Google has changed the tagline on its Palestinian home page from 'Palestinian territories' to 'Palestine', suggesting its now recognises the disputed region as an independent state.
The move follows the UN decision in November 2012 to upgrade Palestine's status from an 'entity', to a 'non-member observer state'.
As a result anyone logging on to www.google.ps will now see 'Palestine' in Arabic displayed under the main Google logo. New look: Google has changed the tagline on its Palestinian home page from 'Palestinian territories' to 'Palestine'

Google spokesman Nathan Tyler, said: 'We’re changing the name ‘Palestinian Territories’ to ‘Palestine’ across our products. 'We consult a number of sources and authorities when naming countries. In this case, we are following the lead of the UN, ICANN, ISO and other international organisations.'
Although the move to upgrade Palestine to a nonmember observer state has changed little on the ground, it carried deep potential significance.
The vote amounted to an international endorsement of the Palestinian position on future border arrangements with Israel and an overwhelming condemnation of Israeli settlements in the areas claimed by the Palestinians.

Israel also continues to restrict access to Gaza. Israel withdrew seven years ago from the coastal strip, and it is now ruled by Hamas Islamic militants who regularly fire rockets at Israel.
Israel, backed by the U.S., campaigned strongly against the statehood measure, accusing the Palestinians of trying to bypass direct peace negotiations, which it said were the only viable path to a Palestinian state.
The Israeli lobbying efforts failed miserably. Just eight other countries voted with Israel, and even its closest allies in Europe, including Germany, Italy, France and Britain, either abstained or voted with the Palestinians.

The phrase 'Palestinian territories' is used to describe the West Bank (including East Jerusalem) and the Gaza Strip.
The UN, the EU, the Red Cross and the British government have all used the term 'Occupied Palestinian Territories'.
Many Israeli's strongly object to because they claim it effectively disregards Israels claims to the region.
There is some confusion due to the use of the phrase 'Israeli-occupied territories' which, as well as the West Bank and the Gaza Strip also includes the Golan Heights which once formed part of Syria.
The three areas were occupied by Israel after the six days war in 1967.

I can't see why people think that this is good, yes west bank gets recognized as being palestine? So the west bank is palestine and the rest of the occupied territories isnt? I may be pessimistic but mr Abbas have more often acted towards the will of the israelis and the US rather than the palestinians although he still recieves alot of support. And israel still continues to build more settlements, where is the Un? exactly, israel may withdraw from the west bank but if Abbas is going to be used as puppet by the US then it still makes no difference.
Hamas is completely right that these so-called peace talks are false and hence i support hamas, they try unify with Fatah but fatah today is lead by Abbas and Abbas is being used, so the fatah movement is being controlled now.
If the palestinians fall into the divisions made by israel by one supporting fatah and hating hamas and by one joining hamas and hating fatah, thats actually what those zionists want. Its a classical strategy.
I barely see this as good news, anyone who wants to remain ignorant to the palestinian issue(not directed to the OP) remains ignorant. So the west bank is palestine now? Not haifah, not whole jerusalem? Just ramallah and a eastern part of al-quds plus some ground around it is called palestine now? Please, the UN is a joke totally controlled by this scam by playing nasty tricks like this.

Mahmoud Abbas is not even president any more - by election laws of Palestine. His term of the office has ended years ago. By law real president is a speaker of the legistative council of Palestine (PLC). By law any decision what Abbas makes or signs, is not legal at all. The current speaker is legislator Aziz Duwaik. But oops he is from Hamas.
