    When you sin

We all sin. Regardless of how hard we try we sin. Allaah is the All-Merciful. He forgives sins. Continue to strive to avoid sins.

Do not fall into despair after you have sinned. For the believer a sin, however small it may be, is like a mountain. That is the sign of Imaan. Do not let the burden you feel push you into despair because then you will have committed another sin. No one but those who are misguided despair of the Mercy of Allaah.

And the next time you sin make ablution in the most perfect manner, pray two Rak'ah, ask Allaah for forgiveness, and be firm in your intention never to repeat the sin. He will forgive you.

And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allah? - and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know.

Those - their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and gardens beneath which rivers flow [in Paradise], wherein they will abide eternally; and excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers.

    [Qur'aan 3:135-136]

It was narrated that ‘Ali bin Abu Talib said:

“If I heard a Hadith from the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam), Allah benefitted me with it as much as He willed, and if I heard it from anyone else, I would ask him to swear me an oath, then if he swore an oath I would believe him. Abu Bakr told me and Abu Bakr spoke the truth that the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: ‘There is no man who commits a sin then he performs ablution and does it well, then he prays two Rak’ah,’ (one of the narrators) Mis’ar said: ‘then performs prayer and seeks the forgiveness of Allah, but Allah will forgive him.’

[Sunan Ibn Maajah Hadith No. 1395]

    Re: When you sin

But Allah would not punish them while you, [O Muhammad], are among them, and Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness.

    [Qur'aan 8:33]

Indeed, the devil said: I swear by Your Izzah O Lord, I will not stop misguiding Your slaves as long as their 'arwaah are in their bodies. Thereupon, the Lord said: I swear by My Izzah and by My Jalaal, I will not stop forgiving them as long as they keep asking Me forgiveness.

Shiekh al-albaani says the hadith reaches the grade of Hasan when all its routes of transmission are taken into consideration.

It has been attributed to Ibn Abbaas that he said that there are two forms of security in this Ummah. One has been taken [i.e. the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam)]. The other, seeking forgiveness, remains.
