    Morroco travels

    Report bad ads?

    Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi

I am travelling to Morocco in August for one month. Already booked my ticket and expect to arrive at the end of August.
Any advice for me while im there?
What will it be like going through the airport in casablanca? Is it same as in Canada(toronto/montreal)?
Do people there understand the standard arabic dialect?
How hot will it be in september, advice for what to wear?
How many things and what sort of things should I look for to bring back as souvenirs for my friends/family?

Finally, any websites with good information about travel there would be appreciated

    Assalamu Alaikum

You will enjoy morocco very much. It's a beautiful country.

The airport is easy to go through and it's different than Canada's airport. Security wasn't as strict if I recall.

I think most Moroccans understand standard Arabic and even some other dialects, but many of them are also fluent in French.

You can check the weather when September comes and bring appropriate weather wear, but I personally wouldn't know about what it's like during that time.

For souvenirs, there are a lot of beautiful handcrafted and traditional items. I don't think you'd have a problem figuring that one out while you're there

If you're going to be there for a month, I suggest you try visiting other cities than casablanca such as marrakech and fez. If you're going to be alone, please be safe. It's generally quite safe and people are very helpful and kind.

I suggest you be extra safe sister, there are many drugged people walking around in the downtown city so be sure to go with someone who knows what's going on. So just be very cautious inshallah, and have fun. Also make sure you arrange some trips outside of the main cities, go to kinda like the suburbs near the mountains, and all the farms, I'm sure you'll find a good guide inshallah.

    Assalamu Alaikum,

I have traveled all over Morroco and it is without doubt a beautiful country. Who are you traveling with? I would not suggest traveling without a male mahram.

Regarding the airport's then you cannot compare it to first world airport's. However as far as I experienced it is still more efficient than Saudi Airport's. I traveled in March on both occasions and it was getting increasingly hot so I would think the weather will still be reasonably hot in September.

Regarding the language then generally it is only the older generation that can speak/understand Arabic but the younger generation/uneducated generally speak their own language and French. I don't think you should have too many problems with Arabic.

There are souks/bazaars in every city catering mainly for tourists so you will never be short of finding quirky souvenirs for the family. I tend to get mint tea sets and decoration pieces for the family.

Be aware of beggers and fake tourist guides because they are literally all over the place and can spot a tourist from a mile. Once they latch onto you it can be difficult to shake them off so just be firm with them that you are not interested. Certainly give to those who are needy but be careful because if you give to one they will all latch come and latch onto you.

The sellers in the souls can also pester you to buy their goods so again be firm. It can take a few days to master your haggling skills but once you get into it then it can be fun but at the same time do not allow the sellers to over charge you because they will start the pricing very high so offer them less than half of what they offer you and meet somewhere in the middle but once you have your price then stick to it and walk away if you are not happy with the price they want. You will find that a lot of the times they will come after you with a lower price and if you are happy with it then buy it if not continue walking away.

The same applies to taxi drivers. After a few days you will guage the general pricing of taxis and not many use meters (even if they claim to do so) so finalise the price before getting into the taxi. Some taxi drivers will also offer to drive you to the various monuments/tourist attractions. Again decide on a price before proceeding. A lot of the times the taxi drivers will ask you for more at the end than what was agreed and even lie about how much as agreed. Therefore write it down in front of them and also agree timing. Do not allow the taxi drivers to bully you into paying more. Much of the time this can ruin the experiences of the tour but it is the way a lot of taxi drivers are in Morroco.

The best places to get a tour guide is with the hotels. You may not get the lowest prices but at least you have someone who is recommended and if anything goes wrong you can go back to the hotel and discuss it with them there. But do not trust a "cowboy tour guide" as they are everywhere and charge you for not even knowing anything about the places they take you to.

Most importantly DO YOUR RESEARCH into the places, towns and cities you are going into. There is a wealth of information out there and trip forums and websites where you can ask questions regarding the place/s you are going. Research into what the tourist attractions are in the places you are going to. Do not just rely on what the Hotels or taxi drivers tell you. However it will probably be better to contact your hotel to book you a taxi to the hotel as you will be tired when you arrive and will not know what the "acceptable" prices are to pay to get to where you want to get to and the hotel will charge you the standard price for the taxi with a little bit extra for their cut.

Trip Advisor is always a good place because they have sub sections of the country's you can enquire about. Lonely Planet is another good place to ask questions.

The food is lovely but as always be careful what and where you eat as one dodgy meal can ruin days if not weeks of your trip. Again research where there recommended places are to eat where you are traveling to.

I wish you the best trip insha'Allah.
