    Statements of salaf ra (OP)

‘Awn ibn Abdillah (rahimahullah) said, “A man advised his son saying: O my son! You should adopt Taqwa and if you are able to be better today than you were yesterday and to be better tomorrow than you are today, then do so.”(Kitabuz Zuhd of Imam ‘Abdullah ibn Al Mubarak, Hadith: 846, pg. 254 and Hilyatul Awliya, vol. 4 pg. 263/264. Naasiruddeen at-Toosi (رحمة اللہ علیه) said:

"The nobility of knowledge is not concealed from anyone. This is because knowledge is a peculiarity of humanity. All other qualities such as bravery, strength, kindness, etc. apart from knowledge are shared by humans and all other animals. It was on the basis of this knowledge that Allaah (سبحانه و تعالى) displayed the superiority of Adam (عليه السلام) over the Angels (عليهم الصلاة والسلام) and ordered them to prostrate before him.
Moreover, knowledge is the means of reaching eternal happiness provided that there are deeds in accordance with the demands of knowledge."

    Imam al-Awza’i {Abu Amr} rh said:

There is not an hour from the hours of this Dunya {world} except that it will be presented to the slave on the Day of Judgement, day after day, and hour after hour.

Not an hour that passed in which he did not remember Allah –the Exalted- in, except that his soul would tear up in anguish out of regret. How then when hours after hours pass, and days after days, and nights after nights {and Allah has not been remembered}?!

Imam Hasan Al-Basri {May Allah send His Divine Mercy upon him} said:

“One who acts without knowledge is like one who travels off the path; and the one who acts without knowledge corrupts more than he rectifies.
So seek knowledge in a way that does not harm your worship, and seek to worship in a way that does not harm your knowledge.
For verily, there were people {Khawarij} who sought to worship, but they abandoned knowledge until they attacked the community of Muhammad with their swords.
However, if they had truly sought knowledge, it would not have directed them to do what they did.

‘Ali Ibn Abi Taalib ra said:

“The thing I fear for you most is following desires and having extensive hopes (about this worldly life). Following one’s desires blocks you from the truth, and having extensive hopes makes you forget the hereafter. Verily, this worldly life is departing and the hereafter is approaching and each of them has its children. So be children of the hereafter, not children of this world, for today there are (opportunities to do) deeds and there is no reckoning, but tomorrow there will be reckoning and no deeds.”

Abdur Rahman ibn Abee Haatim Ar-Raazee said:

“I entered upon the students of hadeeth in Damascus and I passed by the circle of the Scholar Qaasim al Joo’ee
So I saw a group sitting around him and he was speaking to them
Their appearance amazed me, so I went and sat and heard him say:
‘Seize five things from the people of your time:

When you are present, you are not known
And when you are absent, you are not missed
And when you are present your advice is not sought
And when you say something, your speech is not accepted
And when you do something, you are not given anything for it
I also advise you with five things:
When you are wronged, you do not wrong others
And when you are praised, you do not become happy
And when you are criticized, you do not become sad
And when you are not believed, then do not become angry
And when others betray you, then do not betray them’
So I took this as my benefit from Damascus”

‘Seek help in every field from an expert in that field.’”

‘Abdullâh b. Al-Mubârak – Allâh have mercy on him – said:

It is right that an intelligent person does not undervalue three [types of people]: the scholars, the rulers, and [his Muslim] brothers.
Whoever undervalues (does not respect him, does not value his knowledge, his authority, does not seek knowledge from him, etc) the scholars will lose his afterlife, whoever undervalues the rulers will lose his worldly life, and whoever undervalues his brothers loses his good character and conduct.

    Re: Statements of salaf ra

'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (RA) was heard to say to a nephew of his who had left al-Waht, "Are your workers at work?" "I don't know," he replied. He said, "If you were clever, you would work as your workers work." Then he turned towards us and said, "When a man works with his workers in his house (and Abu 'Asim once said, 'in his property'), he is one of the workers of Allah Almighty."
