    Lightbulb What is stinginess? Can we withhold trade secrets?

    Report bad ads?

    Sahaabi رضي الله عنه asked Nabi ﷺ, “Which is the most evil action in the sight of Allah?” Nabi ﷺ replied, “Bad character and stinginess”. Stinginess does not only apply to withholding money. Generally, stinginess refers to not helping someone when you know you can.

    A person can be stingy with their knowledge, skills, understanding and wisdom. Perhaps you are skilled and talented in certain matters where your family are not. To withhold your skills is stinginess. Perhaps you are experienced in a matter where your colleagues are not. To withhold your experience, stay quiet and watch them struggle is stinginess. If someone seeks your advice but you do not share your wisdom, that too is a form of stinginess.

    For example, businessmen have trade secrets. Like a secret ingredient to a special recipe, if someone wants to know that exact secret which could put your local business at risk, it is permissible to not inform them. That is your livelihood and you are not obliged. However, if you run a successful bakery and another person in town wants to open one too. If they approach you for tips, queries about the type of oven or baking tools they should buy, your experience and knowledge can help them save money. You have been through the struggles of opening a business, your help would be invaluable. To withhold it, is stinginess.

    Eventually they will learn, why not help them from the beginning? Do not see other businesses as competitors who will empty your pockets, see them as opportunities to earn the currency of the hereafter. We all start from square one, we were all once amateurs. Help people work their way up and Allah will help you in your work. To reject them is to be stingy and to be stingy is disliked by Allah. May Allah save us from His displeasure, aameen.

    — Hazrat Ml. Dawood Seedat حفظه الله

    Re: What is stinginess? Can we withhold trade secrets?

    No, business secrets do not come under stinginess. Giving your secret recipe is not generosity. It is foolishness and is not required by the religion.

    It would be stinginess if you didn't give your special soup to a poor person. It is not stinginess if you don't give your special soup recipe to others. Other people don't need to know your trade secrets.

    And yes, other knowledge should be shared and done freely so. Because there is no reason why you shouldn't give it and it usually doesn't take much to give a tip. In addition, doing so certainly increases the blessings one has in life.

    Re: What is stinginess? Can we withhold trade secrets?

    If giving away your trade secret does not effect you or your business then this could very well be stingy.

    I think what you are referring to is miserliness. Stinginess and miserliness do tend to co-exist, but stinginess has hatered for any good involved in it.

    Re: What is stinginess? Can we withhold trade secrets?

    But you would need to make absolutely clear that it is a lawful and commonly non-repulsive ingredient, and that you are witholding information on it as a trade secret.If you are offering it to an individual, it's unlawful to attempt to coerce or trick them into consuming something they wouldn't like to consume.Vimto and Rooh Afza - i expect them to not add haram or non-repulsive ingredients and it is binding upon them to provide such information to trustworthy and non-corrupt authorities - and they will be safe as long as they are not going against the spirit of Allah

    Barakalahu feek I think the term "the spirit of Allah" is incorrect, and perhaps a better way to say it would be the spirit of islam.

    Islam gets it's validation from the spirit of Allah, that is why human beings must practice discretion at all times with taqwa of Allah in mind, that is why Maryam was sent to Banee Israa-eel and they were unable to stone her despite the volumes of written laws commanding punishment.

    This does not invalidate Islam - but fulfills it - giving priority to the will of Allah over the letter.

    Please research " letter vs spirit "

    Both letter and spirit were distilled into the individual for a very good and necessary valid reason - and that is so that the corrupt could not abuse the letter to overcome the spirit.

    The letter is a guideline to the plumbline of the spirit.

    Islam means "submission to Allah and attainment of peace thereby", and if that is what is meant by your statement, then it is correct.

    ----

    The letter of the law versus the spirit of the law is an idiomatic antithesis. When one obeys the letter of the law but not the spirit, one is obeying the literal interpretation of the words (the "letter") of the law, but not necessarily the intent of those who wrote the law. Conversely, when one obeys the spirit of the law but not the letter, one is doing what the authors of the law intended, though not necessarily adhering to the literal wording.

