The reason why one of James Bulger's killers is back in prison will not be revealed, the Justice Secretary Jack Straw has said.

Mr Straw said divulging the reason why Jon Venables was returned to prison was not in the "interests of justice".

The 27-year-old was released on life licence in 2001, having been jailed for the 1993 murder of two-year-old James on Merseyside.

Denise Fergus, James's mother, had earlier called for more information.

Mr Straw's decision has been backed by the judge who originally issued the anonymity order on Venables and Thompson, in 2001, saying that if it was lifted now the pair could be killed.

Several media outlets have reported that Venables was recalled to prison on suspicion of offences related to images of child abuse.
Well, this is disgraceful. Not only is Jon Venables a child killer, he's a also an alleged peadophile. I'm very angry about this. He got let out of jail early for killing someone, hey let's just let him get away with child porn now, all the while keeping his anonymity, lest someone take true justice into their own hands!

Re: Bulger Killer Jon Venables' Recall Reasons Stay Secret

No choice at all IMHO. The intention is to preserve justice, not deny it. The 'fair trial' thing works both ways. It is not only the possibility of the the jury being prejudiced against Venables, but the fact that even if they were not and found him guilty, in view of the saturation publicity it's likely an appeal would decide that they might well have been.

Whatever the alleged offence, this is NOT a re-hash of the Bulger trial and what name he uses in Court is irrelevant. He will be tried for that offence and is not 'getting away' with anything. Although the murder was an appalling crime, it shouldn't be forgotten that Venables was only 10 years old when he committed it and in those circumstances, to me anyway, the idea of of a life-long sentence is ridiculous. As an adult, though, he was released on license and if he has broken the terms of that he must, and will, pay the consequences.
