In this time we’re living airports, highways and trains are busy 24/7 and the average person does spend much time, money and strenght of his life on journeys. But if you act upon the Islamic etiquettes of travelling you’ll not only be a hard nut for Shaytan, but as well can make your next journey a source of great blessings and reward through revivaling so many Sunnats. I know that there are many more Masnoon Du’as, but I think it suffices to first practice upon these basic things.

1.As far as possible at least 2 persons should travel together. A single person shouldn’t travel alone, but if it’s necessary or he’s forced to by certain circumstances, then there’s no harm.

-Fath al-Bari, 6/35

2. While you step with your right foot first inside/on the means of transportation, say“Bismillah”.

-Tirmidhi

3. After having mounted the means of transport well, say 3 times “Allahu Akbar”and then recite the following Du’a:

“SubhanAll-ladhi, sakh-khara lana, haatha, wa-ma kunna lahu mukrineen. Wa inna ila Rubbina lamunqalibuun.”

Glory be to Him who has subjected these to our )use(, for we could never have accomplished this )by ourselves(. And to our Lord, surely must we return.

[Tirmidhi & Muslim

4.Then recite the following Du’a:

“Allahumma inna as’aluka fi safarina hadhal-birra wat-taqwah, wa minal ‘amali ma tardha. Allahumma hawwin ‘alaiyna safarana hadha waTwi ‘anna bu’dahu. Allahumma antas- Saahibu fis-safari, wal-khalifatu fil-ahli. Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min wa’tha’is-safar, wa ka’abtil-mandhari, wa soo’il- munqalabi fil-ahli wa-maali, wal-walad.”

O Allah! I ask You on this our journey for goodness and piety, and for deeds that are acceptable to You. O Allah! Lighten this journey for us and make its distance easy )short( for us. O Allah! You are our Companion on the road and The Guardian-Protector of the household. O Allah! I seek refuge in You from this journey’s hardships, and from the disagreeable sights in store and from finding my family and property and children in misfortune upon returning.[

5. If it becomes necessary during the journey to stop or rest, then it is Sunnah to free the way and then stop. Resting on the way stops others from using it and causes them distress.

-Muslim 2/144

6. When one or the conveyance is ascending during the journey one should say“Allahu Akbar”.

-Bukhari 420

7. When one or the conveyance is descending during the journey one should say“Subhan’Allah”.

-Bukhari

8. When you start entering the city or town of your destination, then recite 3 times the following Du’a:

“Allahumma barik lana fiha.”

Oh Allah! Bestow your blessings upon us in this town.

-Hisn-e-Haseen

9. Then recite this Du’a:

“Allahummar-suqna janahaa, wa habibnaa ila ahlihaa, wa habib salihee ahlihaa ilayna.”

10. Rasulullah )Sallallahu Ta’ala Alayhi Wasallam( said, that if the need of the journey or travel has been fulfilled one should head towards one’s home, it’s not good to keep travelling without any further need.

-Bukhari 421

10. If you reach your home after several days of travelling and after most of the night has passed already, then don’t enter your house. Instead it’s better to enter the house in the morning.

-Mishkat 339

If the people of your house know that you’re coming that late and are awaiting you, then there’s nothing wrong with entering the house.

-Mirkat 5/338

12. It has been fordidden to travel with a dog.

-Muslim 1/202

Because of them Shaytan will follow you and the Barkat of the journey will disappear.

13. For the traveller on his way back home it’s Masnoon, that before he enters his house he performs 2 Raka’at in the Masjid.

-Mishkat

14. When you return from the journey then recite the following:

“Aa’ibuna, ta’ibuna, ‘aabiduna, li Rabbina haamiduna.”

We return repentant to our Lord, worshipping our Lord, and praising our Lord.

-Tirmidhi & Muslim
