Las Vegas Shooting: 50 Killed and 406 Hurt Near Mandalay Bay
by ANDREW BLANKSTEIN, PETE WILLIAMS, RACHEL ELBAUM and ELIZABETH CHUCK
A lone gunman released a rapid-fire barrage of bullets on an outdoor country music festival in Las Vegas Sunday night, killing at least 50 people and injuring more than 400 others, police said, in the worst mass shooting in modern American history.

From his room on the 32nd floor of a glitzy hotel, the shooter, identified by law enforcement officials as Stephen Craig Paddock, 64, of Mesquite, Nevada, fired shot after shot down on the crowd of about 22,000, sending terrified concertgoers running for their lives.

“We heard what sounded like firecrackers going off. Then all of a sudden we heard what sounded like a machine gun. People started screaming that they were hit… When we started running out, there were probably a couple hundred [people] on the ground,” witness Meghan Kearney told MSNBC.

"People kept dropping and dropping… People were getting shot one foot away from us," she added. “People were trying to save their friends. There were gunshots everywhere. Helping them would’ve meant that we got shot, too.”

    The Latest:

50 people were killed, more than 400 injured in deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.
Gunman identified as Stephen Paddock, 64-year-old man from Mesquite, Nevada.
At least 10 weapons were found inside Paddock's room at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.
President Donald Trump is monitoring the developments, the White House said.
Police responded to reports of the shooting just after 10 p.m. (1 a.m. ET). Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told reporters Monday morning that authorities believe Paddock killed himself before police entered his room.

Earlier, officials had said police fatally shot Paddock.

The suspect is believed to have checked into the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on Sept. 28, Lombardo said, and had an "excess of ten rifles" in his hotel room.

It was not clear whether Paddock had specifically requested a room on a high floor that overlooked the concert venue or whether he had prevented housekeepers from entering his room in the days prior.

    NBC News
The shooting is not believed to be connected to international terrorism. Authorities have not said what kinds of weapons were found.

Former Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Bill Young’s 22-year-old daughter was at the concert. Young told MSNBC his daughter said the weapon “sounded like a machine gun” and that she and her friends took cover under a desk.

"I picked up the phone, my cellphone, and she was screaming and yelling, 'Dad, dad, dad, dad, somebody’s shooting at us, and I don’t know what to do.' She was hysterical and I tried to just calm her down," Young said. "She could hear the gun shots — sounded like a machine gun, she said — and they didn’t know where they were coming from. She had nowhere to take cover, so I told her just to run as fast as she could, as quick as she could out of the arena. Get as far away from it as she could where she thought the line of fire might be."

Authorities were digging into Paddock's history. Other than a citation he received several years ago that was "handled as a normal practice" by the courts, Lombardo, the police chief, said he had no criminal background. He didn't offer any more details.

The shooting started while performer Jason Aldean was onstage. Witnesses described a chaotic scene of back-to-back bullets raining down from above, lasting for up to 10 minutes.

Fellow performer Jake Owen said he was standing about 50 feet away from Aldean when the shots started.

"It got faster and faster, almost like it was an automatic rifle," Owen said. "At that point, everyone on stage started running everywhere."

Owen dashed by victims covered in blood and eventually found shelter in his bus. The gunfire still hadn't stopped by the time he got there, he said.

"It wasn't something that was quick. It was chaos for a pure seven to ten minutes," he said.

At least one off-duty Las Vegas police officer was among those shot, Lombardo said. Several other off-duty police officers are believed to be among the dead and injured.

The massacre put the normally bustling Strip at a standstill. Flights in and out of the Las Vegas airport were temporarily halted.

Police have located Paddock’s roommate, Marilou Danley, 62, and don't think she was involved, Lombardo said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.

A search of their home in Mesquite, located about 80 miles away from Las Vegas, was underway.

The suspect's brother, Eric Paddock of Orlando, told NBC News he was "dumbfounded" by the shooting.

"He was just a guy," Eric Paddock said. "He lives in Mesquite, he went to the hotels, he gambled, he went to shows."

"We are completely at a loss," he added.

