Surah Falaq Virtues And Lessons: The word “al-Falaq” in the first verse, a generic term referring to the process of ‘splitting’, has been restricted in most translations to one particular type of splitting, namely ‘daybreak’ or ‘dawn’.

Surah al Falaq Meaning

Surah Falaq (Arabic: الفلق) is the 113th chapter of the Quran and a Meccan surah. In English, the Surah’s title signifies “dawn” or “daybreak.” Its name is derived from the word “Falaq” mentioned in Verse 1.

Why Was Surah Falaq Revealed?

Surah al-Falaq was revealed to help Muslims seek refuge in Allah by reciting it. The Prophet (PBUH) revealed in one Sahih hadith that
“Allah has revealed to me Ayat the likes of which have not been seen”
The Surahs he’s referring to are surah al falaq and surah an nas.
The hadith goes on to say that the Prophet suggested saying, “Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind…” (Surah An-Nas) all the way to the finish. “Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of Al-Falaq…” till the Surah ends.
Together, these two surahs are so strong that they have been given a specific name: “Al mu’awwidhatayn” (Arabic: ), which means “the verses of refuge.”
The potency of these surahs in repelling sorcery, evil eye, and other evils is considerable, and a slave’s need for Allah’s shelter from these two surahs is higher than his need for self, eating, drinking, and dressing.
According to certain accounts, Allah revealed these two Surahs when the Prophet was unwell as a result of some sorcery performed by his opponents with the Jewish plot in Madina.

When Was Surah Falaq Revealed?


Surah Falaq was most likely revealed at Mecca during the early days of Muhammad’s declaration of his Prophethood.

Between the years 610 and 618 AD. There is significant disagreement since some Quranic scholars believe that this Surah was revealed at Madina.

However, Allah continued reminding the Prophet of other previously revealed Surahs whenever some occurrence or situation needed their repeat.

Hadith About Surah Falaq

Imam Malik was told by Aisha (May Allah Be Pleased With Her) that if the Prophet of Allah was sick,
he would recite the Mu’awwidhatayn on himself and blow (over himself).
If his agony grew unbearable, Aisha agreed to recite the Mu’awwidhatayn over him, take his palm, and wipe it over himself, asking the blessing of those Surahs. This Hadith was reported by Al-Bukhari, Abu Dawud, An-Nasa’i, and Ibn Majah.
Aisha reported:
“Whenever the Prophet (PBUH) went to bed every night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over it after reciting Surat Al-Ikhlas, Surat Al-Falaq, and Surat An-Nas, and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head, face, and front of his body. He used to do that three times.”
(Sahih al Bukhari)

Uqbah ibn Amr Al-Juhani reported that the Prophet (PBUH) said:
“Allah has revealed verses the like of which you have never seen: Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of the people (Surah an-Nas) and: Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak (Surah al-Falaq)”
(Sunan at-Tirmidhi)

Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri narrated:
“The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) would seek refuge from the devils and the evil eye of mankind until the two chapters of refuge (surah al-falaq and surah an-nas) were revealed, so when they were revealed he took both of them and left everything else.”
(Sunan at-Tirmidhi)

What Are Surah Falaq And Surah Naas Called?


Surah Falaq and Surah Naas are called al-Mu’awwidhatayn. They’re named so because their verses both begin with “Qul A’udzu bi-Rabbi.
” They are frequently advised for individuals seeking shelter in Allah and a method to avoid Shaitan and jealous people who want calamity on you.
Referring to these two linked short Surahs that begin with the line “Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of…”
These Surahs are so closely connected, with their contents so similar to one another, that they have been given the same name.
According to tradition, these Surahs were revealed simultaneously, thus their combined name of المعوذتان.

Surah Falaq describes seeking Allah’s Refuge From All Evil in All Creation. And Surah Nas instructs us to seek Allah’s refuge from the evil of all creation’s plots.
Virtues of Surah al-Falaq

While the mysteries and full knowledge of the words of the Holy Quran remain with Allah, here are but some of the virtues of this important surah that we may benefit from:
1- A reward equivalent to Hajj and Umrah

According to the Holy Prophet, whoever recites Surah Al-Falaq throughout the month of Ramadan during any of the prayers, it is as if they fasted in Mecca and would get the reward for doing both Hajj and Umrah.
With Hajj being one of the necessary pillars of our Islamic religion, we must attempt to grasp the significance of this statement – that the force of this surah is as potent as making the holy trip of Hajj.
2- The ability to recite all of the Books that Allah has revealed to humanity.

According to Prophet Muhammed (PBUH), reciting both this surah and the following (al-Nas) will be equivalent to reciting all the Books that Allah has revealed on this planet.
Although we may not completely grasp the enormity of this remark, it demonstrates how strong Surah Al-Falaq truly is.
3- To be read in the daylight and nighttime

This surah is reported to have been taught to the Holy Prophet’s companions to recite after waking up and before retiring to bed. This demonstrates the immense power and need of this surah, as we must always seek shelter from Allah both during the day and at night.

