that has come unto you" i.e. O Muslims if you were still to follow their Qiblah even though the new revelation has made it absolutely clear that the Qiblah has been changed. And so if you continue to follow their Qiblah then you would be following an errant view.

Why did He say that ? Because the Muslims were praying in the direction of Jerusalem for several months after migration of the Prophet to Madinah.

....for this was indeed a hard test for all but those whom God has guided aright.

    (Surah Al Baqara Verse 143)

The Muslims were accustomed to praying towards Jerusalem so they who were having difficulty are warned that they should NOT follow errant views and continue to wards Jerusalem rather now they should turn towards Makkah.

Nevertheless after following the above command of the transfer of Qiblah we keep in mind that:

they would not follow your direction of prayer; and neither may you follow their direction of prayer, nor even do they follow one another’s direction.

“For every community faces a direction of its own, of which He is the focal point.

The Ahle Kitab are more closer, but all this does not mean that they are allowed to continue following their own rituals and belief even after knowing and believing in Qur'an.

Yes Muslims are asked to be just according to the Quran and that methodology accepted Najashi as a man of God even though he died Christian.

Abu Hurayra narrated that the Prophet e announced to the people the death of the Negus (al-Najashi) on the same day that he died, then he came outside with them to the (open air) place of prayer and said “Allah is greatest!” four times.

    (Sahih Muslim)

Abu Hurayra narrated that the Prophet e announced to the people the death of the Negus – the leader of the Abyssinians – on the same day that he died, saying: “Ask forgiveness for your brother.” Ibn Shihab (al-Zuhri) said: “Sa`id ibn al-Musayyib also narrated to me that Abu Hurayra narrated to him that the Prophet e arranged them in rows in the place of prayer and prayed saying “Allah is greatest!” four times.

    (Sahih Muslim)

Jabir ibn `Abd Allah said that the Prophet e said: “Today one righteous servant of Allah has died: As-hama.” Jabir continued: “Then he rose and led us in prayer over him.”

Prophet called Najashi our brother even though he died Christian.

If I were to take in understanding the methodology of the Quran according to you then even Najashi is in the hellfire?

People like Najashi are still living in this world and Quran does refer to them and that is why Quran is a Miracle of our Blessed Prophet (SallAllahu Alaihi Wassallam).
