    Statements of salaf ra (OP)

‘Awn ibn Abdillah (rahimahullah) said, “A man advised his son saying: O my son! You should adopt Taqwa and if you are able to be better today than you were yesterday and to be better tomorrow than you are today, then do so.”(Kitabuz Zuhd of Imam ‘Abdullah ibn Al Mubarak, Hadith: 846, pg. 254 and Hilyatul Awliya, vol. 4 pg. 263/264. Luqman Al-Hakeem actually advised his own son with the same:

“O my son! Sit in the company of the ‘Ulama and stick your knees to theirs, for Allah revives the hearts with the wisdom (acquired from them) just as he revives barren land with the rain”

    (Jami’u Bayanil ‘ilm; ma’alim Irshadiyyah, pg.164)

When ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu) would see youngsters going out in the search of knowledge, he would say,

“Welcome O springs/fountains of wisdom, [you are] lanterns of the dark, wearing simple/tattered clothing, softhearted, [clinging to your homes] and beautiful fragrance amidst all people”

(Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 1600. Also see Hilyatul Awliya, vol. 1 pg. 77)

When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radiyallahu ‘anhu) was mentioned in the presence of Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) he would say:
“You are discussing the forerunner, I take an oath in that being in whose control is my life, whenever we tried to compete with Abu Bakr he always outdid us”

    Re: Statements of salaf ra

Hazrath Luqman (A.S.) was granted great wisdom by Allah Ta'ala. He once said to his son:

"My dear son, avoid incurring debts, for a debt is a humiliation by day (when the creditors make demands) and grief by night (when you cannot sleep worrying about how you will pay it).

My dear son, entertain hopes of mercy from Allah Ta'ala, but let not your hopes make you bold in committing sins; be fearful of Allah Ta'ala but let not your fear make you despair of His mercy.

My dear son, if somebody complains to you that so-and-so has taken out both his eyes and you can actually see his eyes missing, do not form any judgement about the person until you have heard the other side of the story. It is possible that the one complaining may have hit the other person first and taken out his eyes earlier"

    (Fazaa'il -e-Sadaqaat).

    Muatta imam malik
Chapter no: 9, Shortening the Prayer hadees, hadis, hadith
97 Hadiths In This Chapter. Page 10 Of 10
    Hadith no: 91

    Narrated / Authority Of:
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said that Abdullah ibn Masud said to a certain man,"You are in a time when men of understanding (fuqaha) are many and Qur'an reciters are few, when the limits of behaviour defined in the Qur'an are guarded and its letters are lost, when few people ask and many give, when they make the prayer long and the khutba short, and put their actions before their desires. A time will come upon men when their fuqaha are few but their Qur'an reciters are many, when the letters of the Qur'an are guarded carefully but its limits are lost, when many ask but few give, when they make the khutba long but the prayer short, and put their desires before their actions."

    Re: Statements of salaf ra

‘Ataa’ Sulami (rahimahullah) narrates the following:

I was once passing through the alleys of Kufah when I saw ‘Alyaan laughing at a doctor. As it was well known that ‘Alyaan never laughed, I became intrigued and drew closer. As I approached, I asked him why he was laughing. ‘Alyaan replied, “I am laughing at this doctor who is treating the illnesses of others, despite the fact that he is himself fatally ill.” Hearing this, I asked ‘Alyaan, “Do you know of any medication that can save him from his illness?” “Yes!” he replied, “I know of a medication which is such that if it is administered to him, I hope that he will recover.” “What is the formula of this medication?” I prompted. On my request, ‘Alyaan proceeded to prescribe the following:

    1. A few leaves from the tree of poverty

    2. The root of the tree of sabr (patience, forbearance and steadfastness)

    3. Fruit from the tree of humility

    4. Fruit from the tree of ma’rifat (recognition of Allah Ta‘ala)

    5. The ingredient of pondering over one’s condition

Using the mortar and pestle (or the grinding stone) of grief and regret over one’s sins, crush the above ingredients into a fine paste. Thereafter place the paste into the pan of taqwa and pour some of the water of hayaa into the mixture. Using the firewood of Allah Ta‘ala’s love, light a fire beneath the pan and boil the mixture until it begins to froth. Once the mixture is prepared, empty it into the bottle of always remaining pleased over the decision of Allah Ta‘ala. Thereafter, cool the mixture by fanning it with the fan of the praise of Allah Ta‘ala. Finally, take this medication consistently, by pouring a little into the cup of concern over one’s state and condition, and by swallowing it using the spoon of repentance. If this medication is taken regularly, there is hope that the person will never again fall into the illness of disobeying Allah Ta‘ala.

    Fudayl ibn ‘Iyad (rahimahullah) said:

ترك العمل من أجل الناس رياء والعمل من أجل الناس شرك والإخلاص أن يعافيك الله عنهما

Leaving out an action for people is ostentation, doing a deed [to show] people, is shirk. Sincerity is that Allah protect you from these two qualities.

    Re: Statements of salaf ra

On one occasion Hazrat Ali (Radhiyallahu Anhu) mentioned the fitnahs that will occur at the end of time (before Qiyaamah). Hazrat Umar (Radhiyallahu Anhu) then enquired from him: “O Ali, at which time will these fitnahs break out in the ummah?” Hazrat Ali (Radhiyallahu Anhu) replied: “At the time when people will learn Fiqh (acquire the knowledge of Deen) for reasons other than Deen (i.e. for worldly motives); when people will acquire the knowledge of Deen without the intention of practicing on it; and when the actions of the Aakhirat will be done for the purpose of acquiring the wealth of this world.”

    Hz Ali RA said:

Among the things I fear most for you are; following your desires and having lengthy aspirations. Following desires averts you from the truth. Having lengthy aspirations causes you to forget the Hereafter. Certainly the hereafter is advancing and this world is retreating. Each of them has sons. Be among the sons of the Hereafter and do not be among the sons of this world. Today there is action without reckoning and tomorrow there will be reckoning and no action.”

Imam al-Nawawi said in the introduction of al-Majmu(1/93):

“Second: It is incumbent on him-to adhere to a Madhab- and it applies to all those from the jurists and scholars of all the sciences who do not reach the rank of ijtihad. The reason for it is that if it was permissible to follow any Madhab he pleases it would lead to seeking out dispensations of the Madhab’s by following his desires. Thus he would choose between the lawful and prohibited, obligation and permissibility, and that would lead to the freeing of the leash of legal responsibility.”

Ayyūb Al-Sakhtiyānī – Allāh have mercy on him – said:

A man does not become noble until he has two qualities: he is undesirous of what other people possess, and he pardons and overlooks them.

    Ibn Hibbān, Rawḍatu Al-ʿUqalāʾ p167.
