Re: Prayer in BASIC terms please

    Hi there.

I used to think the same thing before I converted, that I would never be able to do it, or it will take me forever to learn because it seemed like so much to do. One thing I use to do is, I would watch the videos on Youtube showing how to pray, while it was playing, I repeated the same movements that I saw, also by watching the videos over and over again (hey, it worked for me lol), also looking through different websites that teach the words to the prayer. Your Salah will improve as time goes by, eventhough I know how to pray, I'm always looking for ways to make it better, by reading books, watching different videos, and learning more surahs and duas to say. And I learned it all by myself, because I didn't know any Muslims around my area. So, I am sure you can do it also with the help of Allah insha'Allah

Re: Prayer in BASIC terms please

    Assalamualaikum

When I first became Muslim and started to pray it was compeltely overwhelming for me too.

Firstly, all these new words ,then these new actions and on top of that you're supposed to do it 5 times(At least) each day. It was a lot for me to get to grips with.

A sister I knew was kind enoug to write out the compulsory (fardh) parts of the prayer in English transliteration in large print. I then printed this off and put it to the side of my prayer mat. Then I would follow the instructions. I was able to watch online many of the widely available videos(as Im sure ur aware of) and within a very short space of time I was able to complete the whole prayer(fardh parts) by myself. You will be surprised how quickly you pick it up.

Once you have the fardh mastered then you can move on to the other parts of the prayer, like learning other short surahs to accompany you surah fatiha and reading "allahumma salli..." at the end of the prayer.

I will make duaa that it comes easy to you and inshAllah you will pick it up in no time. If you have the conviction and desire to learn then Allah will make it easy for you.

Any childrens book os Salaah, mine is by Ghulam Sarwar of the Muslim Educational Trust, 130 stroud greenroad, London. N43RZ. uk 02072728502. [email protected] I found it so helpful. I have others but they seem a bit complicated. Also go on youtube and enter, how to do salaat/namaz, there is a cartoon version of prayer that is excellent, should be first one that comes up

Alhamdulillah that you've drawn nearer to Allah and may He make it easy for you to make the testification of faith. All I advise is that you make it as soon as possible, because you never know when your time is up.

As soon as you convert, you don't have to know the whole prayer by heart perfectly right away. Take your time...Islam is a religion that was revealed over 23 years. It doesn't mean we should take that long to learn the basics, but it does mean that we need to ease into things and do it step by step. Have you ever tried working out really intensely after not having worked out for a long time? It completely kills you and may even discourage you from continuing to work out.

It does get easier. When I first started I could barely say al-Fatihah and was struggling with saying the rest of the prayer in Arabic and at their stated times. Alhamdulillah by the grace of Allah I have made great improvements.

We all continue to learn every day.

Hi, I posted this in another thread

    "Its your lucky day.

After reading your post I spent the next 1and 1/2 hours fixing my scanner and my old computer. Just to upload these images to you:

I have created a post in the 'PRAYER' section explaining why I included Aytul Kursi and the Salah introcution table and also the orignal book I got this information from should you wish to buy it yourself as it have many pages I only scanned 7 or something.

I hope this helps. It should mean you dont need to sit down and read the arabic, rather the english transliteration, its how I learned.

Inshallah my other post will be approved and turned into a STICKY.

Good luck. Try and keep them all In ramadan in arabic! Mashallah Inshallah"

I just wanted to add, to my above Post (make sure you read those JPEGS), at first break your self in to it.

Start of by reading Magrhib and Asr. and Start by reading just the Furz and slowly but surely come start reading the all. Whenever you say I am now going to add, for example, 4FURZ Isha. Make sure you are loyal to your word and stick to reading it. This means you will never over burden yourself.

Also, YES it does get easy. VERY EASY. like when your in high school and in the first year you think everything is hard, but next year you think it was baby stuff and what you are studying in 2nd year is not harder.

I will start hard but get easy.

While you are teaching yourself the words, GO TO MOSQUE FOR CONGRESSIONAL PRAYER. TRUST ME. that will make you learn the movements in like a week, because you just copy the persons next to you. Then add that to the words, links I posted above, and you will be a MASTER AT IT.