Re: Las Vegas Shooting: 50 Killed and 406 Hurt Near Mandalay Bay

Amaq, the Daesh news agency, has claimed that the man who carried out the attack converted to Islam and that there is some unspecified connection between him and his planning, and Daesh and their plans and goals. Unlike in countless other identical situations however, authorities are answering back to those claims by saying there is no evidence other than the claim of a terrorist media outlet, and their claims are no longer being treated as absolute fact.So take note, everybody. You've seen this before, and you've pointed the finger in the wrong direction in the past. You- yes you, I'm talking about you- you're always saying that the Western media jumps to conclusions and hates Muslims and puts the blame on you far too quickly. No they don't. Amaq does this, and it does the same thing every time. Authorities need time to properly investigate, real media outlets generally do what they're told to do in terms of exercising restraint and holding back from jumping to conclusions, and it turns out that Amaq, the Daesh news agency, is the actual bogeyman that always tries to make it about Islamic supremacism and the imperialistic goals of Daesh in particular. They. Are. Doing. This. Pay attention. Amaq is doing this. They usually do this within 12 hours of a massive attack taking place, they've already done it with this one, and sometimes maybe they actually do have inside knowledge of Daesh involvement and connections. Sometimes yes, sometimes no, who knows, it's hard to say. It's a propaganda machine, Amaq is not necessarily known for its reliability, but we do know what they are doing in terms of their communication to the general public.Amaq is making a connection between this and Islam. And this time, authorities are answering back with "We need a lot more time and quite a bit more evidence." So when you see people making the connection that I Know you don't want to be made,Pay Attention Right Now,Blame Amaq. Don't you dare blame anyone else, especially not this time. Blame Amaq, do it properly, do it here, do it now. That is who you should blame, and I want to see it done right. Also bear in mind that they might- they just might- be completely right. It's possible that there is a meaningful connection to Daesh and that's exactly how and why Amaq is claiming it for them. Not necessarily of course- we don't know that and are unable to confirm- but if we are strictly talking about the irritating efficiency and blazing speed with which this type of attack is immediately connected to Islam- whether they're right or wrong- Amaq did that. Amaq is always doing that. So Blame. Amaq. For. That. They did it, they are doing this, blame them. Not anyone else, just them. Blame them. Do it. Give them the credit they deserve for the thing that they obviously did. Do it today, retroactively do this for a dozen other attacks, then look for it and prepare to do the same thing when it happens again and again and again. Stop blaming all the wrong people and blame Amaq. Start now. Start today.Yes you. Of course I'm talking to you. Do it.

    More on the ISIS claim:

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/isis-claims-las-vegas-shooting-145638921.html

ISIS Claims Las Vegas Shooting, Says Stephen Paddock Converted to Islam
Newsweek Jack Moore,Newsweek 4 hours ago
The Islamic State militant group (ISIS) claimed responsibility on Monday for the shooting on the Las Vegas Strip that killed at least 58 people and injured 518 more, claiming that shooter Stephen Paddock had converted to Islam months ago.

The jihadi group released the claim on its self-styled news agency Amaq, on the encrypted messaging app Telegram. It typically uses this platform for official claims of responsibility.

The statement, in Arabic, read, "Attacker of the #Las_Vegas shooting is a soldier of the Islamic State and carried out the operation in response to targeting coalition countries," Jihadoscope, a cybermonitoring company that monitors jihadi activity, confirmed in a translation sent to Newsweek.

"Attacker of Las Vegas converted several months ago," the text accompanying the claim in a second post read, in what experts say is an unusual move by the group. It usually posts a single message when it claims responsibility for an attack.

Attackers inspired by ISIS have previously sent videos pledging allegiance to leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi before their assaults. No such video has yet emerged from Paddock.

    ISIS screenshot
The ISIS text that claimed Paddock converted to Islam months ago. Jihadoscope

Michael S. Smith II, co-founder of terror analysis company Kronos Advisory, who regularly tracks ISIS activity, also confirmed to Newsweek the claim of responsibility and the claim about Paddock's conversion.

However, a U.S. official, unauthorized to speak publicly and speaking on condition of anonymity, tells Newsweek, "There is no indication that there is any link whatsoever. They claim a lot of things."

The FBI said that "no connection" between Paddock and radical Islamist extremism had been found.

"As this event unfolds we have determined to this point no connection with an international terrorist group," Aaron Rouse, the special agent in charge of the Las Vegas office of the FBI, said in an announcement, AFP news agency reported.

