UWT Needs Your Help - Ummah Welfare Trust Needs Your Help - Please Help and Support

Barclays decision to close UWT account.

The Ummah Welfare Trust (UWT) is dismayed by receiving a 30 day notice from Barclays to close their bank account. The trust has been banking with Barclays since its inception in 2001 in order to carry out relief operations in over twenty countries across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East providing support to over a million people.

Barclays Bank has given no apparent reason to why the notice has been served. UWT Director of Operations Mohammed Ahmed said in a statement, “We are deeply concerned with Barclays Bank’s decision to close our accounts without any justification. This decision will not only affect the great work carried out by UWT but will affect millions of people who rely on UWT. This decision sets a dangerous precedent of disrupting British charities without any substance, especially as INTERPAL is in the process of having its bank accounts closed by Lloyds TSB. Targeting charities in this way shows there is a conceited attempt to stop the good work in politically-sensitive regions by leading British Muslim charities.

UWT is calling on all supporters and friends to urge Barclays Bank to review its decision so UWT can continue its humanitarian projects across the world without any disruption. UWT would like to reassure its supporters this is a decision of a bank and does not reflect the view of the Charity Commission.

    • UWT is transparent and accountable and has a full audit trail from the donor to the beneficiary.
    • UWT is fully committed to a 100% donations policy. There is no deduction for administration or fundraising purposes.
    Aims & Objectives
    • To provide water and sanitation facilities in the drought stricken areas.
    • To provide basic food provisions for widows, orphans and families in need.
    • To reconstruct Mosques and Education Centres and provide funds for their maintenance.
    • To sponsor orphans and maintain their physical and spiritual upbringing.
    • To provide sponsorship of families affected by conflicts and natural disasters.
    • To provide relief and funds towards reconstruction of homes.
    • To sponsor and assist the immigrants in the affected regions.
    • To establish medical and rehabilitation clinics for the victims of war, oppression and drug abuse.

    Our Commitments

By the grace of Almighty Allah, UWT is committed, to ensure that every penny donated reaches its intended destination. Not a single penny is deducted for administration or fundraising costs. However, like any other organisation, administration costs are inevitable.

    Administration Costs Are Covered By:
    1. Donations specified for administration.
    2. Income generated from recycled clothes. UWT has a wide scale recycling scheme across the UK with over thirty clothing banks.
    3. Profits received from The Ummah Shops and charity shops. In Bradford and Leicester branches, UWT operates charity Shops. In Blackburn, Bolton, Luton, Birmingham, UWT operates The Ummah Shop which has since become a high quality retailer of books, Islamic-ware, and other day-to-day items required to assist in practicing the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
    4. Tax reclaim on gift aid donations. The gift aid scheme allows donors to increase the value of their donation by 25%. This is a simple and effective way to assist the administration of the charity.

...I wonder at the one who extends his right hand
To his beloved at the time of seperation and he hastens therein!
I felt weak and incapable of saying farewell when I saw him
So my heart shook his hand whilst my eye wept....

Re: Ummah Welfare Trust Needs Your Help - Please Help and Support

I'll certainly email a protest and ask them why they have closed the account of such a worthy charity. Though I do wonder why the charity chose to bank with Barclays instead of an Islamic bank. There is the Islamic Bank of Britain now which is Sharia'a compliant.
