Fitan Cause One's Intellect to Depart

    Report bad ads?

From a brother on another forum:

I recently got a copy of Hamud at-Tuwayjri's 'Ittihaf al-Jama'ah,' which is a 3-volume book collecting narrations on various topics regarding the signs of the Day of Judgement.

One of the first chapters in the book (p. 23-24) is an interesting one. So, I'll share it here:

Chapter: Trials (Fitan) Cause One's Intellect to Depart

    1 -
    From Hudhayfah, who said:

"Alcohol is no better at causing one's intellect and rationality to depart than fitan are."

This was reported by Ibn Abi Shaybah, as well as Abu Nu'aym, in 'Hilyat al-Awliya'.'

    2 - He also said:

"There will be a fitnah in which the intellect of men will be distorted, to the point that you will hardly see a man who is thinking rationally."

This was reported by Nu'aym bin Hammad in 'al-Fitan,' and in 'Kunz al-'Ummal,' it is declared to be sahih.

    3 - He also said:

"There will be a fitnah, after which there will be a jama'ah. Then, there will be another jama'ah, after which there will be another fitnah, after which there will be no jama'ah. Voices will be raised, the eyes will stare in horror, and intellect will depart, to the point that you would not see a single rational person."

    This was narrated by ad-Daylami.

4 - Also, it was narrated that Ibn Mas'ud said:

"I fear for you a fitnah that is like the night, in which a man's heart will die just as his body dies."

This was narrated by Nu'aym bin Hammad in 'al-Fitan.'

Re: Fitan Cause One's Intellect to Depart

Fitnah is like a trial or tribulation, what's going on in the muslim world today is a big fitnah aswell.

The word Fitnah comes from the root word: Fataan, and that's the job of the blacksmiths [the ones who heat metal.] What the blacksmiths do is that they get metals, and they burn them at a really high temperature, and then they separate between the good part of the metal (like gold for example) and the bad (like the waste metal.)

The same way Allaah tests us through trials, and then this test distinguishes between the true believers who have strong faith in Allaah [and their like the gold metal - precious] - whereas the waste metal is like the people who pretended to be believers, and never really placed their trust in Allaah, so they failed the test/trial/fitnah they went through.

    Allaah says in the Qur'an:

    Alif. Lam. Mim.

Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, "We believe", and that they will not be tested?

We did test those before them, and Allah will certainly know those who are true from those who are false.

    [Qur'an Surah Ankaboot (The Spider) 29: 1-3]

Do you understand? And Allaah knows best.

Actually this is the point where I am confused. Why does Allah need to test ??Doesn't He know every thing already??

Yes, but we don't know. If none of us were given this life and some were punished while others rewarded, without seeing our own actions in this life - then we would ask why? Allaah could simply say that He knows.

But the reality is - we see our own actions and deeds in this life, and then we'll either be rewarded or punished according to them and our belief in Allaah, His Messengers' etc. And this life is a proof for or against us, and we can't argue against that since we will see our actions infront of our own eyes etc.

    And Allaah knows best.

    Here a Qurani Aya:
    وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ فَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ الْكَاذِبِينَ﴿29:3﴾
(29:3) The fact is that we have put to test all those who have gone before them *2 . Surely, Allah has to see *3 who are the truthful and who the liars.
This Aya says (as I can understand but might be wrong),that Allah wants to know.
I think it needs more elaboration.

(And We indeed tested those who were before them so that Allah will know those who are true, and will know those who are liars.) meaning, He will make know which are sincere in their claim to be believers from those who are lying. Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, knows what has happened in the past and what is yet to come, and He knows how that which will not happen would have happened if it were to happen. All the Imams of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama`ah are agreed on this.

    Tafsir Ibn Kathir 29: 3

We look at how the first generation [the companions of Allaah's Messenger, peace be upon him] understood the verse, and the explanation above explains the misconceptions. It's also eloquence in language. And Allaah knows best.

    Peace.

Cool Re: Fitan Cause One's Intellect to Depart

    AsalamuAlaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh Wa Maghfiratuh,

    JazakAllah khair bro

"The fitan (trials) which are presented to the hearts - and which are the cause of its weakness - are:

    1. the trials relating to shahwah (false desire) and

    2. the trials relating to shubhah (doubt) ... So the first causes intentions and desires to be corrupted, whilst the second causes knowledge and beliefs to be corrupted."

Speaking about such trials, he - rahimahullaah - said:

"Hearts - when exposed to such fitan (trials) - are of two types:
    • [The first type]: a heart, which, when exposed to such trials, absorbs it like a sponge that soaks-up water, leaving in it a black stain. Such a heart continues to soak-up the various trials that are presented to it, until it becomes dark and corrupted - which is what is meant by "an over-turned vessel", so when this occurs, two dangerous and deadly diseases take hold of it and plunge it into destruction:

Firstly: confusing good with evil, so it neither recognises the good, nor rejects the evil. This disease may take hold of it to such an extent that it believes good to be evil; and evil to be good, Sunnah to be bid'ah (innovation); and innovations to be the Sunnah, and the truth to be falsehood; and falsehood the truth.

Secondly: judging by its whims and desires, over and against what Allaah's Messenger (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) came with - being enslaved by its whims and desires and being led by them also.

    • [The second type]: a white heart in which the light of eemaan is bright and its radiance is illuminating. So when trials are presented to such a heart, it rejects and turns away from them. This further increases its light and illumination and its strength." [Ighaathatul-Luhfaan (pp. 39-40)] - (Ibn Qayyim)
