    Re: English translation of Quraan

    Wa alaikum assalaam my dear,

    (smile) Getting ready for Ramadan?

I like Yahya Emerick's translation, extended study version. It's in Modern English, and has great footnotes and gives the context of Revelation. I feel like I'm back 1400 some years when I read it…

I have several translations. Sometimes I like to compare the different versions when I'm trying to get a good feel of a passage. (smile) So perhaps you could look into getting more than one excellent translation…?

May Allah, the Light, Help you to deepen your knowledge and understanding of His Message.

    Re: English translation of Quraan

    Waalikum Assalaam

I've Noble Qur'an Arb/Eng (9 Vol. Set with Full Tafsir),translated and compiled by Muhammad Muhsin Khan and Dr. Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali.
For beginners,I would highly recommend it since it not only contains short tafsir from At-Tabari, Al-Qurtubi and Ibn Kathir but also backed up with Ahadith from Sahih Al-Bukhari & Muslim. This saves you from getting distracted when it comes matters of fiqh.

Much can be said about the quality of paper on which it is produced(it deserves it) but I am always more concerned with the quality of content not otherwise.

Is it the best translation? No.Infact no one can, what you are going to read is from translator's lens and how he sees it.This is why it is best to learn Arabic(I am struggling with it). Till then you/we can do as suggested above i.e comparing different versions to get the best and suitable meaning.

I really like the English translations in this topic >> http://www.islamicboard.com/qur-an/1...-ayat-day.html and am looking for something similar in sha Allah.
I noticed br O2K is using translation by Muhammad Shakir. You can also use this website to compare http://www.searchtruth.com/list.php various versions available.

    Allow me to rephrase it?

    Re: English translation of Quraan

    dear sister,

Everyone will have their own favourites. It's best to read more than one, so you can see the same thing phrased in different ways, where it might strike a chord more in one translation than another.

At websites like quran.com, you can click on a surah, then on the left, click the translations you wish to see, and then read each verse with four or five translations, to help you get a feel for it. I like looking at Saheeh International, The Noble Qur'an (Muhsin Khan and Hilali) and Pickthall together. Pickthall's good and accurate word for word even though the English is slightly old style, so is Saheeh International which is in more modern English, Muhsin Khan is also good and authentic, but has extensive use of parentheses. Those are my top three. Certainly don't stick to one translation and use a few alongside each other.

If I had to recommend one, it'd be Saheeh International, because the English isn't archaic, yet is still very close to the word by word the meaning of the Arabic, and without being too flowery. Also, Saheeh International are known for not having any leanings one way or the other, and their translation is reliable one, and well-recommended by knowledgeable people (along with Hilali and Khan). However, Saheeh International doesn't have any explanatory footnotes.

    There's a PDF here: http://home.exetel.com.au/rakib/down...a_Alislami.pdf

One that I like with a brief commentary and modern, flowing English, is Towards Understanding the Qur'an, by S. A Mawdudi (originally in Urdu), abridged, translated into English and edited by Zafar Ishaq Ansari, published by The Islamic Foundation. I can't find the abridged version online. The beginning introduction itself is very good, and the full version (six volumes!) has surah introductions (the abridged version doesn't have surah introductions though). However, the Mawdudi one doesn't aim to be accurate word for word, rather to capture the essence or spirit of the translation.

The one I wouldn't recommend, is the M. H. Shakir one mentioned above. M.H. Shakir was a Shi'a, and his translation is a favourite amongst the Shi'as because the wording he uses in his translation of certain verses lends them credence to their doctrines, and in the hard copy footnotes of certain editions, he says that certain verses are referring to Ali, Fatima, Hasan and Hussain (may Allah be pleased with them). Some copies have a reference list in the front which includes a list of verses he has translated which support the Shi'a ithna asharia doctrine. Even though the English is clear, I would avoid this one.

    Hope that helps a bit.

    Re: English translation of Quraan

    Walaikumasalaam everyone!

Thank you so much!! You've all been VERY helpful and i really appreciate you taking time out to reply back with excellent suggestions.

In sha Allah i will have a look at all your recommendations. I like both of your ideas (Muslim InshaAllah & sis Insaanah) to have a couple of translations - i didn't think of that. I am always weary of buying Islamic books because naturally you want the most authentic and truthful translation so it's always good to get opinions from knowledgeable individuals!! Jazahka Allah very much!

Sis Muslim InshaAllah - I know it's very bad and am very embarrassed and ashamed to admit this but i don't own a translation copy. I've read translations online but it would be good to own a copy so i can educate myself in sha Allah and your right, it would be beneficial in ramadan and throughout the year (& years to come) in sha Allah.

Brother Signor - Jazahka Allah for the PDF recommendation. Am going to save and read your recommendation soon if Allah wills.

Jazahka Allah once again for detailed information and names!

May Allah swa help you all find the answers that you are looking for in your time of need and help your families and the ummah too Ameen

    Re: English translation of Quraan

    Assalaamo alaikum,

Yousuf Ali tafseer is very short and good. We always need some tafseer (explanation ) of the verses along with translation. I found the tafseer of S. ABUL A'LA MAUDUDI the best one because it gives the time and cause of revelation of a surah or verses and along with that it gives a summary of the whole surah. He also gives the Islamic history where necessary, and for comparison, gives statement from Bible and Talmud to prove the truth of the Holy Quraan.

For the tafseer of surah Alam-Nashrah I saw tafheem.com on line. It was taken completely from the Maududi's tafseer. Only the introduction was missing. The rest of the surah's translation and explanation was fully from Maududi's tafseer. BUT I WAS SURPRISED TO SEE THAT IN THE SOURCES, THE NAMES OF IBN KATHEER AND MU"AARAFUL QURAAN WERE GIVEN INSTEAD OF MAUDUDI'S TAFSEER. Although the tafseer was not taken from those sources even in the least. I was shocked for this mistake of some one on line and cannot understand why it happened?

Any how you can read it on line. You have to go to tafheem.com and then you can decide yourself to choose it or not.

    Re: English translation of Quraan

I guess I like the Saheeh International the most.
But recently I have been reading this one: http://www.amazon.com/Quran-Annotate.../dp/1597841447
    By Ali Unal.
It is packed with all kinds of interesting footnotes.
It is a big book with small fonts for the footnotes. It is almost 1400 pages.