    "Law" originally referred to legislative statute, but in the idiom may refer to any kind of rule. Intentionally following the letter of the law but not the spirit may be accomplished through exploiting technicalities, loopholes, and ambiguous language.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lett...rit_of_the_law

    This is how Allah condemns those who give spirit to laws whilst assuming the spirit of Allah to be dead in their hearts and minds:

    10Hear the word of the Lord,
    you rulers of Sodom;
    listen to the instruction of our God,
    you people of Gomorrah!
    11“The multitude of your sacrifices—
    what are they to me?” says the Lord.
    “I have more than enough of burnt offerings,
    of rams and the fat of fattened animals;
    I have no pleasure
    in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.
    12When you come to appear before me,
    who has asked this of you,
    this trampling of my courts?
    13Stop bringing meaningless offerings!
    Your incense is detestable to me.
    New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations—
    I cannot bear your worthless assemblies.
    14Your New Moon feasts and your appointed festivals
    I hate with all my being.
    They have become a burden to me;
    I am weary of bearing them.
    15When you spread out your hands in prayer,
    I hide my eyes from you;
    even when you offer many prayers,
    I am not listening.
    Your hands are full of blood!
    16Wash and make yourselves clean.
    Take your evil deeds out of my sight;
    stop doing wrong.
    17Learn to do right; seek justice.
    Defend the oppressed.a
    Take up the cause of the fatherless;
    plead the case of the widow.
    18“Come now, let us settle the matter,”
    says the Lord.
    “Though your sins are like scarlet,
    they shall be as white as snow;
    though they are red as crimson,
    they shall be like wool.
    19If you are willing and obedient,
    you will eat the good things of the land;
    20but if you resist and rebel,
    you will be devoured by the sword.”
    For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
    21See how the faithful city
    has become a prostitute!
    She once was full of justice;
    righteousness used to dwell in her—
    but now murderers!
    22Your silver has become dross,
    your choice wine is diluted with water.
    23Your rulers are rebels,
    partners with thieves;
    they all love bribes
    and chase after gifts.
    They do not defend the cause of the fatherless;
    the widow’s case does not come before them.
    24Therefore the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
    the Mighty One of Israel, declares:
    “Ah! I will vent my wrath on my foes
    and avenge myself on my enemies.
    25I will turn my hand against you;b
    I will thoroughly purge away your dross
    and remove all your impurities.
    26I will restore your leaders as in days of old,
    your rulers as at the beginning.
    Afterward you will be called
    the City of Righteousness,
    the Faithful City.”
    27Zion will be delivered with justice,
    her penitent ones with righteousness.
    28But rebels and sinners will both be broken,
    and those who forsake the Lord will perish.
    29“You will be ashamed because of the sacred oaks
    in which you have delighted;
    you will be disgraced because of the gardens
    that you have chosen.
    30You will be like an oak with fading leaves,
    like a garden without water.
    31The mighty man will become tinder
    and his work a spark;
    both will burn together,
    with no one to quench the fire.”

    From Isaiah Chapter 1

    And this is how He rejects the hollow statements of hypocrites:

    1. When the Hypocrites come to thee, they say, “We bear witness that thou art indeed the Messenger of Allah.”

    Yea, Allah knoweth that thou art indeed His Messenger

    and Allah beareth witness that the Hypocrites are indeed liars.

    2. They have made their oaths a screen (for their misdeeds): thus they obstruct (men) from the Path of Allah. truly evil are their deeds.
    3. That is because they believed, then they rejected Faith: So a seal was set on their hearts: therefore they understand not.
    4. When thou lookest at them, their exteriors please thee; and when they speak, thou listenest to their words. They are as (worthless as hollow) pieces of timber propped up, (unable to stand on their own). They think that every cry is against them. They are the enemies; so beware of them. The curse of Allah be on them! How are they deluded (away from the Truth)!
    5. And when it is said to them, “Come, the Messenger of Allah will pray for your forgiveness”, they turn aside their heads, and thou wouldst see them turning away their faces in arrogance.
    6. It is equal to them whether thou pray for their forgiveness or not. Allah will not forgive them. Truly Allah guides not rebellious transgressors.

    From Quran Chapter 63 Al Munaafiqoon. The Hypocrites.

    Barakalahu feek. I appreciate your attempt to help me understand, but I urge you to reconsider your stance. I am sure you can let go of a small a pitiful word, and avoid many issues. We muslims do not need to delve into such matters, but rather we need to focus on fearing Allah and following the path of the righteous predecessors. The correct aqeedah of the companions and the salaf al Saleh does not allow for one to call Allah except by that which was legislated. Moreover It is not recommended for the regular layman to read the Bible as much. It is only done so when it is necessary, for reasons of refutation, and even then it should only be done by scholars and grounded students of knowledge.

    Fas aloo ahl ad-dhikr in kuntum laa ta'lamoon.
    Ask those who have the reminder if you know not.