Uqbah Bin Ami Al Juhin (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated: “The Prophet SAW said, ‘Allah has revealed to me Ayat the likes of which have not been seen. Until the end of the Surah Naas and Until the end of the Surah Falaq
1- Best Remedies for Hard illnesses and diseases

Surah Falaq and Naas are the best remedies for serious illnesses and diseases. The second verse of Surah Falaq is all about seeking Allah’s protection from the evil of every created thing and this also includes health-related issues such as:
All kinds of sickness and fevers
Chronic and life-threatening diseases
Mental illnesses such as depression, ​anxiety
Anything that negatively impacts a person’s health and physical life.
Hadith: How Prophet Mohammad SAW used both Surahs for sickness
Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) narrated: “Whenever Allah’s Messenger SAW became sick, he would recite Mu’awwidhat (Surah Falaq and Surah Naas) and then blew His breath over His body. When he became seriously ill, I used to recite (these two Surahs) and rub his hands over his body hoping for its blessings.” [Bukhari 5016]
2- Safety from the evil and every created thing

The two Surahs have been revealed to keep us protected from the evil of every created thing. The evil of every created thing means “everything we come in contact with and experience.”

“(I seek protection) From the evil of what He (Allah) has created” Surah Falaq ( verse 2 )
Evil can manifest itself in two forms:
The things that humans usually consider dangerous to their life & existence such as:
harmful animals like poisonous scorpions, rabid dogs
Natural calamities & disasters like Earthquakes, floods, heatwaves, blistering cold, landslides, hurricanes
Insects like deadly insects like tapeworms, and countless other large and small life-threatening creatures
the Evil and its progeny
The things that are not harmful in nature, but can be infiltrated or impacted by evil and then as a result of it, become harmful to humans such as:
Water is useful for human life, but sometimes it manifests in the form of floods, heavy rains that kill people and destroys infrastructure
Electricity isn’t harmful in nature as humans benefit from it. However, electric current can be dangerous and it can kill humans
People aren’t evil inherently but when gripped by evil they may become dangerous and pose threats to other humans’ life, health, business, and happiness.
Technology is useful but can result in road accidents, plane crashes, creation of new diseases, and complexities
3- Safety from hidden dangers

There are countless hidden dangers lurking as the human mind cannot detect their seriousness and the level of risk they pose to human safety.
Wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqab
“And from the evil of darkness when it settles.” Al Falaq verse 3
The darkness means the night when it overtakes daylight that makes us unable to clearly see things. If a threat is unseen and lurks in places we are unaware of, we need a higher power and intelligence that can protect us.

The benefits this verse can bring are countless as we go through life experiencing moments where we are exposed to such dangers.
Criminals, scams, and fraud
Friends who may appear friendly and well-wishers but could be against your well-being and happiness
Hypocrites may show empathy on the surface, but jealousy and competition can pose a threat to your safety.
4- deportation of black magic

Black magic has long been a tool for evil-minded people and they use it to harm their victim’s life.
The two Surahs were specifically revealed to deal with issues that include magic or secret arts that involve conscious use of evil intention.
usually in the form of spells against other unsuspecting humans.
The 4th verse of Surah Falaq focuses on how we should seek protection from Allah from those who practice magic or people who go to professional magicians.

“From the mischief (evil) of those who practice secret arts,” Surah Falaq verse 4
5- safety from the evil jinn and evil eye

Arrange Two Surahs as part of your daily routine. and appreciate how Allah had mercy upon us by sending these two powerful weapons against jinn an evil eyes.
Abu Said Al Khudri (RA) reported: “The Messenger of Allah SAW used to seek protection against the evil of jinn and the evil eyes till Surah Al Falaq and Surah An Nas were revealed. After they were revealed, he took to them for seeking Allah’s protection and left everything besides them.” [Riyad as Saliheen 1015]
Allah has warned us through Prophet Mohammad SAW by sending these Surahs, but sadly many of us don’t understand the involvement of evil jinns and evil eye in the destruction of human life. These two threats evil jinns and evil eye, first impact a person’s mind and their spiritual health, which ultimately manifests in the physical world in the form of unwanted events such as loss of health, business losses, relationship issues, and countless other problems.
6- safety from jealous persons

Jealousy is something everyone should stay away from as it not only hurts the person who becomes jealous but also the victim. Allah has specifically mentioned this threat in the last verse of Surah Falaq, empowering us to create a safe environment where we are not hurt by jealous souls.

7- commanding control over evil suggestions

waswaasil khannas are a fraud of evil. any negative or evil information in the form of thoughts, ideas, and feelings that penetrate a person’s heart and mind from Satan and outside sources.
These negative thoughts and ideas, if not replaced with good positive thoughts suggested by Allah and His Prophet SAW, turn into delusion
Min sharril waswaasil khannas
Allazi yuwas wisu fi sudurin naas
From the evil of the sneaking whisperer who whispers into the hearts of mankind [An Naas verses 4-5]
If you are not alert and conscious, your mind can catch negative, evil, unproductive, and anti-life thoughts from Satan. If we are not protected through the remembrance of Allah, these negative.

Surah al Falaq Arabic Text

This lovely surah, although being one of the Quran’s shortest chapters, is a powerful method to deepen our love and confidence in Allah. It goes like this:
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ
مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ
وَمِنْ شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ
وَمِنْ شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ
وَمِنْ شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ

Here’s Surah al Falaq in English:
Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak
From the evil of that which He created
And from the evil of darkness when it settles
And from the evil of the blowers in knots
And from the evil of an envier when he envies.”
