A woman was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of burglarizing and vandalizing a local Islamic center in Sacramento, police said.
Police say 56-year-old Cynthia Sunshine threw an empty fire extinguisher through a window at the Islamic Center of Greater in Sacramento on Monday.
The extinguisher was thrown through the window, emitting a thick smoke that forced the mosque Imams to evacuate it.
Sac Metro and Sac City fire departments were called to the scene along with a hazmat team to assess the damage.
The Department of Homeland Security was also notified of the attack.
The extinguisher was originally thought to be an explosive device.
"It was shocking. Everyone was trying to find out what was happening. People come to this mosque on a daily basis ... hundreds pray here every Friday," said Basim Elkarra, who attends the mosque.
The woman was detained after she was seen loitering in the Islamic Center courtyard on Tuesday.
She is being locked up in the Sacramento County Jail on charges of burglary and vandalism.
Established in 1943, the mosque is the oldest in Sacramento.