    Trust me.
Prayer, with a little bit if practice, is easier than breathing. You WILL get there.

AGAIN, CHECK MY ABOVE POST THOUGH, THAT HAS THE SCANS OF HOW TO READ SALAH

Re: Prayer in BASIC terms please

    assalaamu 'alaikum,

    Ramadhan Mubarak

Like some of the brothers and sisters had mentioned, take your time. I took my shahadah at the masjid and then they gave me a revert gift (prayer rug, kufi, prayer book, etc) that assisted me. The way I learned the salaat was through practice. I would hold the paper in my hand and pray with it and look at the pictures that coincided with the words I was to say during that movement. I learned it initially in English then I went to Arabic; hence, it made it easy for me to understand what I was saying in Arabic.

Also, yes, attending the masjid and mimicking the movements of the brothers will also help you, insh'Allaah ta'ala. The most important thing for you to do is to ask Allaah to make it easy for you.

Do not hesitate on your shahadah. If you believe in Allaah and His Rasul (saws) and you are learning to pray, make your shahadah, insh'Allaah. Death does not procrastinate.

    May Allaah guide you.

Below is a link of a very good video you can watch, insh'Allaah. I tried the quick link, but it didn't go through. May it benefit you. Ameen.

Pray As You Have Seen Me Pray

You must be a convert right brother?

I'm also a convert and felt the same exact way. I actually didn't convert until I had the prayer almost memorized. I wanted to be able to pray once I converted. But, I would not hold off converting if it is something you really want to do. Like the bother ^ said death does not procrastinate.

It took awhile but I would say to at first write down everything you say during prayer on a sheet of paper and go through the prayer each time it's time to pray and you'll have it down in no time.

I did that and once I started doing it each prayer I had it memorized within a month.

I wish you the best brother and don't give up.

May Allah make things easy on you.

    Jazak Allah Khair

(5) (It is) the fire of Allah, kindled, (6) Which leapeth up over the hearts (of men). (7) Lo! it is closed in on them (8) In outstretched columns. (9)

everytime i start reading something about Islamic prayer it seems to make it out to be very much a chore. I mean no offence. Just seems alot of "stuff" to do just to have a chat with God.

oh and yes i have watched a number of you tube flicks on the subject and a few different flash tutorial..i cant imagine myself doing ALL those steps perfectly EVER:'(:

    does it ever get "easy"?
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salah

    Assalamu Alikum

You'll realise that its so easy after a while,Insh Allah(God willing)

In a prayer there are units called rakats.A unit is where you stand and recite.

But First: [1] Having intention for prayer

The person should be conscious and aware of the particular salat that is being offered, whether it is obligatory, if it is a missed (qadha) prayer, individual or jamaat, shortened traveller's prayer etc. The explicity verbalization of this intention is not required, though can be helpful.
It is done simultaneously with [2] Takbeeratul-Ihram (below).

The person should think his prayer to be the Last Prayer so that he may perform the best he can

    [2] Takbeeratul-Ihram

By rising the hands upto the shoulders , fingers slightly apart Saying الله أَكْبَر (God is The Greatest)Allahu Akbar, is the start of the prayer. Then you put your right hand over the left on the chest or below the chest and begin reciting

    While you recite make sure:
    [3] Standing right

For the able-bodied, leaning or not standing upright invalidates prayer. If one is incapable of standing, one may sit, lay on the right side, lay on the left side, lay on one's back or as one is able to do.

    [4] Reciting Al-Fatiha

Recitation of Al-Fatiha is obligated for every raka'ah.then With Bismillah Ar Rehman Ar Rahim (In the name of Allah , The Most Gracious the most merciful)
Reading another surah(chapter)after Al-Fatiha is also obligatory for the first 2 raka'ah for all obligatory prayers

In each unit(raka) you have to recite surah Al-Fatiha and any surah(chapter) of the Qur'an. You first recite surah al- fatiha then any short surah(only one). After you memorize surah Al-Fatiha then start memorizing the short suras that are at the end of the Qur'an. Start with chapter 112 which is the short surah, surah al- ihlas.http://www.quranexplorer.com/quran/

It is obligatory that you recite surah Al-Fatiha correctly or else it would invalidate your rakat or maybe even the prayer. First say the Bismillah ir Rahman ir raheem after the fatiha nad the surah.