    It is a fact that the Prophet would gather and consult the learned and wise of his companions and also the believing Muslims who were learned in the previously revealed kitaab if he needed more information on a topic and would wait for revelation after having exhausted his means within ability - unless it was forthcoming by Allah's decree.
    Please use your God given intellect and study in order to realise that the Kitaab sent to the people before revelations to Muhammad in Makkah is not only there for refutation, it is only the interpolated lies that are refuted.

    I hope you agree that it is the absolute height of insolent&/ignorant folly to claim that the statement 2+2=4 ought to be refuted out of 'asabiyyah al jaahiliyyah. That indeed is insecure stinginess.

    Again - Islam means "submission to Allah and attainment of peace thereby", and if that is what is meant by your statement, then it is correct - and i accept wholeheartedly.

    Ask those who have the reminder if you know not.

    It is a fact that the Prophet would gather and consult the learned from the people of the kitaab if he needed more information on a topic and would wait for revelation after having exhausted his means within ability - please use your God given intellect and study in order to realise that the kitaab sent to the people before revelations to Muhammad in Makkah is not only there for refutation, it is only the interpolated lies that are refuted.

    It is the absolute height of insolent&/ignorant folly to claim that the statement 2+2=4 ought to be refuted out of 'asabiyyah al jaahiliyyah.
    You seem to not have understood me Barakalahu feek. I said that you can read the Bible for necessary reasons, and that the layman should not be reading it as such.

    I never said that the book was there only for refutation, and yes the book sent before the final revelation was a source of guidance, but ever since we have received the final revelation we are not allowed to delve into the book, because we have the Quran wa lilah al hamd.

    Barakalhufeek the Bible is not 2+2=4, if that is what you believe then you are a christian kafir, because that is like saying the Bible is perfect and without issues.

    You first Told me I need to ask the people of knowledge if I don't know, and then you tell me that I am ignorant fool, because I claimed that refuting the Bible is to be done by scholars.

    You need to fear Allah, and stop speaking without knowledge before you start leading people astray with your innovated ideas.

    It was narrated from Jaabir ibn ‘Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) with some written material he had got from one of the people of the Book. He read it to the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), and he got angry and said: “Are you confused (about your religion), O son of al-Khattaab? By the One in Whose hand is my soul, I have brought it (the message of Islam) to you clear and pure. Do not ask them about anything, lest they tell you something true and you disbelieve it, or they tell you something false and you believe it. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if Moosa were alive, he would have no option but to follow me.”

    Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Because the Qur’an is the best of speech, they were prohibited to follow anything else. Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):“Is it not sufficient for them that We have sent down to you the Book (the Quran) which is recited to them? Verily, herein is mercy and a reminder (or an admonition) for a people who believe”[al-‘Ankaboot 29:51].

    An-Nasaa’i and others narrated from the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) that he saw a page of the Torah in the hand of ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: “If Moosa were alive, and you were to follow him and leave me, you would go astray.” According to another report: “… he would have no option but to follow me.” According to another version: The face of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) changed when ‘Umar showed that to him, and one of the Ansaar said to him: O son of al-Khattaab, do you not see the face of the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)? ‘Umar said: I am content with Allah as my Lord, Islam is my religion, and Muhammad as my Prophet. Hence the Sahaabah forbade the study of any book other than the Qur’an.End quote from Majmoo‘ al-Fataawa (17/41-42)

    I will ignore your provocative insults and inform you of the record which i will post in edit that the Prophet made sure to inform the people that it was allowed, and that he had done so when 'Umar attempted to read contradictory knowledge before being grounded in the complete truth.

    Edit:

    Saheeh Bukhari
    Volume 4, Book 56, Number 667

    Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr:
    The Prophet said, "Convey (my teachings) to the people even if it were a single sentence, and tell others the stories of Bani Israel (which have been taught to you), for it is not sinful to do so. And whoever tells a lie on me intentionally, will surely take his place in the (Hell) Fire."

    Sunan Abu Dawud
    Book 25, Number 3654

    Narrated AbuHurayrah:
    The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: relate traditions from the children of Isra'il; there is no harm.
    Book 25, Number 3655
    Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As:
    The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) used to relate to us traditions from the children of Isra'il till morning came; he would not get up except for obligatory prayer.

    When Allah instructs us:

    Wadhkur fi al Kitaab Younus /Ayyoub etc

    One who knows the scripture and uses intelligence becomes aware from the conciseness of the Quranic references that the Prophet is being instructed to refer to the available stories.
    Then when one goes to those stories - he/she gets a narration to refer to, and these are not usually the type of story where the word "Israel" has been put in place of the real name of a place or people promised good, or where "Israel" has been removed from a place where a place or people are promised wrath.

