Al-Ghawth Al-A'dham

it means the greater...whatever ghawth is lol
it seems to be a person tho...something to do with someone called abdul qaadir al-Kaylaani whoever that is ...just researching
something to do with sufis...if that's what soufia means lol...

If someone prays to the Prophet (saws), to so-called saints, Jinns or angels asking for help or asking them to request help from Allaah for them, they have also committed Shirk. The concept of "Ghaus-i-Azam" (al-Ghawth al-A'dHam), a title given by the ignorant to 'Abdul-Qaadir al-Jeelaanee, is also an expression of Shirk in this form of Tawheed. The title literally means "the greatest source of rescue; the one most able to save someone from danger" and such a description only belongs to Allaah. When misfortune occurs, some people call on 'Abdul-Qaadir by this title seeking his aid and protection even though Allaah has already said:

"If Allaah allows harm to befall you none can. remove it except Him."

The great Imaam, Shaykh Abdul-Qadir al-Jilani was a staunch Hanbali on the Aqeedah of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal r.a.. He said, warning against shirk and bid'ah:

"You are in fact in the house of a King (Allah) whose command is far-reaching, whose power is immense, whose army is vast, whose will is effective, whose authority is irresistible, whose kingdom is everlasting, whose sovereignty is enduring, whose knowledge is precise, whose wisdom is profound and whose judgment is just. Not an atom's weight on earth or in heaven eludes Him, nor does the wrong of the wrong-doer escape His notice. You are the biggest wrong-doer and the worst offender, because you have set up a partner to Him (Almighty and Glorious is He) by your self-willed behavior in dealing with yourself and His creation. Allah (Exalted is He) has said:

Ascribe no partners to Allah; ascribing partners to Him is a tremendous wrong. (31:13)

He also says (Exalted is He):

Allah does not forgive that any partner be ascribed to Him; less than that He forgives to whom He will. (4:116)

Be very wary of associating anything with Allah; do not come anywhere near it. Avoid it in all your behavior, both active and passive, by night and day, in private and in public. Beware of disobedience altogether, in your limbs and organs as well as in your heart. Abandon all sin, both outwardly and inwardly. Do not run away from Him (Almighty and Glorious is He), for He will overtake you. Do not quarrel with Him over His decision; He will demolish you. Do not question the wisdom of His judgment; He will put you to shame. Do not treat Him negligently; He will bring you to your senses and put you to the test. Do not start innovations in His house; He will destroy you. Do not speak of His religion to suit your own whim; He will ruin you and darken your heart, rob you of your faith and understanding, and make you subject to your devil, your lower self, your passions and desires, your family, your neighbors, your companions, your friends and all the rest of His creatures, even your domestic scorpions, snakes, jinn and other vermin. Thus He will upset your life in this world and prolong your punishment in the hereafter."

He also said: "Has there ever been one who was a Walee of Allaah who was upon other than the aqeedah of Ahmad ibn Hanbal?"

I'm not sure whether the individual they refer to as al-Ghawth is actually Shaykh Abdul-Qadir. Walaahu 'Alam.

I asked somebody else about Al-Gawth Al-A'dham...they responded saying: 'You dont know about it? are you even Muslim!?'... So I was like ..

We studied a little about it in Lecture yesterday but I was still confused as to who it is that actually accepts this concept?

It seems to me much like having Peers etc and is very alien to what I have been taught.

a peer or whatever you call it is just a teacher who is someone thought to be close to Allah.



there are fake/extreme ones who dwelve in lots of shirk, and then theres sincere ones who when people ask them for amulets n watnot they say "no rather do this a'maal as advised in the Quran and Sunnah".

My family has such close teachers... and i have seen both the extreme and correct one with my own eyes.

Usually, this belief is spread amongst the lay people in the sub-continent and other such places - whose only source of Ilm are those con-artists who claim to be people of karamaa. Believe me, I've sat with these kind of people before and seen what they do.

but if you manage to find such a man, who gives up his whole life for dawah/tazkiyyah - then i say stick by him strongly!

and if you think about it, that isnt only when it comes to peers, in any regard even in scholars - most would be low-level/fake - apologetic - scholar for dollar etc, rare are the sincere ones who can be trusted.

so both ways it applies, may Allah guide us to be taught by whom he loves, so we can be of those who sincerely love him.

well i see it in the way i think it was meant to be said. Basically they do it our of love and respect, you know the way you might go up to a beloved teacher and compose poetry for him and call him by sweet names. In that way i think a beloved teacher might be called pir wallahu a'lam. Just know any man who calls HIMSELF a pir is defo a fake !

your better off asking a true deobandi sheikh that, my parents teachers have always taught us that we are upon the hanafi madhab, upon the way of the prophet sallallahi alaihi wasallaam and his companions inshaAllaah.

I agree. If he's clearly a good person with the proper Aqeedah and anti-bid'ah, go for it

I differ a little here. There are people who are clearly like what you've described, but the scholars that are real are many, it's just our handicap in the Arabic language and exposure to them that leaves us in the dark. You see, living in West, the only exposure we get to scholarship is what we read online or through hear-say and we assume that 'yeah, these are the scholars' and over time it builds into 'these are the only scholars'. But speaking to people that have sat with the scholars, it's amazing to hear what kinds of people are still alive today, Alhamdullilah.

There are Shuyookh in Madinah, in Egypt and in other places who are really gems amongst men that are simply unknown to us.