His family also said there was no indication that there was a religious motive behind the attack.

"We have no idea how this happened," brother Eric Paddock, 55, of Orlando, Florida, told the Las Vegas Review Journal. "It’s like an asteroid just fell on top of our family."

He continued: "There is no reason we can imagine why Stephen would do something like this. All we can do is send our condolences to the people who died. Just no reason, no warning." There is no other evidence to suggest that Paddock had converted to Islam or was a Muslim prior to the attack.

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman said that Paddock was a "crazed lunatic full of hate."

ISIS regularly takes responsibility for attacks in the West even if it has not directed them, instead suggesting that it played a role in inspiring them.

But it has declined to claim several attacks in which they are suspected of playing a role of inspiration, such as the Stockholm attack in April when a man drove a van into pedestrians in the center of Sweden's capital, killing six people.

It also rarely claim attacks in Turkey, where jihadists have carried out suicide bombings on Ataturk Airport in Istanbul and a peace rally in Ankara. It has been disciplined in its claims, which had made experts even more perplexed by Monday's claim for the Las Vegas attack.

But some false claims have crept past its strict guidelines, signaling that the group is becoming more willing to claim attacks with no radical Islamist motivation at all. In June, the group claimed credit for a gambling addict carrying out a shooting at a casino in Manila. Authorities said the man had a heavy debt, and no radical Islamist leanings, indicating that ISIS had completely falsified the claim.

The radical Islamist group has continued to suffer a series of battlefield defeats in Iraq and Syria to ground forces supported by the U.S.-led coalition. It has been at pains to re-amplify its message as a result. Last week, it released a new audio message from its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi that reiterated the group's call for attacks despite the loss of territory.

Authorities have yet to release a motive for the attack, which the shooter launched from a 32nd-floor room in the Mandalay Bay casino, across the street from the Route 91 Festival, where thousands had gathered to watch country acts. It was the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history.

Paddock used automatic weapons to shoot down on the concertgoers, causing panic and chaos on the street below. Police found 10 automatic weapons in his room, where he shot himself dead before the SWAT team arrived at the scene.

An eyewitness, Quinn Mell-Cobb, a 24-year-old Sales Representative for Warrior Hockey from Vancouver, told Newsweek how gunshots sounded like they were coming from "everywhere" and initially sounded like "firecrackers." The slow realization that they were gunshots resulted in mass panic and shrieks from the crowd as the gunfire continued.

Las Vegas authorities were already on high alert before the attack. In May, ISIS released a video showing the famous Strip as a potential target. The 44-minute-long video showed footage of the strip from 2015 and called on its supporters to conduct attacks with knives and vehicles, everyday weapons that its supporters have used many times in the West over the past several years. The footage also showed New York City and Washington, D.C., as targets.

ISIS has regularly called for attacks on U.S. soil, and several who associated with its cause have acted upon the call. In June 2016, Omar Mateen launched a shooting attack on a LGBT nightclub in Orlando, Florida, killing 49 people. In December 2015, a couple killed 14 people in a shooting attack in San Bernardino, California. ISIS claimed responsibility for both attacks.

Las Vegas is a globally popular tourist spot, filled with entertainment and casinos. Its numerous attractions are the antithesis of ISIS's anti-Western beliefs.

Re: Las Vegas Shooting: 50 Killed and 406 Hurt Near Mandalay Bay

I am a bit suspicious about the following though:

    1. The killer and his girlfriend Marilou Danley both visited Dubai in the last couple of years. Danley has family there, although there are no details about the family.
    2. Danley also has family in the Philippines, possibly in the Marawi area.
    3. The killer sent $100,000 to the Philippines a couple days before the attack. It is unclear who this was sent to or why.
    4. The level of sophistication in the attack suggest formal military training of some kind (modified weapons, tripods, advanced scopes, range calculations on a sheet of paper, etc.), even though Paddock was never in the army, and his brother said that he was never "into guns". Did Paddock receive training overseas in the years before the attack?

to me, all of this is very suspicious, and suggests that there is more to this story

This is no different from the orlando shooting, yet he is not called a terrorist. If it was a self-proclaimed ISIS member, he'd be called a terrorist, or if he was a muslim, a terrorist.

But here, no word of a terrorist. Hypocrisy much.