    See the detailed yet short story of Jonah yourself if uncertain.

    Anyways, the false accusations that you made above are easy to sift and see through and absolutely unnecessary for me to refute other than with a smile

    edit: i just read the statement again and saw that it was fair and just.

    I have not insulted you in the least, and lying is also a sin may Allah guide you.

    I believe I have posted sufficient evidence to prove that your claim has no basis. It was obviously not allowed, and is still not allowed.

    Fear allah, and stop wasting endless hours on this website speaking without knowledge, because that is a grave sin barakalahufeek.

    “And follow not (O man, i.e., say not, or do not, or witness not) that of which you have no knowledge. Verily, the hearing, and the sight, and the heart of each of those ones will be questioned (by Allâh)”[al-Israa’ 17:36]

    It appears that you want me to say "Islam" without context for the sake of inciting shiqaaq, i ended up randomly opening on surah Suaad ch.38 after 'Asr prayer and was reminded of the crooked methodology of the corrupt leaders of infidelity and corruption.

    1. Sad: By the Qur’an, Full of Admonition: (This is the Truth).
    2. But the Unbelievers (are steeped) in self-glory and Separatism.
    3. How many generations before them did We destroy? In the end they cried (for mercy)- when there was no longer time for being saved!
    4. So they wonder that a Warner has come to them from among themselves! and the Unbelievers say, “This is a sorcerer telling lies!
    5. “Has he made the gods (all) into One God. Truly this is a wonderful thing!”
    6. And the leaders among them go away (impatiently), (saying), “Walk ye away, and remain constant to your gods! For this is truly a thing designed (against you)!
    7. “We never heard (the like) of this among the people of these latter days: this is nothing but a made-up tale!”
    8. “What! has the Message been sent to him – (Of all persons) among us?”…but they are in doubt concerning My (Own) Message! Nay, they have not yet tasted My Punishment!
    9. Or have they the treasures of the mercy of thy Lord,- the Exalted in Power, the Grantor of Bounties without measure?
    10. Or have they the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all between? If so, let them mount up with the ropes and means (to reach that end)!
    11. But there – will be put to flight even a host of confederates.
    12. Before them (were many who) rejected apostles,- the people of Noah, and ‘Ad, and Pharaoh, the Lord of Stakes,
    13. And Thamud, and the people of Lut, and the Companions of the Wood; – such were the Confederates.
    14. Not one (of them) but rejected the apostles, but My punishment came justly and inevitably (on them).
    15. These (today) only wait for a single mighty Blast, which (when it comes) will brook no delay.
    16. They say: “Our Lord! hasten to us our sentence (even) before the Day of Account!”
    17. Have patience at what they say, and remember our servant David, the man of strength: for he ever turned (to Allah..
    18. It was We that made the hills declare, in unison with him, Our Praises, at eventide and at break of day,
    19. And the birds gathered (in assemblies): all with him did turn (to Allah..
    20. We strengthened his kingdom, and gave him wisdom and sound judgment in speech and decision.

    From Quran Chapter 38.

    قُلْ مَن كَانَ عَدُوًّا لِّجِبْرِيلَ فَإِنَّهُ نَزَّلَهُ عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ وَهُدًى وَبُشْرَىٰ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

    M. M. Pickthall
    Say (O Muhammad, to mankind): Who is an enemy to Gabriel! For he it is who hath revealed (this Scripture) to thy heart by Allah's leave, confirming that which was (revealed) before it, and a guidance and glad tidings to believers;

    Yusuf Ali (Saudi Rev. 1985)
    Say: Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel-for he brings down the (revelation) to thy heart by Allah's will, a confirmation of what went before, and guidance and glad tidings for those who believe,-

    مَن كَانَ عَدُوًّا لِّلَّهِ وَمَلَائِكَتِهِ وَرُسُلِهِ وَجِبْرِيلَ وَمِيكَالَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَدُوٌّ لِّلْكَافِرِينَ

    M. M. Pickthall
    Who is an enemy to Allah, and His angels and His messengers, and Gabriel and Michael! Then, lo! Allah (Himself) is an enemy to the disbelievers.

    Yusuf Ali (Saudi Rev. 1985)
    Whoever is an enemy to Allah and His angels and messengers, to Gabriel and Michael,- Lo! Allah is an enemy to those who reject Faith.
