فاما الزبد فيذهب جفاء و اما ما ينفع الناس فيمكث في الارض

“As for the debris (falsehood) it disappears in vain. As for the thing that benefits man (truth) they remain on earth.”

The existence of a believer should be a means of benefit to others. As the Hadith of bukhari states, Rasulullah صلي الله عليه و سلم said the example of a believer is like the date palm. Every part of it is a means of benefit; it’s fruit, it’s leaves, it’s trunk, it’s branch.

In another Hadith Rasulullah said whilst giving advice, try to assist someone, aid someone. The sahabi said what if I can’t? Rasulullah SAW replied, don’t hurt anyone, jannah will be yours.

The prophet said,
المسلم من سلم المسلمون من لسانه و يده

“A true Muslim is one from whose tongue and hands the other Muslims are secure.” (Bukhari)

Few anecdotes from the lives of the pious:

Hazrat Umar RA said once I came to know that their was an old lady who was weak by vision and also feeble. I thought I should go and assist her. I decided to go after fajr. Upon reaching I saw that all the house chores were complete; house swept, water put in place, dishes washed. I asked her who did it? She said she doesn’t know (because of her weak vision) and someone comes daily to do it. Umar RA decided to go the next day earlier. He went before fajr and saw the same. Third day he decided to go earlier and hide behind some trees to see who is the hero. He went, hid, to his amazement he saw a man taking off his shoes (ikhlas) and entering the house. After sometime the man came out, Umar approached him and grabbed him from the back to see who is this legend. To his amazement it was the great Khalifa Abubaker As-Siddique RA.

On one occasion Umar RA said:

و الله ما سابقت ابا بكر الا خير قط الا سبقني اليه

“By Allah! I haven’t competed with abubaker RA in executing a duty except that he has surpassed me.”

Mufti Taqi Sb DB says that my father, Mufti Shafie Sb RA, once fell ill in Ramadhan. After Eid, I approached him and said, “O father! Maybe you were making Dua to die in Ramadhan?” Hazrat replied, “Taqi Mian! I was making Dua that Allah grants me life till shawwal.” Mufti taqi Sb asked why would you make such a Dua, because passing away in Ramadhan is of great merit. Hazrat replied, “O my son! If I die I Ramadhan, then my family’s Eid would be ruined and instead of rejoicing they would spend their Eid in grief.” Allahu Akbar.

The great Hatim Al-Asam RA; his name was Abu Abdur Rahman Hatim, he was from Khurasan. Once a lady came in purdah to ask him a question. When she asked the query, she passed wind. Hatim asked her to repeat the question. When she repeated it, he said say it again. This continued few times till he answered. After she went, the students asked that how come you kept asking her to repeat the question, it seems that you have a hearing problem. He replied in the affirmative. After that day, whenever someone spoke to him, he would say speak louder because I can’t hear properly. His family, students were disturbed that how come all of a sudden Hazrat has a hearing problem. This continued for several years. One day, whilst teaching a student asked him a question, he immediately replied and started to act normal. Students were rejoicing that our teacher has recovered from his hearing problem. He said, I’m only telling you to teach you a lesson: He said, “You know that lady who came with a query and she passed wind, I deliberately acted deaf so that her heart doesn’t feel hurt (he acted deaf even with his family). Today after 10 years I found out that she passed away so I decided to return to my normal condition.” After that day he was given the title “Al-Asam” the deaf one.