But no, they refuse to see this as a terror incident and are reluctant about it, but when a Muslim or an ISIS member does this - everyone jumps on the "Terrorist" vagabond.

    More on Marilou Danley:

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/paddock-a...230002037.html

    U.S.
Paddock's Girlfriend Used Two Social Security Numbers and Was Married to Two Men at the Same Time
Newsweek Melina Delkic,Newsweek 18 hours ago
Marilou Danley, the live-in girlfriend of Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock, and now a "person of interest" in the shooting investigation, is a Philippines native who has used two Social Security numbers during her two-plus decades in the United States, and was married to two men at the same time, public records show.

The person who may hold the key to solving the mystery of why the Vegas gunman killed 59 and wounded nearly 600 people led a convoluted life of her own, with two simultaneous husbands, a bankruptcy, two Social Security numbers, multiple addresses in several states and even different ages depending on which state records you review.

The details are part of a Newsweek investigation into Danley's past, which takes on a new urgency now that the FBI is frantically working to bring her "immediately" back from overseas for more information about the shooting and the $100,000 Paddock wired to her family there days before the shooting.

The records show conflicting details under multiple identities:

Marilou came to the U.S. as Marilou Natividad, married Geary Danley in 1990 and took his surname. Danley, 76, lives in Arkansas, but he has declined to answer questions.

In 1996, Marilou wed Jose Bustos, and became Marilou Bustos. But she did not dissolve her marriage to Danley until 2015, divorce records show.

Both marriage licenses were filed in Clark County, which includes the city of Las Vegas, even though the Danleys lived in Tennessee and Arkansas around the time of their marriage, and the Bustoses lived in California. Marilou also has a daughter, currently living in California, but it is unclear whether one of her husbands, or another man, fathered the child.

In California, her name is registered as Marilou Natividad-Bustos and her birthday is listed as January 1962, making her 55 years old. Under a different Social Security number in Nevada, her name is Marilou Lou Danley and her birthday is listed as December 1954, making her 62.

At times, her identities merged: Marilou filed for bankruptcy in 2012, under the name Bustos, while she was still married to Danley and living with Paddock in Reno. Her lawyer during the bankruptcy has not yet responded to a request for comment. Marilou travels back to California often to visit her daughter there, Reno neighbors told Newsweek.

Marilou held multiple addresses, some simultaneously—in Arkansas, Tennessee, California, Florida and other states, and often moved through cities within those states.

Though the police initially cleared Marilou of any involvement in Sunday night's shooting, on Tuesday, Sheriff Joe Lombardo called her a "person of interest" in the investigation again at a briefing in Las Vegas.

It is rare for an individual to have multiple Social Security numbers, though it is legal to get a new one issued if the first one has "been misused" in a way that caused hardship, a 2014 report from the Social Security Administration said. There have been a few instances in which new immigrants to the U.S. end up with two Social Security numbers: once when they entered the country and once when they applied through an SSA office.

Newsweek has reached out to Marilou’s ex-husbands, family, and neighbors at her various residences. Two neighbors in Reno, who knew her under the name "Danley" while she lived with Paddock, on Monday called her and Paddock recluses who often left their home for extended periods of time.

A federal immigration spokesperson declined to comment, citing Marilou's "privacy rights." An FBI spokesperson referred questions to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, which did not respond to a request for comment. The Social Security Administration did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Re: Las Vegas Shooting: 50 Killed and 406 Hurt Near Mandalay Bay

Paddock had residences in Florida, Texas, California, and Nevada.

All of these states were hit by ISIS attacks (if you include this one) involving submachine guns, since 2015.

He met Danley sometime in late 2013.

Even before meeting Paddock, Danley was moving around the country using multiple names and SS numbers.

My theory is that there was to be multiple shooters using the two broken windows. That Paddock set it all up, and was going to get help carrying out the killings, just as there were two shooters in San Bernadino and Garland Texas.

The week before the attack, Paddock rented out TWO condos in a building overlooking another music festival.

Two people who appeared "Hispanic" threatened the concert attendees 45 minutes before the shootings. They may not have been Hispanic at all--they may have been from the Philippines (it was dark). Were these to be the shooters? Did something happen with the operation that cause Paddock to take matters into his own hands? Maybe the would-be shooters were denied entrance to the hotel?

