    Statements of salaf ra (OP)

‘Awn ibn Abdillah (rahimahullah) said, “A man advised his son saying: O my son! You should adopt Taqwa and if you are able to be better today than you were yesterday and to be better tomorrow than you are today, then do so.”(Kitabuz Zuhd of Imam ‘Abdullah ibn Al Mubarak, Hadith: 846, pg. 254 and Hilyatul Awliya, vol. 4 pg. 263/264. Sayyiduna Abud Darda (radiyallahu ‘anhu) told his wife Ummud Darda, “If I become angry then try to please me. If you become angry I will [say things that will] please you. Were we not to act this way, how quickly would we be separated!”

    Sufyan Thawri (rahimahullah) said:

It is easier to meet Allah with seventy sins which are between you and Him [i.e. where you have violated the command of Allah] than meeting him with one sin between you and another person [i.e. where you have violated the right of a person/oppressed him in any way].

    Ahmad ibn Harb (rahimahullah) said:

I worshipped Allah for fifty years, but I only found the sweetness and true enjoyment of worship after abandoning three things:

1.I stopped worrying about people’s happiness/hurting their feelings, which enabled me to speak the truth

2.I desisted from spending time with open sinners, which allowed me to enjoy the company of the righteous

3.I stopped pursuing the pleasures of this world, which allowed me to experience the sweetness of the Hereafter

Alī b. ʾAbī Ṭālib – Allāh be pleased with him – said:

''Do not be with the sinner (fājir), for he will beautify to you the things he does, and he will want you to be like him; and he will beautify to you the worst of his practices; and his entrance upon you and leaving from your company will cause ignominy and discredit [of you].
And do not accompany the fool (aḥmaq), for he will exhaust himself [to help you] but will not benefit you, and he may want to benefit you but end up harming you; his silence is better than his speaking, his distance is better than his closeness, and him dying is better than him living.
And do not accompany the liar, for life will not benefit you with him, he will tell others what you say, and tell you what others say; and if you speak the truth, it will not be believed.''

‘Stick with your true brothers. You can live in comfort with them, as they are a delight in times of ease, and you can lean on them in times of hardship. Assume the best about your brother until he comes with something that should alarm you from him. Avoid your enemy, and beware of befriending anyone but the trustworthy, and there is no trust for the one who doesn’t fear Allah.’
