A kafir is a disbeliver, a person who deny's the existence of Allah s.w.a, his angels, books, life after death...etc

To call a muslim a kafir is wrong. Allah s.w.a knows best but some hadiths do compare a bad muslim with a kafir if he/she committs sins. And yes all disbelivers (except for infants :rose will go to hell, Allah s.w.a knows best

    Re: the word kafir !!!!

In The Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

“Disbelief or (Kufr) is the opposite or antonym of belief. Belief or (Iman) is a hearty act with consists of believing in the Existence of Allah, His Oneness, and His absolute right to be the only one worshiped and obeyed. When this belief exists, it results in an Islamic conduct in accordance with the Divine Law.

In the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, we are taught that it is natural that a Muslim may commit a sin. It is also well-known that sins are of different types, major, minor and the rest of sins are in between.

In the past and still in the present, some Muslims regard a Muslim who commits a major sin as Kafir. This was the opinion of the Kharijites. However the Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama`ah believe that a person who commits a major sin is Fasiq or sinful unless he deems it Halal or lawful.

But if he committed it saying that he knows it is Haram but he is forced to do so because of some reason he is not Kafir as he does not deem it Halal to do so. But if he commits the major crime claiming that it is Halal and that Allah did not forbid it then he is Kafir.

If a muslim has sins on the day of judgement; Allaah Almighty can choose to forgive that person, or that person will go to hell till they are purified of the sins [till they have had their punishment] for the sins they have commited.

After this - they will go to jannah insha'Allaah.

There are different kinds of kufr.

A sinful Muslim is considered a fasiq (sinner), not a kafir, but because you mentioned the fact that they don't pray there is some difference of opinion. Someone who abandons prayer is said by some scholars to be a kafir, while others state he is a major sinner.
one more thing ... bout people who never heard of somehting called islam .. or heard about it ,but never got to know it .. do they go to hell ?
No. This was discussed in many many other threads:

Allah swt tells us in the Qur'an that He does not punish until He sends a warner.
i think alot of people around the world hear the word islam and muslim thru the media or wtever .. and they die without knwin what its about ... do you think allaah will punish them for not seekin the truth ?
Allah swt will judge them according to their individual circumstances. It is not for us to decide their fate.

    Re: the word kafir !!!!

I've heard this in the lecture by imam anwar al-awlaki (its in the link i posted above.)

A believer will get tested and tried throughout their life because these trials and tribulations will be the reason for the expiation (getting rid) of their sins.

If the believers sins are not forgiven in this life (maybe due to excessive sinning) then they will go through the pain of death, and this pain may also be an expiation for their sins.

If they still have sins, then they will be put through the torment of the grave.

If they still have sins, the terror of the day of judgement may be an expiation for their sins.

If they still have sins after all this, they may be thrown into the hellfire until their sins are ridden of completely.

The reason why a person has to go through all these trials is because no-one can enter paradise unless they are pure of sins.

From the situations above, the more sins a person has - the harder the trial/torment will get

(i.e. the torment of the grave will be worser than the punishments in this life, and the terror of the day of judgement will be worser than the punishment of the grave etc. each is tougher than the other, that is the reason muslims have the most trials in this world [like you might see around the world right now.] because Allaah wants to remove the hardships for the believers in the hereafter.)

But its really important to ask for forgiveness, because if a person does this sincerely, Allaah Almighty might forgive their sins before the person actuallly gets the punishment, insha'Allaah:

Say: "O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: for Allah forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
    (Qur'an 39:53)

Allaahu ta'aala a'lam. (Allaah Almighty knows best.)

jazak Allaah khayr. Prophets don't get any punishment in the grave because their sinless anyway, so if somone doesn't have sin - why would they get punished?

    Re: the word kafir !!!!

First of all, you have to realise that prophets can make mistakes/errors, and they don't commit major sins at all.

The situation of the prophets is that if a prophet makes a mistake - Allaah Almighty corrects their mistake within their life (either through revelation, or by making the prophet realise the mistake) so the prophet can correct that error.

This means that Allaah Almighty doesn't leave that mistake alone, and the prophet realises that they have to correct it, and your example of when our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) turned away from the blind man is a good example, because just when the situation had happened, Allaah Almighty revealed the ayah/verse:

    He frowned and turned away

Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting).

    Surah Abasa [chapter 80 in the Qur'an verses 1 & 2]

    That example shows that Allaah Almighty corrected the mistake through revelation, just when the situation happened. And it was not a sin;

(Of him you are neglectful and divert your attention to another.) meaning, `you are too busy.' Here Allah commands His Messenger to not single anyone out with the warning. Rather, he should equal warn the noble and the weak, the poor and the rich, the master and the slave, the men and the women, the young and the old. Then Allah will guide whomever He chooses to a path that is straight. He has the profound wisdom and the decisive proof.

It was only a command and a reminder, and it was an example to the believers that we should give da'wah (call to) islam to all sorts of people, no matter what status they may have etc.

You can read more about that from this link insha'Allaah:
    http://www.tafsir.com/default.asp?sid=80&tid=57057

    ---

You can read abit more about the story of Adam (alayhi Salaam) off the following link insha'Allaah, to get a better understanding insha'Allaah.

    http://www.islamicboard.com/prophets...phet-adam.html

The main point is, that Allaah Almighty will correct the mistakes of the prophets in this life - so they leave this world without any sins, and with a perfect ending so the prophets can be an example for all of mankind.

Allaahu ta'aala a'lam. (Allaah Almighty knows best.)
