US: Minnesota - Second Night of Clashes Over Death In Custody

    Death By Democracy

"... Police and protesters have clashed for a second night in the US city of Minneapolis after an unarmed black man died in police custody.

Tear gas was fired by police, while protesters threw rocks and sprayed graffiti. Businesses were also looted.

George Floyd, 46, died on Monday and video showed him gasping for breath as a white policeman knelt on his neck.

Four police officers have been fired, with the mayor saying that being black "should not be a death sentence".

    [...]

There was also looting and vandalism, with some buildings close to the demonstrations being destroyed by fire.

The incident echoes the case of Eric Garner, who was placed in a police chokehold in New York in 2014. His death became a rallying call against police brutality and was a driving force in the Black Lives Matter movement.

    [...]

On a second night of demonstrations on Wednesday, protesters pelted rocks and some threw tear-gas canisters back at the officers.
The crowd grew into the thousands as the evening went on, and there was a standoff outside the police station where officers formed a human barricade to prevent protesters gaining entry.

A nearby supermarket was vandalised, and people were seen fleeing the store with baskets of looted goods. Other businesses were seen in flames and some appeared to have been entirely destroyed.

"Tonight was a different night of protesting than it was just the night before," a police spokesman told the New York Times.

Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey has requested the state national guard's assistance in the wake of the protests, KARE11 News reported.

He earlier said: "We can have peaceful demonstrations, but I also have to ensure the safety of everyone in the city." ..."

Minneapolis descends into chaos after police killing of black man (VIDEOS)

Gangs of looters have cleared out a number of shops in Minneapolis as hectic protests over a police killing of an unarmed black man escalate into riots, with violent clashes erupting between demonstrators and law enforcement.

The city descended into looting and vandalism on Wednesday following a large protest the day prior over the police killing of George Floyd, with videos shared to social media showing rioters breaking into a Target store, smashing windows and grabbing up merchandise....

A heated protest continued outside the Minnesota Police Department’s 3rd precinct headquarters, where demonstrators were seen breaking windows.

    Protests Come To White House

"A rally against police brutality near the White House in Washington DC has escalated into clashes between officers and protesters, who at one point broke police lines. Fighting back, law enforcement reportedly used tear gas.

The DC protests over the death of George Floyd moved closer to the White House overnight, with multiple demonstrators engaging in a brawl with officers equipped with full riot gear. The police line was completely broken when protesters tried to snatch riot shields, eventually pulling one officer into the crowd..."

"Video footage captured destruction in the downtown area as protesters set fires, smashed windows, and spray-painted anarchist symbols and anti-police slogans on buildings.

The rioters broke into the Multnomah County Justice Center, which is home to the police headquarters and the county jail, and set a small fire before being chased off by cops....

Re: US: Minnesota - Second Night of Clashes Over Death In Custody

    Minnesota
remains the most volatile region, with curfews ordered for the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-Saint Paul from 20:00 to 06:00 on Friday and Saturday evening.

Protesters defied the curfew on Friday. Fires, many from burning cars, were visible in a number of areas with fire officials unable to reach some sites.

Television pictures also showed looting in Minneapolis, with police officers thin on the ground.

Only at about midnight (05:00 GMT) did police and National Guard troops move in in any numbers, the Star Tribune reports.

State Governor Tim Walz, in an early morning press briefing, described the situation as "chaotic, dangerous and unprecedented".

He said he took responsibility for "underestimating the wanton destruction and the sheer size of this crowd" when questioned about the lack of police on the streets.

He said the Guard deployment was the largest in state history but admitted "there's simply more of them than us". He said those on the streets "don't give one damn" about the stay-at-home order.

The Pentagon has put the military on alert for possible deployment in Minneapolis.

On Friday evening, crowds gathered near the White House in Washington waving photographs of Mr Floyd and chanting "I can't breathe" - invoking his last words and those of Eric Garner, a black man who died after being held in a police chokehold in New York in 2014.

The White House was then temporarily placed on lockdown, with the US Secret Service closing entrances and exits.

In Atlanta, a state of emergency was declared for some areas to protect people and property. Buildings were vandalised and a police vehicle was set alight as protesters gathered near the offices of news broadcaster CNN.

    [...]

In New York's Brooklyn district, protesters clashed with police, throwing projectiles, starting fires and destroying police vehicles. A number of officers were injured and many arrests made.

Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted: "We don't ever want to see another night like this."

In Detroit, police are investigating after a 19-year-old man was killed when a vehicle pulled up to protesters and shots were fired into the crowd.

In Dallas, officers launched tear gas canisters after they were pelted with stones, with tear gas also fired in Phoenix.

Police in Portland, Oregon, declared a riot, with reports of looting and a number of fires.

Protesters blocked roads in Los Angeles and also in Oakland, where windows were smashed and "Kill Cops" graffiti sprayed.

    Cop Dies From Injuries

One Federal Protective Service officer has succumbed to his injuries after he and his colleague were shot on Friday night in Oakland, which is currently engulfed in violent protests, police told media.

    [...]

Minneapolis, New York, Atlanta, Portland and other cities have seen violent protests in recent days, with rioters clashing with security forces and setting police vehicles on fire.

Tensions were also high in Oakland, where at least 7,500 demonstrators took to the streets, destroying property and clashing with security services....

    Minnesota Fully Mobilises National Guard

    Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
    - The governor of Minnesota, where protests have erupted over police brutality and the death of George Floyd during the last week, has fully mobilised the National Guard to Minneapolis for the first time in state history.

