are the following essential parts of the wodoo, where if one didn't do them (forgetfully or otherwise) it invalidates the wodoo:

"O you who believe, when you observe the Contact Prayers (Salat), you shall: (1) wash your faces, (2) wash your arms to the elbows, (3) wipe your heads, and (4) wash your feet to the ankles." (Surah Ma'idah, Ayah 6)
Those are the uttermost compulsory actions that must be done in wudhu. The rest are from the Sunnah...I'm sure someone has authentic ahadeeth for them being done, and their rulings.

Think of it this way: Sunnah prayers...(some) are not essential...But why are we advised to carry out?
because every sunnah is like medecine for the soul. we wanna have the remembrance of Allah and good deeds.
if salaah is an antivirus then is it complete without the sunnah? will it protect us from every virus if only the fard is commited whilst the sunnah is neglected?

If wudu is not done properly then you don't have a wudu and if you don't have wudu then your prayer is not accepted since you're praying without wudu. Inshallah check out this:
The sunnah is guidance to mankind, it is not separate from Quran but rather compliments it. Quran says to give zakat, do hajj, pray and sunnah tells us how. We should do what is required in the sunnah. Those who deny sunnah and follow Quran can't even follow Quran properly as it is the Quran that says to obey the Messenger.
[59] Al-Hashr:
59:7
...So take what the Messenger gives you, and refrain from what he prohibits you. And fear Allah: for Allah is strict in Punishment.
72:23
"Unless I deliver what I receive from Allah and His Messages: for any that disobey Allah and His Messenger,- for them is Hell: they shall dwell therein for ever."

The four essential (fardh) part are
1. Washing the FACE from the FOREHEAD to the LOWER portion of the CHIN and from one EAR LOBE to the other.
2. Washing of BOTH the ARMS INCLUDING the ELBOWS ONCE
3. Doing MASAH of a QUARTER of the HEAD ONCE.
4. Washing of BOTH the FEET INCLUDING the ANKLES ONCE.
( according to Hanafi madhab )
leaving any one part of above will invalidate the wudhu.
