The Prophet Muhammad pbuh said, “The best supplication for seeking forgiveness (Syed-ul-Istighfar) is to say : Dua Astaghfar (Forgiveness) ‎/دعاء أستغفر

"O Allah! You are my Rabb. There is no true god except You. You have created me, and I am Your slave, and I hold to Your Covenant as far as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge the favors that You have bestowed upon me, and I confess my sins. Pardon me, for none but You has the power to pardon".

Whoever makes this dua during the day with firm belief in it and dies on the same day (before the evening) he will be one of the dwellers of Jannah (Paradise); and whoever makes this dua during the night with firm belief in it and dies before the morning, he will be one of the dwellers of Jannah (Paradise).”[Al-Bukhari]

The Power of Astaghfar︎استغفراللہ العظیم الذی لا الہ الا ھو الحی القیوم واتوب الیہ

I seek forgiveness from Him, except Whom there is none worthy of worship. He is Living and Self-Subsisting. He brings others to life and sustains them. I incline towards Him and repent.

The Power of Astaghfar︎‏اَسْتَغفِرُاللّٰہَ رَبِّیْ مِنْ کُلِ ذَنْبٍ وَّاَتُوْبُ اِلَیْہِ

"I ask forgiveness of my sins from Allah who is my Lord and I turn towards Him"

"Ghfr" (forgiveness) occurs many place in the Qur'an. Throughout the Quran, Allah encourages people to seek forgiveness of Allah, He wants to light the burden of sin from man.

"And seek forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful". (Surat An-Nisa 4:106)

"And whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself but then seeks forgiveness of Allah will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful". (Surat An-Nisa 4:110)

The root of istighfar is ghafar, meaning to cover up. Astaghfar means to get strength from Allah to refrain from sin and evil, and to be able to display this strength to refrain from sin. It helps to suppress any feelings or thoughts that may distance one from Allah. Astaghfar means seeking forgiveness of Allah for the sins so far committed and turning repentant unto Allah.

As we are created weak and are likely to make mistakes and transgress. At the same time Allah has allowed us to seek forgiveness. Forgiveness is very important in Islam. By constantly turning to Allah for forgiveness of our sins, we learn humility. Our Creator time and time again tells His creation to repent so that they may be forgiven.

There are numerous verses in the Quran about the importance of asking for forgiveness of Allah. In Chapter Noah, Allah describes the remarkable benefits of Astagfar.

"And Prophet Noah pbuh said, 'Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver

He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers

And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers". (Qur'an 71 : 10-11-12)

Astaghfar is seen as drawing the strength and support of Allah which leads to attaining nearness to Allah and salvation bestowing His mercy and blessings upon us in many different ways as follows:

1. Allah will continuously forgive our sin and purify us.

2. Allah will send rain that's His mercy and blessings which comes down to bless us.

3. Allah will increase us in wealth and children.

4. Allah will provide us garden and rivers.

5. A person gets a relief from every anxiety and distress.

If we reflect upon thses verses then we realise that Asthagfar removes the burden of sin, like rain is the ultimate source of life and prosperity, leading to increase in wealth and children. Garden and river is an analogy that we will have great enjoyment nd happiness in our life.

“If anyone constantly seeks pardon (from Allah), Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress and a relief from every anxiety, and will provide sustenance for him from where he expects not.” [Abu Dawud].

Acting on this same instruction from the Quran, once during a famine Umar Farroq RA came out to invoke Allah for the rain and begged only forgiveness of Him.

The people said: O commander of the faithful, you have not prayed for the rain.

He replied: I have knocked at the doors of heaven wherefrom the rain is sent down, and then he recited these verses of Surah Nooh to them. (Ibn Jarir, Ibn Kathir).

Likewise, when in the assembly of Hasan Basri, a person complained of drought ;

he said to him “Beg forgiveness of Allah.”

Another person complained of poverty,

a third one said that he was not being blessed with children,

a fourth one said that his harvest had failed,

and he continued to remind everyone to beg forgiveness of Allah.

The people asked: How is it that you have suggested to all the people one and the same cure for the different complaints?

He in response recited these verses of Surah Nooh to them. (Al-Kashshaf)

Basically, the one who resorts to Astaghfar and admits his weakness to Allah becomes nearer to Him. When you continuously recur to Istighfar and turn to Allah for help, it allows you to resist evil tendencies with the help and strength given to you by Allah.

Ramdaan, the blessed month of mercy and forgiveness is just around the corner. Let's seek Allah’s forgiveness with utmost sincerity and earnestly, promising not to commit sin. And, it should be noted that sin is not a prerequisite for Astaghfar. As people, we wish to make Allah happy and in order to do so we want to become perfect beings. Prophet Muhammad pbuh, the man to whom the Jannah is guaranteed, seeks forgiveness of Allah at least 100 times a day, just think seriously where we are?

May Allah help us stay on the right path, forgive us and help us repent when we lose power and strength.images%20-%202019-04-27T123901.956.jpegfb_img_1542017311435998099176.jpg
