Please read this and pass it on as much as you can. It is vital and
important information. Muslims shouldnow refrain from using the
term "Mosque". I was flipping through this book the other day
called:
"THE COMPLETE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING ISLAM"(they call
themselves idiots)and it is filled with fun facts. One of them
concerns the term Mosque."!
So many of us think this is the English translation of Masjid. I'm
sure none of us ever wondered how this term came into being when it
really had little in common with how it sounded compared to 'Masjid'.(We were very young when we were taught this English word.
Our minds then were not critical & analytical, so didn't dare to
ask/challenge our teachers, right?)
Anyway this book pointed out that the term 'mosque' is derived from
the Spanish word for"mosquito."It was termed as such because
during the Crusades, King Ferdinand said they were going to go and
swat the Muslims
like mosquitoes". (Where else can they find Muslims in large number
to be swatted if not in a Masjid?). So, they cheekily termed "Masjid" as "Mosque".
So, Dear Muslims, refrain from using this term, which is obviously a disgusting slap in the face to the Ummah.
Educate our brothers and sisters to the history and etymology of
this word. And let us replace it with the word, which is MEANT to be
used:Masjid! The Place of Prostration!!Not Mosque: the place to be
swatted!
This idiotic claim has been refuted before. I cannot be bothered finding the thread, so if someone can do that for the Thread starter, i am sure he would appreciate your assitance.

erm i think its better to call it masjid coz it actually sounds better... and mosque has always sounded like mosquito to me even b4 i read this
plus... seeing we're so lazy about learning arabic, the least we can do is use the bits n pieces of arabic we already know in our daily lives

But my arguement is,... this whole new Scare Tactic program that Muslims have attatched themselves to, it will lead to the Downfall of this Ummah.
For example, my 'islamic teacher' back when i was in Primary school, used to tell me "Always drink with your right hand, if you drink with your left hand, Shaytaan Urinates in the water.."
What a load of crap.
That is why i get really peeved off when i see muslims spreading such rubbish.
We should ALL make a habit of checking how authentic an article is before posting it.

It is better to use Masjid. If for no better reason than because that is what if is. If we ever expect people to understand what we really are all about, it is best to use the proper words in every area. true for a while we may have to write it out as Masjid (Mosque) but that is only because Mosque is pretty well ingrained into the English language. It is thru understanding of even the snallest details can the truth be seen.
Sir Zubair is very right about the mosquito stuff. Sadly, urban legends pop up and they take on a quality of truth and are very difficult to remove. Often they seem logical and make a lot of sense. The danger in them is they are not true and a small untruth has the ability to grow into other aspects.
