Is it true that if one feels sorry for your sin (or intended sin) you are forgiven by Allah, or will it eventually just be a case of accounting - good versus bad deeds? Please explain to me how forgiveness works and salvation is obtained.
If you intended to do a sin, but you never did it for Allah's sake, then you get 1 reward.
If you did a sin, and you feel guilty about it, and you ask Allah for forgiveness, He will forgive you and change your bad deed into a good deed.
If you die as a believer, and did not repent to Allah in this life - then it will be a judgement of good vs bad deeds, although Allah may punish or reward the person. But in the end, the believer will enter paradise.
However, if someone sinned in this life and died as a disbeliever, then they will not be successful, their deeds will be wasted (because they were not done for Allah's pleasure so why should He reward them?) and will be destined to hell.

In other words, if you are of the Muslim faith, you get into heaven, whether you live a decent life or not (no repenting of sin)? Or is it more accurate to say that you are unsure whether you go to heaven as it is all in the hands of Allah? What is your position now - if you died today? Can you be sure as a Muslim?
A muslim may be punished in hell due to his sins, ie if he never repented, or his repentance wasnt accepted ie he might not have been regretful or sincere.
We dont know our end so we have a balance of love, hope and fear.

My friend, it would seem that we now have different perspectives from different people.
We all want to believe that our sins have been forgiven. In Christianity we have promises that we rely on. As God cannot lie, we can accept these promises with confidence. 1Jn 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
There is no place for justification by works but only the grace of God. If we rely on our works we can become boastful and arrogant and make God our debtor - we may think he owes us salvation.
Rom 3:27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.
Rom 4:4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
As a Christian, I realise that I am totally incapable of living a pure and totally holy life and thus deserve punishment. I am therefore so thankful that in his great mercy and grace He has chosen me to inherit eternal life. Grace is unmerited favour and that is exactly what I receive.
As a real Christian you will become a new person that does good works but out of gratitude and a new heart and not to justify your acceptance before God.2Co 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

The angels of Mercy and the angels of Punishment disputed with one another [in regard to his case]. The angels of Mercy said, ‘He came to us repentant, advancing with his heart towards Allah.’ The angels of Punishment said, ‘Indeed, he never performed any good deeds.’ Then an angel came in the form of a human being, and both groups of angels asked him to be the judge between them. He said, ‘Measure the distance between the two lands. Whichever land he is closer to is the land that he is closer to [in terms of being of its people]. They then measured the distance and found that he was closer to the land that he was heading towards, and so it was the angels of Mercy who then took his soul.”

Sister, the wording of this is totally wrong. When you ask Allah for forgiveness, you shouldn't say InshaAllah. YOu should have firm conviction in your heart that He WILL forgive your sins. So you should say "May Allah forgive our sins, Ameen." InshaAllah should not be used in this context.
