Re: Listen to Mursi's speech now live in the UN

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Egypt's new Islamist president, Mohamed Mursi, speaking about recent violent assaults on U.S. diplomatic missions in the Muslim world, said freedom of expression carries responsibilities when that expression threatens peace and stability.
"If we wish to co-exist and prosper, we must do so by living together rather than by seeking to dominate one another," said Mursi, who is in New York to attend this week's U.N. General Assembly meeting.
He spoke at a philanthropic meeting convened by former U.S. President Bill Clinton.
An anti-Islam film posted on YouTube provoked protests across the Muslim world this month. Related violence included the storming of U.S. and other Western embassies, the killing of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and a suicide bombing in Afghanistan.
Mursi's appearance in New York comes at a delicate time for relations between the United States and Egypt. Anti-American protests have cast new shadows over U.S. engagement with the region, and President Barack Obama said in a recent interview that the United States considered Egypt's Islamist government neither an ally nor an enemy.
Mursi recently told The New York Times that Washington must change its approach to the Arab world and help build a Palestinian state to reduce pent-up anger in the region.
He challenged the international community on Tuesday to develop a new model of global governance that would aid the world's needy and promote dignity.
"I simply cannot watch the blood that's shed in Syria or the children that are starving in Gaza and claim that our model of global governance works," Mursi said.

REFILE-UPDATE 2-Egypt's Mursi calls for cooperation between cultures

    * Mursi says freedom of speech comes with responsibility
    * Addresses controversy over anti-Islam film and violent reaction
    By Edith Honan
NEW YORK, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Egypt's new Islamist president Mohamed Mursi delivered a call on Tuesday for "genuine cooperation" between cultures, but in the wake of violent assaults on U.S. diplomatic missions in the Muslim world he also cautioned that a joke in one culture may not be funny in another.
Speaking at a philanthropic meeting convened in New York by former U.S. President Bill Clinton, Mursi signaled an embrace of multiculturalism as an alternative to a single culture seeking dominance.
"The world cannot become one culture or one civilization. However, can we have civilizations that live side by side, not against one another? It is possible," said Mursi. "Maybe a joke in one country is not funny in another country. That's the nature of culture."
Mursi's speech, one day before he is to address the United Nations General Assembly, came at a delicate time for relations between the United States and Egypt.
Once strong allies, the relationship has been strained in the aftermath of Egypt's pro-democracy uprising, which ousted autocratic President Hosni Mubarak.
An anti-Islam film posted on YouTube provoked protests across the Muslim world this month. Related violence included the storming of U.S. and other Western embassies, the killing of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and a suicide bombing in Afghanistan.
The anti-American protests have cast new shadows over U.S. engagement with the region, and President Barack Obama said in a recent interview that the United States considered Egypt's Islamist government neither an ally nor an enemy.
Mursi, who was elected in June, recently told The New York Times that Washington must change its approach to the Arab world and help build a Palestinian state to reduce pent-up anger in the region.
Mursi addressed the controversy over the YouTube film directly, calling it a work of "religious defamation." He said that while as a Muslim he viewed human life as sacred, he added that "physical violence is not the only form of violence."
"While we must acknowledge the importance of freedom of expression, we must also recognize that such a freedom comes with responsibilities especially when it has serious implications for international peace and security," he said.
He also challenged the international community to develop a new model of global governance that would aid the world's needy and promote dignity.
"I simply cannot watch the blood that's shed in Syria or the children that are starving in Gaza and claim that our model of global governance works," Mursi said.

Egypt’s Mursi Challenges Israel, Claims Arab Leadership

By Nicole Gaouette - Sep 26, 2012 2:34 PM ET

Egypt’s President Mohamed Mursi staked a claim for his country’s renewed leadership of the Arab world by calling for changes in the international economic system and indirectly challenging Israel for possessing a nuclear arsenal.
“The will of the people, especially in our region, no longer tolerates the continued non-accession of any country to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the non-application of the safeguards regime to their nuclear facilities, especially if this is coupled with irresponsible policies or arbitrary threats,” Mursi told the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York today.
Israel, which is not a NPT signatory, has never acknowledged that it possesses nuclear weapons, although U.S. intelligence officials estimate that it has as many as 200 of them.
In recent months, Israel has warned that it may attack Iran’s nuclear facilities if it thinks the Tehran government is getting too close to developing a nuclear weapon. Iran, whose known uranium enrichment facilities are under international safeguards to prevent diversion for weapons, insists that its program is solely for civilian use.
Mursi went on to deliver a rebuke that seemed equally directed at the U.S. and President Barack Obama, who yesterday said the U.S. would do whatever it takes to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and warned that time isn’t unlimited for diplomacy to resolve the issues.
“The acceptance by the international community of the principle of pre-emptiveness or the attempt to legitimize it is in itself a serious matter, and must be firmly confronted to avoid the prevalence of the law of the jungle,” Mursi said.

http://www.almasryalyoum.com/node/1138721مرسي: ما وقع من إساءة للرسول نرفضه ونعادي من يفعله

    869265 01 021 - Listen to Mursi's speech now live in the UN أ.ف.ب
