Tajweed Vs Understanding the Quran (OP)

    Salam,

I have friends who thinks that pronouncing the quran is more important than understanding the quran, anyone have any good opinions?

My point of view - Purpose of the quran is to guide us, if we dont know what it is saying how will we be guided?

Others say that if you prounce something wrong you change the meaning?

So what should we give more of a priority?

Allah swt will forgive us if we make the mistakes unknowingly but we should try our best to learn and use tajweed.

And yes it is very important we know what we are reading because the Quran contains our way of life. Its like reading an english novel without understanding the story. This reminds me of something, people compete to learn things off by heart but whats the point if you dont understand what you are saying.

If we did both these things our recitations of the Quran will sound beautifull and we will gain so much knowledge by learning the meaning. So i say both is important
Ok, I will agree with this. And it's not that hard when memorizing the Quran to look at the meaning/translations. Also, memorizing those for some of the shorter surahs is easy (imho) whilst the longer surahs, once you have had read it then grasping certain concepts on a surface level becomes easy too.

However, going indepth into the Arabic meanings for yourself , knowing the tafseer and scholarly opinions etc can become more of a challenge, either it requires taking some time off your normal academic educational path and diving into these pearls of knowledge or setting time aside to pursue them (in shorter measures) alongside academia/work. I guess it depends all on what does understanding the Quran implies to someone, but it's not that difficult to start with learning the translations (in your own language) I'll definitely recommend it.
