    Urdu Help!

    Report bad ads?

    Salam Aleikum everyone!
So I have a weird problem with my Urdu. Growing up, my whole family would speak Urdu and i can understand it in pretty well. I can also understand some Punjabi. :0. The problem is that I can not speak the language but understanding for me is easy. So if someone says something to me i know exactly what is being said just can't make a proper conversation. Is this normal? Is there something i can do? Lately I have been trying to speak it but it is very very bad!
    Wa Salam Aleikum!

    Re: Urdu Help!

Yes I agree with Endymion. My parents and siblings speak in urdu to eachother and us siblings talk in english to eachother. But whenever i have to say something to my parents I have to talk in urdu and my urdu is not that good. Just like you i understand everything, but i have a hard time expressing myself in urdu. I can have conversations in urdu, but my accent is terrible and i have trouble pronouncing some words. My advice to you is to speak in urdu with your family and although you will make mistakes in the beginning, it will be worth it once you'll be able to have a whole conversation. The more you speak the better your accent becomes.

    Re: Urdu Help!

Buy a book, go through it cover to cover and practice, practice, practice! Family members you are comfortable with is a good place to start and then branch out to other distant family members, ask them how they are, what you're up to nowadays - simple stuff. Once you have the basic grammar in place and you can construct simple setences, all you need to do is build up your vocab which will come with experience and extra reading.

    This book is very good.

The advantage of going through a book, is that you'll learn the correct way of speaking, which at times may seem a bit pretentious but it's a base from which you can build upon. There are many different ways of saying the same thing and I'm sure you'll pick up some great one-liners from your parents and grandparents as have I!

    Good luck!

If your Urdu speaking is not good but still you should take part in conversation with Urdu speakers, I think it can help you to improve your conversation.
