black Henna - Is it Haram?

    Report bad ads?

    Asalamu Alaikum

I've been a member of this forum for quite some time, but never really did much here. I recently had a question that I thought I would pose to the community here and see if I could get some help with an answer.

I am a henna artist. I do henna for Muslims and Non Muslims alike. When it comes to doing Bridal Henna for Muslim sisters, I am constantly having to tell them 'no' to black henna. If you don't know what black henna is, well it isn't henna at all. Its black hair dye that may be added to henna powder (or not) that some people use to stain their skin. The problem is, is that it is very dangerous and can cause permanent scaring and other severe health complications. The reason why some of the brides want it, is because they are sisters with darker skin and where they come from 'everyone does it'.

I recently had a meeting with a bride that even knew of someone that had been scarred for life by it, but still wanted black henna. I tried every way I could to convince her that it was very bad to do. I flat out said I would never use it. I even went as far as to say that Islamically it could be considered haram because if we know it could permanently scar us and we still use it, it is putting ourselves in harms way. It would be like pouring acid on yourself.

So, my question is (after that long winded, disjointed rant), do you think that there would be a case to say that using 'black henna' is haram?

Re: black Henna - Is it Haram?

    Salam Alaykum
Hmmm I know that dying the hair black is haram (even if you are using black henna to do it or not)
but using black henna for hands idk you are right it is very bad to use on your skin but
Dont tell them that it is haram if you are not sure because that would be sinning.
I think that maybe you should ask a scholar about it if they are still wanting the black henna on them even after you have told them no or just do away completely with applying it (black henna) and stick firm with that decision.

MashaAllah my dear sis. Welcome to the forums! I adore you girl! How many people would think of putting others safety first?! It is hair dye that is use in black henna, therefore you are absolutely right to be concerned. Permanent hair dye has been shown/linked to cause cancer of the bladder. So that one should be avoided. It's common sense for muslims to avoid the harmful, as Allah and His Rasul (saw) have prohibited us from eating/drinking and using harmful things. But if you do find a dye that's free of harmful chemicals but may cause an allergic reaction, then the only way is to do a 24 hour patch test on the person, before agreeing to use it. May Allah reward you for being so conscientious of your actions. Ameen.

Re: black Henna - Is it Haram?

Salaams, I've recently discovered a type of henna that is sold in my town and also online (I bought some off Amazon too) - its black henna but it doesn't contain any chemicals or PHD. If you are interested in purchasing some for your clients or to simply have a look at the product, search up 'Golecha black henna' on Amazon. It's the one thats sold with 3 cones in total and the ingredients include ' aqua/henna leaves paste/glycerine/clove oil/eucalyptus oil' - I thought i'd bring it up as you did mention that you have quite a few clients that like black mehndi so I believe this is a good option if you are okay with trying it out.. hope it helps, Jzk