Police were looking for two cars at the casino that were owned by Paddock. Who was driving the second one?

You shouldn´t believe lies of daesh - they have last times claimed many similar attacks being inspired by their ideology, with no evidencies. Daesh is in panic state - they afraid their supporters leave them and they try everything they ever can to stay on the top of headlines. Including kind of lies.

He is not called terrorist because this has nothing to do with terrorism, bro. It's all about American culture ;-) Same as the kids who go run amok. It's culture not terrorism, just see all the weapon - it's all culture.

Re: Las Vegas Shooting: 50 Killed and 406 Hurt Near Mandalay Bay

    Its not terrorism..

Although it may fit some description of terrorism, the word has been appropriated to remain relevant..and so it no longer applies.

    :|

The problem is real though, a lot of people are empowered by the dissociation..

But most of us will remain unaffected outside of the internet i would hope.

I recently got banned on a board where expletives are scattered through every sentence.. even the mods used expletives in the banned notice..

You cant get angry at such a world..

But you should do well in it..

Its not terrorism, dont dwell on it..

It wont ever be terrorism again. It will never apply to anything other than muslim perpetrators..

Infact it wont ever be used as a term for actions against muslims either.
    ..
    ...
What can you do about it?

There are places where people eat each other alive, regardless of race or religion..

But only if you let them.

..what makes any of you think the world is getting worse?

    https://youtu.be/zMF3OF7NbNk

    ..graphic pictures.

But where i found it, she couldnt have recieved a warmer welcome even if she shouted ...kill em all.

...but shes still banned from entering miss world soooo..

Make of it what you will.

I feel sorry for the people that died.. among them were those well prepared to defend themselves..

But when it happens there is rarely a thing you can do about it in most instances.

    Hard to make sense of.

    Edit..

    You actually wont do well..

The americans are miles above us in terms of saying what they want to say without saying it..

You could set fire to a mosque and they would just talk about the amount of tax dollars spent on safeguarding trump towers being extortionate.

Guess they really love them towers.

But no, they refuse to see this as a terror incident and are reluctant about it, but when a Muslim or an ISIS member does this - everyone jumps on the "Terrorist" vagabond.

If he had shouted out or left a video or left a note that he was doing it for a political reason then it WOULD be called terrorism.

He didn't so its not terrorism

terrorism - the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes.
    http://www.dictionary.com/browse/terrorism

This was not terrorism. It was not intended to intimidate or coerce, and it was not for political purposes.

As an American in a similar situation to the shooter, I think I understand him perfectly. America was a great country when we were young. It has degenerated into a disgusting cesspool. This naturally produces hatred for the American people, not only because of how horrible they are now, but also because they are a betrayal of the America that was. So I can easily understand the shooter's motivations - disgust and hatred.

Do it.
If I did, would it give you a smug sense of satisfaction?

Breaking News – Police Arrest Mandalay Security Guard Jesus Compos As Second Shooter In Las Vegas Massacre

By David Foster Last updated Oct 12, 2017

    Share
(CNN) Breaking News – Mandalay Bay security guard Jesus Compos has been arrested accused of being an accomplice and second shooter in the Las Vegas massacre that claimed the lives of 59 people and injured more than 500.

Jesus Campos had originally been praised for his apparent heroics on October 1st, as he supposedly rushed to Paddock’s suite, was shot in the upper thigh through the door, and continued to help get people to safety despite his wounds. However, FBI officials involved in the investigation now believe he was an accomplice of Paddock’s, and was involved in the initial shooting as a second gunman from the other broken window in Paddock’s 32nd-floor room.

According to a senior FBI official, authorities became suspicions by the extreme amount of gunpowder residue found on Campos’ hands and inconsistencies in his timeline of events. “We believe he killed Paddock, shot holes through the door and his own arm to produce physical evidence for his cover story, then went and lay next to the elevator,” the FBI official told CNN.

An anonymous source working on the investigation told CNN that authorities are now in possession of security footage showing Campos smuggling the firearms used in the massacre in through a Mandalay Bay loading dock in the days leading up to the event.

With the arrest of Compos Police now hope to get a greater understanding of the motivations behind the attack.

I heard he converted to Muslim, and also heard that Islamic state was involved. But that was only mentioned once. It was the second day from the attack that it was said. It was never mentioned again. The whole story is odd.