Governor Tim Walz said the deployment comes as part of an effort to help quell the protests, which have often started off peaceful before descending into chaos, with fires and looting - violence he largely blamed on outsiders.

"We do not have the numbers," Walz said. "We cannot arrest people when we are trying to hold ground."

Minnesota National Guard General Jon Jensen said all the state's guardsmen had been activated, and some 2,500 members were expected to be mobilised by midday. "It means we're all in," Jensen said.

It is the "largest domestic deployment in the Minnesota's National Guard's 164-year history," the National Guard said on Twitter.

The deployment comes more than four days after the killing of George Floyd, which has set off angry protests across the United States against police brutality and the treatment of African Americans. Friday saw demonstrations and marches, sometimes violent, in Minneapolis, Louisville, Kentucky, Atlanta, Georgia, Houston, Texas, Washington, DC, and elsewhere.

Floyd died on Monday after Derek Chauvin, a white officer, pinned the Black man's neck down to the ground with his knee for nearly nine
    minutes.

A bystander video of the incident shows Floyd pleading for help, repeatedly saying: "I can't breathe."

Floyd eventually goes motionless, and Chauvin continues to kneel on Floyd's neck for nearly three minutes despite appeals by bystanders to get off of him, according to court documents.

    Democratic Terrorism

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has hit out at Bill de Blasio, branding as “unacceptable” the New York City mayor’s handling of an incident in which two police cars drove through a crowd of protesters in Brooklyn.

The New York congresswoman spoke out after de Blasio defended the New York Police Department (NYPD) officers involved.

Video footage shows dozens of protesters gathering in front of a police car in the road and throwing objects at it. Another police car pulls up and ploughs through the crowd. The other car lurches forward, pushing people to the floor.

@NYCMayor your comments tonight were unacceptable,” the influential Democrat tweeted to her 7m followers. “As mayor, this police department is under your leadership. This moment demands leadership & accountability from each of us. Defending and making excuses for NYPD running SUVs into crowds was wrong. Make it right. De-escalate.”

    Under Siege

US President Donald Trump made an on-foot visit to the vandalized St. John’s church in the nation’s capital, leaving the White House surrounded by a crowd of Secret Service agents as unrest over police brutality grips the city.

After a brief statement from the White House on Monday evening calling again for an end to the protests and rioting that’s erupted across dozens of American cities, Trump took a stroll to the St. John’s Church near the White House for a surprise photo-op.

“We have the greatest country in the world. Going to keep it nice and safe,” the president said while posing in front of the church, which on Sunday night was vandalized and damaged by fire amid turmoil sparked by the police killing of a Minneapolis man last week.

Some 1,700 National Guard troops have been deployed to the city as the unrest rages on, with reports that additional active-duty soldiers and military police could be sent into the capital. In his White House statement, the president vowed to dispatch “thousands and thousands of heavily armed soldiers” and
police if the rioting didn’t end – not only to the capital but any of the dozens of cities where similar turmoil has broken out.

After a few minutes outside the church, Trump returned to the White House, flanked by a massive crowd of police and troops, who cleared out nearby Lafayette Park so he could reach the church unimpeded.

    Eye For An Eye?

"...A car has plowed through a crowd of police in upstate New York, leaving two officers with serious injuries. The moment of the attempted ramming was caught in harrowing footage shared online.

As heated and sometimes violent protesters made their way through New York City on Monday night, similar demonstrations also broke out upstate in Buffalo. But as police cleared protesters from an intersection around the city’s E District police station, a SUV was filmed as it rammed through the group of officers, who quickly scattered, and sped away down the road..."

Re: US: Minnesota - Second Night of Clashes Over Death In Custody

‘Looting is the price of freedom!’ Washington has conveniently forgotten its cynical advice to post-invasion Iraq

As the United States finds itself overwhelmed with protests and riots raging across the nation, its unsolicited past advice in places like Hong Kong and Iraq under similar circumstances is coming home to roost, with a vengeance.

Just yesterday Washington DC was the cock of the walk, sufficiently drunk on power to scold foreign governments for the way they were manhandling protesters at home. In one particularly audacious moment, it even dispatched officials to the Ukrainian capital of Kiev in a display of solidarity with protesters then rallying against the government, which eventually fell.

Today, history has been flipped on its head as the US finds itself attempting to restore law and order following the videotaped killing of a black man at the hands of a white police officer. As this tinderbox moment threatens to blow, Washington would like nothing more than for foreign governments around the world to just shut up and mind their own business. Of course, that is unlikely to happen, since not even nationwide riots have curbed America’s appetite for lecturing others.

    [...]

Perhaps the most condescending advice that Washington has ever given to a foreign state, however, came in April 2003 from then Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld as Baghdad was suffering lawlessness and looting following the illicit US invasion of Iraq.

“While no one condones looting…one can understand the pent-up feelings that may result from decades of repression and people who have had members of their family killed by that regime,” Rumsfeld remarked, with off-the-chart arrogance. “And I don't think there’s anyone … (who wouldn’t) accept it as part of the price of getting from a repressed regime to freedom.”

Rumsfeld’s shockingly cynical comment, which revealed to what extent Washington would go to control the political situation in a foreign land, resonates with significance today. Would Rumsfeld and others so blithely suggest, as he did in Iraq, that the looters running wild on the streets of America today are justified in their behavior because they have had “members of their family killed by that regime,” and that this is just “part of the price” of achieving freedom? It seems altogether unlikely.