You shouuld pause after each verse of the surah al fatiha.
    http://www.quranexplorer.com/quran/

To get a better understanding of the surah so it makes more sence please watch the short video. You'll like it

Replace the stars with youtube if it doesn't work. If it still doesn't work just go to youtube and type in: In the shade of Ramadan Al faiha.

(Allah, the Exalted, said, `I have divided the prayer (Al-Fatihah) into two halves between Myself and My servant, and My servant shall have what he asks for.' If he says,

    [الْحَمْدُ للَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَـلَمِينَ ]

(All praise and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of existence.)

Allah says, `My servant has praised Me.' When the servant says,

    [الرَّحْمَـنِ الرَّحِيمِ ]

(The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.)

Allah says, `My servant has glorified Me.' When he says,

    [مَـلِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ ]

(The Owner of the Day of Recompense.) Allah says, `My servant has glorified Me,' or `My servant has related all matters to Me.' When he says,

    [إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ]

(You (alone) we worship, and You (alone) we ask for help.) Allah says, `This is between Me and My servant, and My servant shall acquire what he sought.' When he says,

(Guide us to the straight path. The way of those on whom You have granted Your grace, not (the way) of those who earned Your anger, nor of those who went astray), Allah says, `This is for My servant, and My servant shall acquire what he asked for.').''

These are the words of An-Nasa'i, while both Muslim and An-Nasa'i collected the following wording, "A half of it is for Me and a half for My servant, and My servant shall acquire what he asked for.''

Each prayer has a number of rakats. : at dawn (fajr), noon (dhuhr), in the afternoon (asr), at sunset (maghrib) and nightfall (isha'a)[Note:islamic day begins at maghrib]

The 1st prayer has only 2 rakats of fards. In both of these rakats you have to recite the Eudu billah himn e shaytan ir rajeem bismillah ir rahman ir raheem, surah al fatiha and a short surah,in both units.

The 2nd prayer has 4. In the first two units of this prayer you have to recite the same as of the morning prayer. In the rest two rekats of this prayer you only have to recite the Eudu billah himn e shaytan ir rajeem bismillah ir rahman ir raheem and the surah al fatiha, no short surah.

the 3rd prayer has 4. Recite the same as of the noon prayer.

at 4th prayer has 3. In the two of these rakats recite the same as of the morning prayer in the 3rd rakat just recite the Eudu billah himn e shaytan ir rajeem bismillah ir rahman ir raheem and the surah al fatiha, no short surah.

and the fifth has 4. Same as of the 2nd and the 3rd.

After you learn how to pray these obligatory rakats then come and ask about sunnets, additional rakats recomended by Muhammad, saws.

In every prayer you must sit after 2 rakats or units:

    8] Sitting between 2 prostrations

During the sitting between the two prostrations, an additional option is to recite: " Allahummaghfirli, warhamnii, wajburnii, wahdinii, warzuqnii, warfa'nii, wa'afinii, wa'fu'annii" Oh Allah Forgive Me, Have mercy on me, ...

    [9] Final Tashahhud(while sitting)

At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibatu was-salamu 'alayka ayyuha Annabiyyu warahmatullahi wabarakatuhu Assalamu 'alayna wa 'ala `abadillahi assaliheena Ash-hadu anna la ilaha illa Allah Wa Ash-hadu anna Mohammmedan 'abduhu warasuluhu.

All greetings, blessings and good acts are for You, my Lord. Greetings to you, O Prophet, and the mercy and blessings of Allah. Peace be unto us, and unto the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.

    [10] Sitting for Final Tashahhud

The final Tashahhud must be done while sitting.

[11] Greetings for Prophet Muhammad and for Prophet Abraham
