A paid police informant who calls himself "an observant Muslim" infiltrated a group of men and youths arrested last month and charged with plotting to carry out bomb attacks and kidnappings around southern Ontario, CBC News has learned.
The informant, who spoke exclusively to Linden McIntyre of CBC's The Fifth Estate, is 29-year-old Mubin Shaikh, a prominent member of Toronto's Indo-Canadian Muslim community. He was born in Canada to immigrant parents.
Press reports say Shaikh will testify at the trials of the 12 men and five youths who have been charged in the case. They were arrested in early June.
Bail hearings for the accused have been taking place in a court in Brampton, Ont., just west of Toronto. Police say members of the group bought large quantities of fertilizer to make explosives and planned a series of attacks in Ontario because they were angry about the plight of Muslims in other countries.
Shaikh told CBC News that he had worked undercover for the Canadian Security and Intelligence Service and the police for more than two years, much of that time with the suspects in the alleged bomb plots.
A former army cadet and Canadian Armed Forces reservist, Shaikh says he directed a winter training program on guerrilla tactics near Washago, Ont., at the behest of the police.
Shaikh describes the suspects as "fruitcakes...with the capacity to do some real damage."
He said what he heard about the plans by the group was similar to what police and prosecutors have alleged, that there were plans to kidnap prominent Canadians and bomb such targets as the Toronto Stock Exchange and the CBC building in Toronto.
He said he was moved to become an informer by concerns about the impact of the plot on all Canadians and particularly on the country's Muslim community.
"My interests were about Islam and Muslims, even and above Canada," he said.
Shaikh said he consulted the Qur'an and senior Muslim religious leaders before going undercover and becoming an informer.
"God says in the Qur'an that we must value one life," he said, "I was guided, I had my licence."
Shaikh has declined formal protection as a court witness after consulting a lawyer, saying he was working for the safety of Canadians and Muslims, not for the police.
Defence lawyers for the 17 accused say the government's case has many flaws and questions are already being raised about the role of informers.
"It's going to depend on the disclosure and what role the operative played," defence lawyer and legal activist Paul Copeland told the Toronto Star.
Who says that the media never prints good stories about muslims?
Re: Devout Muslim informer helped in Toronto terrorism-related arrests
hey at least now the canadian people wont hate muslims so much. can you imagine if the bombings did occur, there would be a lot of people that would hate us. besides what do these bombings do anyway. the dont help the ummah one bit. they only make us look bad in the eyes of the world. were supposed to be an example to the world. but if you are going to fight do not harm civilians! dont think im a pacifist. by all means fight those who oppress you but do not do suicide bombings or civilian mass murder etc. the prophet PBUH told us not to hurt the innocent.

Re: Devout Muslim informer helped in Toronto terrorism-related arrests
I find it to be an interesting angle that he chose to work undercover in this case, not so much to help the police, but to defend the muslim community from these guys tarnishing the image of the community.
He consulted the Quran and senior Muslim religious leaders, and came to the conclusion that he must work against these bomb plotters.
God says in the Qur'an that we must value one life.

I disagree with the way he did it, he should have first informed these people that it's haraam and they should stop and give them a chance to repent then if they don't listen then he should have informed the authoritys.

And what if they simply agreed with him, ignored him and went on with their bomb plots without him?

Why ponder what would've happened only allah knows. In islam you can't just watch someone commiting haraam and then condem him when you didn't try and get him on the straight path.

Remember this?
Oh please go and follow the yellow brick road and go to 'wonderland' while your there say hi to the tin-man for me, note the sarcasam! people who think this will work are really deluded and hyprocritical.
This would never work and you know it. We are not in wonderland where you can just tell people what they are doing wrong and they listen. If he had done that he would never have gotten close enough to learn the details in the first place. The end result is that they would have shunned him. The police would have had no evidence to go on, and these loonies would still be free.
We all know that anyone as twisted in the brain as someone willing to kill others for being kafirs, is never going to listen to any kind of wonderland speech as this. In this case he would have been the tin-man.

These guys were not the smartest people. They handed out videos claiming muslims did the attacks in american (911) :grumbling. Many imams talked with these guys but they said anyone who disagrees with them are cowards and not muslim. Besides i think not all 17 are guilty some just were friends. Media only talks about the 3 guys they never mention the rest. But some how the rest are being called guilty.

When my children got out of line, I told them to stop. When a man threatened my life I went to the police. You don’t treat people who what to kill like little children.
