And the retribution for an evil act is an evil one like it, but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is [due] from Allah . Indeed, He does not like wrongdoers.

[Qur'aan 42:40]

(And the retribution for an evil act is an evil one like it)

Al-Suddiyy said regarding this: If a person abuses you, [you can] abuse in return with that which is similar but you are not to transgress.

Ibn Abi Najeeh said: [If someone says to you] May Allah disgrace you, [you can say in return] May Allah disgrace him.

Al-Shaafi, based on this Verse, said that a person, who has had his wealth taken from him treacherously, has the right to take back his wealth from the person, who took his wealth treacherously, without that person knowing. And the following Hadith supports his view

Narrated `Aisha:

Hind (bint `Utba) said to the Prophet (ﷺ) "Abu Sufyan is a miserly man and I need to take some money of his wealth." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Take reasonably what is sufficient for you and your children "

[Sahih Al-Bukhaari Hadith No. 7180]

She was given permission to take from his wealth without his knowledge.

(but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is [due] from Allah)

But the person who overlooks the evil another does to him, forgives him, and does not take revenge even if he is capable of taking revenge and refrains only for the purpose of seeking the Pleasure of Allah, then Allah will reward him.
