Lightbulb Our faith in the unseen and the harms of spiritual illnesses

When a physical illness effects our body, we see it and feel it, thereby giving it its due attention. When a spiritual illness effects our hearts, we cannot see it or physically feel it. Unfortunately, this can lead to us disregarding our spiritual illnesses as minor. For example, there was a function in which some of the invitees informed the host, that they do not partake of meat that is not slaughtered 100% according to the Shariah. They enquired about how the meat would be prepared, politely offering to arrange their own food if there was any doubt.

In this scenario, some people get offended by this question and remark; Why are you making such a big story out of meat? Now change the scenario. If a person was invited for lunch but he suffers from health conditions. This leads to him enquiring about the food before attending so that if it happens to be unsuitable, he can bring his own food. In this situation, his needs are catered for because it is understood that this man has a sickness. A physical sickness. His cautiousness is respected. Yet for the ones who are cautious in deen and request halal food, their needs are misunderstood, considered offensive and taken lightly.

A person who suffers a robbery will immediately enforce stricter security measures to prevent another robbery. That is because he sees the loss in his wealth. However, backbiting results in a loss of rewards which is far worse but since we do not see it, we overlook it and continue anyway. If a cat urinated in our homes we would go berserk, send the cat outside and ensure that it never happens again. Nabi ﷺ informed us that Shaytaan urinates in the ears of the one who misses Fajr Salah. Yet some people worry little about it, sleeping comfortably through Fajr on regular basis. They cannot see or feel the urine, so it is disregarded.

Thus, when our faith in the unseen lacks it becomes easy to trivialise Deen. We may not even realise we do it but it can happen, it is harmful and it needs to be avoided by regularly reflecting over the truth in Allah’s words and promises. Your faith in Him and the unseen should be stronger than your faith in the seen, may Allah make it so, Aameen.

I know the examples are in relation with Taqwa generally and not limited by themselves, however wanted to point out given today circumstances and situations know that there are some people who will eat meat. They do not deny that it's halal but question how it was raised, the injection of additional hormones to increase growth, how the animal is kept whether in an uncomfortable enclosed surroundings or treated by it's owner cruelly. Some, state that it is unhealthy and harmful to consume such meat, even if it slaughtered in a halal manner. Yet, it's not always practical to investigate a producer, at the otherhand, some of us tried rearing our own animals but thereafter never felt comfortable to partake of it (although it was well-fed, roamed freely, sheltered accordingly etc). What I have been taught was to have the right intentions, pursue the right means to achieve the goal/s desired. Amongst the means, circumstances and situations there are various leniency whilst the encouragement is always to attain the highest possible level with the minimal level being given.
