No recollection of tears shed in prayer, nor swollen feet.
No memory of 'Aishah, nor Anas nor Abu Hurayrah.
No knowledge of the actions of pilgrimage or prayer.
No mention of the Ummah that learned at the Prophet's feet. Not its questions, not his answers, nor their toil. Blueprints for the future...forgotten and buried in the past. Thank Allah. For that dark day never came. True, there have been days of neglect and days of confusion. But the hadeeth never vanished. For the Hadeeth had its keepers. They were scholars who kept alive the authentic traditions of the Prophet, Sal Allaahu 'alayhi Wa Sallam. They were the Muhaddeeths, and Mustalah was their art. [FONT]CENTER]

Dear Friend,
If you'd like to cultivate your emotional connection to Allah's Messenger, learn and appreciate the massive time our 'ulama (scholars) spent preserving knowledge and spend two weekends with hundreds of students of knowledge, then this might be the most important letter you'll ever read.

Here's why:
If all hadith had been given up, what would remain but a wide and empty chasm, fourteen centuries wide, between us and the Prophet? The Qur'aan would be understood according to our whims and desires. And the Prophet, sal Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, would be seen as a mere myth surrounded by legends.

I have indeed been given the Qur'an and something similar to it besides it. Yet, the time will come when a man leaning on his couch will say, "Follow the Qur'an only; what you find in it as halal, take it as halal, and what you find in it as haram, take it as haram." But what the Messenger of Allah has forbidden is like what Allah has forbidden.

The Companions
Once the Messenger sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam left this world, who would the Muslims learn from? It was from the companions:

"We would not be pleased until we rode to Madinah to hear it from their own mouths."
-Abu 'Aliyah-

Then more companions passed away, the ummah began to spread out and the distance between the narrations and the Prophet, sal allahu alayhi wa sallam, grew further. So the memory and calibre of each and every subsequent narrator would be checked by the scholars,

"They would not ask about the isnad (chain of hadith narrators). But when the turmoil happened, they said: Name us your men."

Then during more difficult times, came the problem of hadith forgery.

"We used to listen to hadith and present them to fellow traditionists, just as we present forged coins to money changers: whatever they recognise of them, we accept, and whatever they reject of them, we also reject."
